:lol: The TDIs and CDIs and TDCIs and so on are far away from bombproof. 70% of the cars sold in austria came with diesel enginesSo I know what I am talking about. The CDI (nearly every Taxi here is an E-Class CDI) has big problems with the diesel injectors and the high pressure common rail pumps. Repairs are very expensive, a firend of mine had to change the hole common-rail-system of his 2002 E270 CDI. It cost him 7000 Euro (!!!), Mercedes-Benz said they will pay 50%, so he had to pay 3500 Euro. And he had 120.000km on the clock. These problems are not so uncommon! The TDI engines have big problems with their timing belts, turbo chargers and cylinder heads, especially the 2,5 TDI in the VW Passat, Audi A4 and A6 from 1998 untill 2004. The new 2,7 and 3,0 TDI are more reliable. For now... Overall you can say that the petrol powerded cars last longer than the cars with modern high pressure diesel engines. The old diesel in the Mercedes-Benz W123, W124 and so on are extremely reliable, a few of them got nearly 1.000.000 km on the clock, mostly Taxis. But the new CDI-Taxis don´t last longer than 300.000 km average. Of course there are some with a higher mileage, but only a few. Yes, there are very much diesel powered japanese cars. They are more reliable than the german ones, but the japanese petrol engine cars are also lasting longer than the modern diesel powered. The best modern diesels when it comes to reliability, smoothness and comfort are the HDI from Peugeot and Citroen. At the millenium, there was a big diesel boom in europe. Nearly 80% of the new cars where diesel powered. But now the situation is changing. Diesel is more expensive now (90 cent for 1 litre diesel, 1 Euro for 1 litre petrol), the diesel smoke (very fine dust) in citys is making our children ill and the cars are not that reliable. Of course a modern diesel is fun to drive, but they are louder, rougher, they smell poor, they smoke and the diesel is not that cheap anymore. So most of the new car buyers are thinking of a potrol engine these days. And now subaru comes with diesel. We needed the Subaru diesel 10 years ago, now SOA (Subaru of Austria ) says its to late. The diesel boom in europe is over. Lukas

Good work, I hope you show us a lot of pics, Connie! -
My father owns a new Legacy... ... oh, no, its an Outback! My fahters bought a new Outback 2.5i with 165 hp in 2005 and his fuel consumption is nearly the same. His Outback 2.5i (EJ25) with manual transmission and dual range needs 9 litres/100 km. But its a lot faster than my 1.5R and of course its also a lot heavier. But the reason why my 1.5R needs nearly the same amount of fuel than dads 2.5i it clear to me: The drive the 1.5R as fast on our country roads as the Outback, you have to push the 1.5R a lot harder. Nearly every time I want to accelerate, for example from 30 mph to 60 mph, I floor my 1.5R in third gear. Thats not necessary if you drive the Outback. Lukas

OK guys, I got my 1.5R 3 weeks ago and I have done 1000 miles so far. We changed the oil the first time yesterday and now I am driving my 1.5R completely normal, no special treatment for breaking in anymore. What can I say? I am very happy with it, but there are a few things that I don´t like. At first, its fuel consumption is bad. I need 8,8 litres gas on 100km. But I am not driving on highways, I am driving on typical curvy and hilly austria country roads with a lot of accelerating and braking and a lot of hilly to climb. My dealer said the fuel consumption is getting better with more miles on it, but I don´t really think so. And on second hand I don´t like its sound. It sounds really "metallic", like setright said before. Especially over 4000rpm. But you are there very often, because it only accelerates good between 4000 and 7000rpm. Lukas

I dont think that fiberglass is a good choice. Of course its relatively easy to work with, but in case of an accident, its not safe. Your XT will not be stable anymore. Lukas

The new EL´s are also used in other markets like japan... The Impreza WRX/WRX STI and the Forester Turbo have the same 2.5 engine than yours in the US. Only the N/A versions are EL, they are called "Hochdrehzahl-Konzept" with means "high rev concept". The EL 1.5R redlines at 7000rpm, the 2.0R at 7500rpm. Maybe these brand new engines are not that useful for your driving in the US, but here in europe they are very much fun. Yes, the EL are nonturbo, the EJ25 is turboed. The Outback 2.5i is the only Subaru with EJ nonturbo engine now. All other nonturbos are EL. Lukas

I know its not broken in yet (500km), but I think it needs quite a lot of fuel. I was at the gas station today and I needed 8,66 litres/100km. Thats quite a lot for this little engine. I don´t rev it over 5000 because its not broken in yet. Subaru Austria says it needs 7,9 litres/100km when its broken in. We will see. Lukas, happy with his Impreza 1.5R

The 1.5R is the same engine as the 2.0R, available in the Impreza and Legacy. The 2.0R has 160hp and is called EL20. And YES, the 1.5R has DOHC and it even has a kind of VTEC. Sorry, I dont know how it is called in english, but Honda call it VTEC. It makes more torque at low rpm and better power at high rpm. And NO, the 1.5R and the 2.0R are not rebaged EJs, they are a completely new engine family. The 1.5R with 105hp is available in the Impreza and the 2.0R is available in the Impreza, Legacy and Forester. They both have DOHC, they both have this VTEC-thing and they both have the dual range. The 1.5r redlines at 7000, the 2.0R redlines at 7500 rpm. Only the Outback 2.5i had the EJ25 called 2.5 engine with 165 hp. Lukas

Oh I don´t think that its a "poor mans impreza". The Impreza 1.5R isnt a sports car with a little engine, its an economical station wagon with the famous "go anywhere" option. The impreza isnt usualy a sports car, its a compact go anywhere vehicle, available with turbo engines. But thats what people forget hen they think about the impreza. Many people think "impreza = sports car". But thats not true. The impreza is also available with sport options and sporty engines, but basically the impreza is a reliable compact 4 wheel drive vehicle. Nothing more, and nothing less. Its like the Leone/Loyale, but only nowadays. Think about that... Lukas

Hi Guys! The 1.5R isnt an EJ, its called EL15. Thats what one can read on the engine. I´ll take pics of the engine bay and the dual range lever today and show it to you here. it now has 89km on the clock, so I don´t have pushed it hard yet, I don´t idle it over 4000rpm because its not broken in. But what I can say by now, it has adequate power. Here in austria, the roads are quiet curvy and narrow, so you can´t drive really fast. As I said before, we also got the Impreza 1.6TS with 95 hp and it was an adequate ride. Of course the engine needs rpm, if you step on the gas at 2000rpm, it doesnt accelerate well. But if you keep it over 3000, it offers enough power to overtake by time and keep up with traffic. Its possible that its not enough powerful for your roads, but the roads around here are simply the same than the roads in Japan. Here are pics of the lever, the engine bay and my co-driver: If you are interested in more specific pics or if you have questions, feel free to ask. Lukas

My best wishes and I hope you have fun with your XT6. Looks like it hase a lot of rust. But I am sure you will take good care of this rare car. Merry Xmas, Connie! Lukas -
This mechanism was called "Auto 4WD" and the 3AT and the Push-Button 5MT Leone without Turbo had it from 1985 until 1989. The XT Turbo had it only until 1987, in 1987 came the 4EAT and 5MT AWD. L

The 4WD comes on when you turn on the wipers, when you brake and when you are accelerating hard. L
