  1. Can you send me a picture to be sure it's the same thing? Any interest in selling one and shipping it to Pittsburgh?
  2. I'm trying to track down a vehicle option that I've only ever seen once before. My brother wants one for his OBW, but I can't seem to find any record of them even existing. In my 1997 legacy outback limited there was a hard plastic cargo organizer/tray. It was about 8-9 inches deep and had removable dividers. It filled/covered the entire floor of the hatch area. This was in addition to the rubber/plastic giant floor mat at everyone has in their outback. This bin/organizer/tray/whatever sat on top of the normal mat. It was stamped with SUBARU. It came from the dealer. It was awesome. I have never seen another like it and I can find no mention of it in any searches. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? it just occurred to me that I've been referring to this thing in the past-tense. I still have it. It is has been made to fit my forester. If it will help, I can brave the frigid cold and try to clear all of the junk out of it and get a picture.
  3. I'd love an update on this thread.
  4. Hopefully you don't torch your rotor with the pads dragging.
  5. If you have a pair of vise grips, you can get the caliper lose from the disc and then clamp off the brake line before the caliper. I've done that a number of times when a brake line blows out. You'll only be running on 3 brakes and you'll have to replace a brake line, but if you have a long drive home, it's a pretty good fix. There might be an easier solution, but this one will definitely work.
  6. i can't offer much help here, but that sounds like a SWEET project! Good luck and keep us updated
  7. I found this on Reddit today: http://imgur.com/r/Shitty_Car_Mods/UaBH3gR
  8. I don't know what almost anything in this thread means However, I'd like to get into some minor fabrications, and I would LOVE to hear some elaboration in more layman's terms about what is wrong with this set up. To my ignorant eyes, it looks pretty good.
  9. That sounds like an awesome drive. I love how quiet it is driving in fresh snow, and it's nice knowing that your car can get you where you need to go.
  10. Jealous! That's some pretty sweet power. Every single day I wish that my Forester was a turbo
  11. It is strange to me that I have lived my whole life in places that get snow and I have never experienced this before. Either way, I've got the answer I needed. Thank you people of USMB.
  12. Really cold? Check. Fine, powdery snow? Check. Cabin Air filter? Nope. There is a spot for it, but there is not one installed. So is that it? Just let the heater core warm up? I usually warm the car up before driving in the winter, but this morning I was in a hurry. Maybe that's why this is the first time it has happened. Thanks Fairtax
  13. 2004 Forester 117,000 miles I got in my car this morning and headed for work. It was around 10 degrees F. I turned the defroster on and cranked the fan all the way up. Soon the snow that I was too lazy to remove from my hood was flying up over my windshield like normal. It was all normal until a light snow started coating my dash, the inside of my windshield, and my face! I've never had this happen. What gives??? PS: If there is more than about an inch of snow on the car I brush it off so that I don't blind other drivers. The little bit that was on the car was gone before the end of the driveway.
  14. For what it's worth, I've got a pile of brat parts a mere 4 hours away and a brother that drives through Cincinnati pretty often. If you discover that you need anything, let me know.
  15. Look up VDC. Subaru uses this system in the more modern cars. However, without knowing more details, I'd bet your issues have more to do with tires than anything else.
  16. I do track the mileage using the odometer. That's how I know that the mileage is so inconsistent. I'm thinking that I should investigate my filler neck. I've got a hypothesis that mileage isn't actually inconsistent, but that the amount of gas put into the tank is inconsistent and screwing up the calculation. Without a reasonably good seal when filling the tank, the pump doesn't know when to shut off. I think I have vapors escaping when I fill up so the pumps shut off at different times from one fill-up to the next.
  17. THE CAR: 2004 Forester XS 5 speed manual 117k miles THE FACTS: I always fill my tank when I am between E and 1/4 tank. I drive basically the same route every day at the same speeds, etc. (Mostly two lane back roads at about 60mph with few stops) Sometimes I get 18 MPG, sometimes I'm pushing 30 MPG. When I fill up, I fill up all the way. Sometimes it takes 8 gallons, sometimes over 11 gallons despite filling up when the gauge is at the same place every time. I may have a rust hole in the filler neck of my gas tank. I'm not sure. It would explain my check engine light that is on for an evap leak (same thing as loose gas cap). However, no gas seems to leak out when I fill up. THE QUESTIONS: Is my mileage really fluctuating that much? If so, why? Is my fuel gauge reading inconsistently and therefore making me think that I'm filling up at the same time when I actually am not? Is the pump shutting off at different times because of a rust hole in my filler neck? My gas gauge often reads Full for as much as 70 miles, so I could be less than full, but the gauge is showing full. COMMENTS: It just occurred to me to start filling up at the same odometer reading instead of the same fuel gauge reading for a little while. Maybe if the fuel economy appears consistent, I can rule some things out. Anyone ever have a similar issue? General thoughts and opinions?
  18. That is basically the route I was planning to go. I'm going to take my struts out and make templates, then cut the plastic with a bandsaw. Then I'll knock the bolts out of my strut tops and replace them with bolts 1 inch longer. I was hoping I could get a pattern and make the spacers before I took the car apart so that I could minimize downtime for the vehicle. If I had some old strut tops laying around that would be perfect, but I think I'm going to have to do it the hard way.
  19. I skimmed through that thread hoping to find some scaled drawings, but I missed where your link was posted. I just went back and found it. That's pretty good stuff. Thanks.
  20. I hear what you guys are saying and I don't disagree. However, I'm trying to get a feel for around how many miles the original head gaskets seem to be going out in these cars. Anyone else have some input? I know a lot of guys have had the HG's go out, so how many miles did the car have the problem showed up?
  21. I'm no subie noobie and I've done my time with bad head gaskets, but I was wondering if I could get some opinions on the matter. I did a search and I didn't really find what I was looking for. I'm shopping for a 2000-2004 legacy for my wife. I know HG's are a concern. Most of the cars I'm looking at have 100,000+ miles. I know there are no guarantees and HG's can leak internally or externally at any mileage, but what would you figure is a reasonably safe mileage? What I'm looking for is "if it hasn't leaked by xxx,xxx miles, it probably won't." Side notes are welcome with your opinion, but please don't jack the thread.
