  1. Are you afraid that someone will steal your gas? Have you ever tried to siphon a newer model gas tank? It ain't real easy... Now, the older tanks were a straight shot. Simple deal.
  2. Hi Todd, Yes, I forgot to mention that. The junkyard man even wrote "change pilot bushing" on the slip when I picked up the motor. The clutch kit came with one and was newly installed when the tech school did the tranny swap last fall, so the bearing didn't even have 100 miles on it.
  3. When we switched out the engine in my '78 Brat,we found that it had an automatic torque converter plate. It just unbolted to accept the flywheel for the manual transmission. We did find that the "y" pipe flanges didn't match up to the new engine. We took it to the custom exhaust shop and he cut away the heat shield and discovered a gigantic hole in the "y" pipe. He cut it all out and made up new flanges for $60. He knew exactly what he had to do before we told him, he said it was common on these cars. The dipstick is different too. The new motor didn't have one, so we thought we could just use my old one. It takes a shorter stick than my original, so we had to cut it down and make a new witness mark for full. He also changed the distributor to electronic. Everything else bolted up fine.
  4. Yikes! You changed the distinctive tourquoise blue to yellow??? That's just wrong in my book. Mine's red and yellow but I would never even consider changing the dome covers or air cleaner canister to any other color than the tourquoise. Other than that, way to go! Best of luck!
  5. Do yourselves a favor... get a carb from Roo-Builders... they are dirt cheap, and be done with the no idle, stalling, and other headaches. Car ran like crap... deemed the carb was toast by Mudrat on the phone and "The Mad Scientist", hands on in person, from the NASIOC (NESIOC). We installed a new Roo-Builders carb, plug n' play, (just had to adjust the float). I was surprised to find that my engine was junk once I actually got the proper fuel to it... quick compression test and found it... real fast! Changed out the engine with one with 49,000 on it. We nixed the points and added an electronic distributor... she runs like a champ! Fires right up and stays running until I decide to shut it off! Woohoo!
  6. Keep it! Restore it! It can't possibly need as much work as mine did! Since the motor transplant, I made the car show 2 weeks in a row! It was worth it in the end... the little kids were thrilled to be allowed to climb in the bed and sit in the jump seats while the other owners were telling them "Don't Touch!" One little boy came back 3 times!
  7. That's just the ticket for my '86! I would love to have stacks, but seats and a rollbar don't leave any room. Jerry, I set a PM for details on the side pipes. Looks sharp, I love the wheels! I got the chrome wagon wheels from boobaru and they look very nice on the '78. My favorite color is chrome!
  8. So who's in on this meet? Would a change of location draw more interest?
  9. I have an '05 Baja 5 sp. and now that the Brat's fixed and running great, it's my daily driver to work and back... $2.87 for premium is a bit much. The Brat runs on anything you feed it, plus it's a blast to drive... but so is the Baja ...
  10. Right now she's getting about 9 mpg and $75 to fill up. She lives on the top of "hill" (by PNW standards), smack in the middle of the "snow belt" of Massachusetts. She also has two small boys so AWD/4WD is a must. I agree that she'll be much better off with the Forester. They camp and canoe, she'll lose some room, but she also managed to do the same activities with an Acura Integra?!
  11. Hi Jibs, We brought the Brat to a custom exhaust shop. He cut away the heat shield to expose the Y pipe and discovered a huge hole on the Y pipe that was hidden behind the heat shield. He cut back further, remade the flanges welded them in and closed the system. Apparently, the backpressure changed things. The distributor and timing were the ultimate problems... he changed out the distributor, but during his frustration, he forgot about TDC. That night, while I was reading posts about timing issues, the term TDC came up and Bingo! it all came back to him, from then on he pretty much quoted the rest of the post on the procedure. He went back out with a clear head found he was 180 off, corrected it and it runs great now... doesn't miss a lick, no backfire and doesn't smell at all.
  12. My daughter is choking on the fuel costs of running her V8 Durango. She found a 2001 Forester in excellent condition for $10,000. from her small town Subaru dealer that's been in business in the same location for 30 years. He's giving her full book for her Durango. She read all the relevant posts on here and feels pretty confident in the car and that she's getting a good deal. Any input? Positive and negative please.
  13. Oh, I forgot: complete exhaust system voltage regulator
  14. Thanks everyone! It was a great feeling! It was only possible with the solid information, encouragement and parts acquired from members here on the board. I actually got to the show last night. We took the Brat and the Baja... we were the only Subies there Premium gas is $2.87... the Baja will have a little nap. So add another vintage Subie to the daily driver list, I drove her to work today and I'll be driving it until the salt trucks roll. (or when it's a zillion degrees outside... no A/C). Now we can concentrate on getting the '50 Ford F-1 tweaked out. She'll be registered tomorrow. Then the '86 will get her turn... she's stripped and primed.
  15. The timing got straightened out and she passed the state inspection! Legal for another year! Pardon my frustration but we have replaced so far due to failure: battery battery cable windshield wipers alternator starter transmission shocks struts right front wheel bearings - twice all axles front right - twice front calipers brake pads gas tank was pulled for a leak thermostat ADS tailgate pull horn lights carburator engine distributor distributor cap plugs plug wires vacuum lines ball joints seats dash interior parts badges (need to put on) rims and tires The sunroof leaks but that will wait a little bit.
  16. Sure! Slice would certainly liven things up! I always tell him he's my favorite nephew (BTW, he's my only nephew). By the way, I need some help here with this '78... timing's borked, it's backfiring at the carb and tailpipe. Tim's at the end of his rope.. he's ready to shoot it... if he doesn't, then I will. Think you and Bri could straighten this thing out? I know you're busy, but... Tim's too close to it right now and the frustration level is off the chart. Let me know!
  17. It's another EA71. She ran like a champ on the way to the custom exhaust shop for the flanges to be recut and welded. She barely made it home, NO power and stalling again. No smoke though. Tim changed out the distributor (electronic) from the original engine and the timing is messed up. It's backfiring out both the tailpipe and carburator. He's at he end of his rope now and quite frankly I am too. This has been one disappointment after the other. I think I'll take up knitting... anyone in need of a custom hand-made car cover?
  18. Since coming on this board we have done things I would have never dreamed of tackling ourselves. Who knew this would become such a rewarding hobby?! It makes me smile! The encouragement, support and parts given by many members is just amazing and I just wanted to say thanks! You are all awesome! Mary
  19. Today. Bits and pieces from each engine. The donor engine was an automatic so that stuff had to be swapped over. The biggest issue is with the exhaust flanges... they don't mate up right. There were studs coming out of the motor on the old engine and this one has holes to put bolts into, and they don't line up. So it sounds like an old John Deere tractor right now. The main part is it fires right up... and the boys feasted on 3 racks of my very own "special" baby back ribs, steak tips and ice cold beer. Life is good!
  20. I just got Felpro gaskets for the dome covers and oil pan for my replacement engine and they're cork. Is this good?
  21. Did you know you can also pole vault when your exhaust falls off at the front? My GL-10 did it while on a hairpin turn exit doing about 25 mph... it was pretty scary. I can't imagine the "air" you'd get from a u-joint! Yikes!
  22. Looks like we're in... with the Baja. I found a few promising inns nearby, they're still at lower summer rates... our old bones need a Serta under them and if hiking is involved the whirlpool will definitely come in handy What about breakfast, lunch, dinner and such?
  23. I don't know how that particular wrap goes on the hoses. I do know that the braided stainless is worse than putting on panty hose in a sauna
  24. Not to mention that the just the air alone rushing through the plastic nozzle and hose creates some serious static charges. Ummm... another FYI, never, ever try to vacuum up blown-in cellulose insulation with a shop vac...
