Brat living in New Hampshire...
About 2 minutes by car to the water. My '78 never gets driven in winter. I do drive the '86 rather than the Baja... it handles much better in the snow, slop and ice. Damn ABS brakes! I'll host the event whenever anyone's game... just let me know when! Connie needs to make her pumpkin bread though... and please make it the same way you did with the substitutions... yum-o! <shhhh, I hid a bunch for me'self to enjoy!>

Welcome! Nice BRAT! What part of NH? There aren't too many of us around here I'm in MA, Loyale91 -NH, BRAgoaT, who just got a BRAT, he's up near the Seabrook border in MA. North Ursalia who just sold his BRAT. CT, NY has a few. I think there are a couple near the Cape. I spoke to a man at a car show, and he told me BRATs are fairly common in NH?

'78's Facelift is Done!
I had the sunroof professionally installed, best not to mess around re-cutting... this one is 2" bigger than the original one. Feels roomier inside, I like it a lot.

There is a rust issue ever since the new paint, all along the bottom driver's side only... it wasn't there before the paint. Why would that happen?? I'm in the process of finding a professional to deal with it. Scary stuff.

Soak 'em down good with hot water and Quik n' Brite (buy online, WELL worth the price), scrub with a brush and shop vac the yuck right out of the fabric. Takes the smell out too! Best upholstery/carpet cleaner in the world, leaves no residue.

Belch? **Diagnosed**
I was driving my '05 Turbo MT Baja yesterday and I kept almost stalling when coming off the clutch. I went on the highway and it acted sluggish as it had for a couple of weeks or so. As I approached the shopping plaza, I pulled out of gear and coasted into the parking lot. We heard what sounded like a blast on a tuba. Deep sound, maybe 2-3 seconds long. We looked at each other, like what was that? I went back into gear and parked. We went into the store for about an hour and came back out. I started up and almost stalled in reverse. Huh? I drove home kind of nursing the clutch and parked for the night. This morning, I was headed on a 200 mile round trip and my CEL came on about 100 yards away from home. I stopped and opened and closed the gas cap since I just filled up just before the tuba noise. The temperature dropped like a rock over night so the gas could have condensed and formed a weird bubble. Anyway, no luck. I drove around the block back home and turned the car off. Did the gas cap again and tried again. No luck. Now I notice that my cruise light is flashing on the dash button where you turn it on. I went down to our friend who has a station close to the house. I had to nurse the clutch all the way down in stop-and-go traffic. I parked on the back side, shut the car off and went inside. About 15 minutes later, the mechanic asked me to drive to the other side of the building. I started up and stalled in reverse with a huge jerk. I restarted and the CEL was out and the cruise light was out. He plugged in his scanner and it couldn't communicate with my car?! He jiggled things, unplugged it re-plugged it, nada. It won't talk back. Here's the kicker.. I made my trip anyway, and the car was normal... responsive, quick, no hesitation... the sluggishness is gone. Huh? He said he's seen cases where some cars have a fit and the computer gets confused... I'm really concerned that his scanner couldn't get any info at all. Yet the car runs perfect. What was that tuba noise? A turbo burp? ** A friend of mine came over with a scanner and seems the cold emissions runner valve was stuck closed (tuba noise). There are no codes at present. **

Brat won't run right
Did you not listen? NEVER, EVER mess with anything that isn't broken for real. BRATs are strange in that things settle themselves out and when you upset anything they get ornery. Change the oil and put gas in it til something really goes wrong ... otherwise leave it as it is. You will learn how to drive IT... like feathering the gas after a long idle in traffic... high idle at a cold start... don't bother to kick it down until the temp gauge hits half-way... downshifting on a steepish hill... stuff like that... it isn't sophisticated, you need to learn the quirks and go with what the car wants. Both of my BRATs have completely different driving sets I need to use... the Baja is another story... no intervention or learning curve (except a touchy first), press and goooo! Whoooshhh! Stopping with those ABS brakes... not so hot.

Squeaky brakes.......Looking for a solution

They stop squeaking after 3-4 good downhill stops, mild stops take a little longer. In very humid weather... lots more stops or never... til the air dries out a bit... this is even true of my '05 Baja? I do hate ABS brakes with a passion.

Slow down kiddo... there are MANY things that will happen... take one step at a time. Owning a BRAT will be a work in progress... as long as you love it. When the love affair is over, let it go. They can be tempermental and very quirky. 99% of the older mechanics around here, that worked on them back in the day, won't touch them. They are easy to work on, but need finessing and a keen eye and ear, they don't want to work that hard, spoiled by computers. If it's the only car you need to kepp going, why not learn it inside and out? It's worth it. This board is the best place to do it!!!

Air Bags and possible Dangers Question

I wear my seatbelt very snug. I dislike ABS brakes well, HATE them actually and refuse to drive them in sloppy weather. I can't understand why the government is trying to make cars "idiot-proof", completely taking away the driver's obligation to operate the vehicle with skill and judgment. Have Americans become that fat, dumb and lazy? Seems so. I'll drive my old gen BRAT make MY own decision when to deploy 4WD and when skid and recover. Geeeesh. What about this car that parks itself??? Ugh!

How long do front axles last for you?
Not for nothing, but back in the day, when I got my '78 BRAT as a birthday gift from my boyfriend, I drove it for 14 years and never changed the axles... the rust gods got the whole car first... that has to say something for new factory axles. The exhaust system was another story... 3 failed during that time frame. My current '78 has eaten 2 in 3 years. I purposely bought used ones for my '86 with 3k or so on them and they are still ok. If a rebuilt is going to fail, it will do it quick enough to at least get your money back
