Neo's '86 Brat. We met him at Moosens and towed it home. Paul stuffed the bed with pieces parts, doo dads and anything else that would fit it and the '78! It'll be like Christmas going through all the boxes and things. Now I have the complete set... GenI, II and III. It has pugs and will get a 3" lift. Needs paint... 2-tone WRBlue/silver rockers and decals? Viper red? The interior is tan so not sure of the silver. What do you think?

The picture of the 1979 Plaza white is identical to my original '78. It had blue interior. Single range 4 sp. no tach. Black roll bar and jump seats. Oh, and an AM only radio.

My Brat's the only one within miles of here... none even in salvage yards. I do see a few wagons... it's kinda funny, in traffic I usually smell them and then look around to find them

Connie, That is one nice coupe... way better looking than the one I had... you're gonna LOVE it! You can drive them for hours without fatigue, the ergonomics are perfect. See you tomorrow! We're heading down to be there around noon.

My original 78' Brat was insured as a truck car and tagged as a passenger car... my insurance man said it was cheaper that way.

Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter. It's a "backronym" ... where a meaning is derived from a word.

I spoke to an officer from an old car club yesterday about the classification of my Brat for an upcoming show. I have to enter mine in the antique truck class even though there's a foreign class. hmmm... wonder if there's a prize for "not expected to last longer than the warranty"? He did mention I'd be the only Brat there, since they rusted out years and years ago (east coast).

I wish our kid's room was that neat!

Is your Subaru dealer competent?

Wanna share his name? The 3 local dealerships here are worthless for older parts. One refuses to look for parts, the other told me to buy a new Subaru?! Way to win a customer huh? -
Oh, I forgot, you got one of those Subaru hood badges?
-
I wish it were only 150 miles... my arithmetic is bad... it takes 3 hours with not getting lost AND breaking the speed limit (by a whole bunch, I might add...), I'm innocent! I wasn't driving
-
My guess is that his wife's name is Jane... Skip would never make that mistake. I hope.
-
Skip? Is that Subaru Badge on the right side of the hood original? I never had one on the first one or this one either.
-
SCORE one for the Skipper! That was the same decal I had on my original white, blue interior... worth the price for the decal alone! AWESOME!

Let mom know that Paul is 100% legitimate. Most people on the internet are ok, just use caution and common sense. Think back, I was the one that was going to bring you the motor from americanyouth if he decided to let it go. I didn't get your message in time or you would have been eating dinner with us at Lonestar... we were only 10 minutes from your house Now, you may be able to take a plate from your registered car to drive it back. Here in MA we don't have temporary tags, so we can do that, we just need a Bill of Sale and our plate that we intend to transfer to the new car. Check with your insurance company or registry.

Our local dealership ordered a gas tank for my Brat... they said it would take a month to 6 weeks to get. Well, it took them one full month to tell me it was unavailable. Doesn't seem like most of them want to deal with the older models. Try Paul at Lithia Subaru in Oregon City, if it's available he'll know... or will certainly find out for you. Good luck! -
Bucky92 Is Bouncing off the Walls Happy!!!

Very nice! Best of luck with her! -
It looks like this could be a rather dicey job and you could end up with a pile of expensive pieces, or a car that doesn't run quite right. I would look around for a lightly used manual. I was in the same boat... I had a 6 month old Hyundai that I hated, talk about no guts! I would go to pass a car and the passing gear would kick in and quit half-way through the pass! I didn't trust the car! I went to buy a new Baja... with my Hyundai's trade-in of half its original sticker price (I didn't pay sticker, but you get the point), and the residual on the loan, a new one was out of the question. Anyway, I found my '05 turbo 5 sp. with only 5,000 mi. on it. The guy traded it in on a Ford truck, when he found the Baja was too small for his needs. The depreciation between both cars was relative to the original sticker prices and my residual so it all balanced out... I ended up with a car that I trust and love driving. Win/win.

You aren't a cynic, not quite yet... you trusted him. There's a fine line between a realist or a cynic... realists know people are out for their own gain yet deep down inside, still trust people. Cynics also know that people suck, but show up with cash on the barrel head, no chance to back out. Done deal.

I am soooo confused!?
Seahag1978 replied to Seahag1978's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ahhhhhhhh... it's all good! Thanks John! Now, why would someone have done that on purpose? It's just strange to rig a car to give yourself an exhaust headache... masochist? -
I have a 1978 Brat, and assume, since it was originally titled in California that it had California emissions. I found and followed the links suggested on my previous post and read the articles... they are all relevant for later models ('81 & up). I have found that the rubber hoses coming off the valve covers are connected to a "T" and the third leg has another rubber hose hanging down toward the ground, connected to nothing. It spews raw exhaust into the engine bay and on occasion, drips a light brown (more watery, not too oily) odorless liquid. I spoke to a reliable Subaru parts manager and he said the two rubber hoses just connect directly to the "T" on the underside of the air cleaner... yet my Buckley's and HTKYSA says there is a reed valve in there somewhere. There's no mention of a silencer. I don't need this fixed to pass emissions, it's exempt... I just had a whole new exhaust installed and it still stinks!

I AM missing another part?!
Seahag1978 replied to Seahag1978's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I found those articles. I think they for newer models, I don't think there was a silencer on the '78. Can anyone here take a picture of theirs? Or should I just plug the hose and call it a day? I appreciate any help on this. Thanks, Mary -

Seahag1978 replied to Seahag1978's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks, I'll search karinvail's posts to see if I can find it. The hose goes nowhere, just hangs down, pumping the raw exhaust into the engine bay? It was done on purpose and didn't just fall off, I'm sure it needs to connect to something. The Buckley's manual has several set ups for '78... when something isn't there, it's tough to figure what should have been. My emissions diagram under the hood is faded and I can't read it. -
I had that exhaust system that I go from soda1019 installed on my '78 Brat. Well, the truck was still leaking exhaust into the cabin, big time!! We popped the hood and found the problem. There is a 3/4" to 1" hose coming off each side of the engine into a "T" and another hose of the same size coming off the bottom of the "T" and hanging loose down toward the ground. It's puffing the raw exhaust fumes under the hood and they're coming right into the cabin. Looking in HTKYSA it looks like the two hoses coming off the engine go into a "reed valve" and then into the air cleaner? Is this right?

Did you have your own insurance on it? If, so then file a claim with your own company and they will get it from the transport company... insurance companies don't like to pay out if they can collect it elsewhere! If I'm not mistaken, all transporters have to be insured AND bonded against any damage done while in their care (with the exception of fluid leaks from another vehicle above). They are usually very clear on marking prior damage on the manifest slip. I would check a bit further by contacting the ICC for more information and standards of conduct, ie: was he responsibe for correcting a situation in order to stem further damage. Good luck!
