It's covered in insulation... lots of it, the pipe is still the same size, but there is a insulation cover and then another pipe over it... I cut one apart once and was surprised... I do like the idea though.

New GL10, Shooting for high 14's?
kingbobdole replied to crazy_squirrels's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry... I was more referring to the OP... BTW, for having such a high SAT score you should be able to spell capable:-p J/K J/K Here's my second opinion on making it fast... SPFI block + over torque the heads a bit + legacy turbo at abouts 12psi. Intercooled of course. GUT the interior... all of it. Done, welcome to 14's:burnout: -
Uhhh.. no. I've built both harnesses now. First, an 01 MY SOHC EJ25 for my 88 Rx and now an 03 MY EZ30 for my XT... there is a VAST world of difference in the wiring and the ECU. Firstly, they do not share the same connectors. The 2.5 computer has 3 plugs and 93 pins. The EZ30 has 4 plus and 105 pins. On the engine side it is different as well... the engine has 4-5 plugs on the EZ and the EJ IIRC has only 2-3. The engine also is runs differently. The EZ30 has 2 knock sensors, 2 front O2 sensors and amazingly, coil on plug. The 2.5 has none of this, and no amount of reprogramming the ECU is going to help that. You want a quick test to see if I'm as crazy as most tell me? Get both of the wiring diagrams under your nose. In fact you can just time them printing... the EJ25 was 4 pages of wiring.. really a cake job to build, took me just over 10 hours IIRC. The EZ30 is 10 PAGES of wiring... it took me well over 20 hours to build it. EJ EZ not quite done.. the extension to the OBD2 connector needs wrap.

The answer is too often the same - "EJ it"
kingbobdole replied to audio_file's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
so much drama. So I have both, or all.. whatever. My first subject is the stereotyped legendary EA82T in my 88 Rx. I got the car cheap, caught up on some maintenance work and such and intercooled it... even put on a hood scoop... I got hardly 6 months out of the car when one day, out of the blue it started smoking out of the exhaust one morning... and it was done. So I swapped it for an EJ25, which I think GD might have said something like "swapping one HG problem for another"... but it might have been Dave. Here's another point of interest... the "old" rx was pushing probably high 18's in the 1/4 and getting a hard earned 22ish MPG... the "new" Rx runs 15's (I'm a mile high BTW) and never gets under 25 MPG no matter how I flog it. Typically it gets over 30 MPG.. and that's Subarus 2nd red haired child... but I digest MY other vehicle of interest is my EA82 N/A 87 lifted 29'd wagon. It started life carbbed, but I made it SPFI and like GD said... It's probably the best thing ever(the SPFI) And honestly on this car I replaced the cooling hoses since they were in rough shape and just drove the car. I didn't touch anything on the engine for three years. I drove it through some water... well a lot of water... many times. Amazingly a few days passed before it toasted a timing belt bearing. I love the SPFI EA82s, best EA82 I've ever owned, mostly because the others were turbos. When/if I toast the HGs in the wagon... I'll probably get lazy and rebuild it. You can ask the locals... my lifted wagon is amazingly fast... To sum up.. I HATE the EA82T... but the N/A's I've never had much trouble with... EA81s.. I've owned a few.. SPFI'd one of them. Seems to be a good motor, but I generally don't like the body style... I prefer the toasters and door stops that came later.:-p And finally as far as GD goes.. he is an rump roast, but he also is a great wealth of info. I used to kinda have a problem with his blunt "I'm right" attitude, but I got over it... mostly because I tend to agree with him. Ohh and as far as you wanting more power out of your EA82T.. just EJ it, you'll be fine:grin: /book -

This may not work for you, but when I put the EJ everything in my 88 3 door EA82 car, I used the stock front piece with the center section of the legacy H added to the center. Before After Done -
I'ma show up again and rain on your parade. The EJ25 and EZ30 do NOT share the same ECU.

That looks like the same HF winch I mounted on top of my bumper! Just a note... the thing is mostly useless... I got it to pull people out of snow drifts during the winter, but this winter hasn't been that bad... also, the thing is not water proof. I haven't had mine on too long, but it no longer works. The relay clicks when you hit the remote, and the motor moves when you jump it... something in between is borked... Anyway, nice stealthy set-up... Great for pulling ATVs, and maybe your own engine... on board hoist... oh fo sho

snag the TCU from the donor car as well... I did a swap on a 93 legacy.. put a 94 auto into it and the duty solenoid C would not get power (full 4wd bindingness) I swapped the TCU (plug and play) and all the problems were gone... It's located under the steering column where a ECU would be on a loyale.

feel free to go ahead and ship me your front bumper at any time... Where'd you get it? Awesome

Just as a note... I'm running a 2.5 in my 2600 Lbs Rx... It should be about 165 HP at the crank, but I have a few mods. I also live a mile up and run my car at Bandimere in Golden Colorado. The car runs high 15's... Just FYI... Point being that the wagon is heavier, and 160+ HP out of an EA82 just isn't going to happen reliably and cheaply. If you really want to get a cheap swap done... shoe horn a EG33 into the beast. -
+1 on all that... The EZ has a different harness... dealer's not going to go there unless you get under some lemon law or something... and get a new car. As far as your car goes, they need to either get you a new long block or have the engine decked and new heads.... sounds like the block is probably warped and they just like wasting time.

I just used a big hammer. Like that, except instead of the horse... it was a wagon. and I did it at like 2 am...

You can pick-up an EJ25 for like $500... I couldn't find an EZ30 for anything under $2800... As far as the wiring being similar... uhh no. I've built Both an EJ25 harness from a 2001 SOHC EJ25 and the recent 03 EZ30 harness. The plugs on the ECU may be similar, but what does that get you? The Ej ECU will not run the EZ... EZ is coil on plug and uses a fuel controller and are all fancy autos. Plus the engine side of the harness is the biggest change.. The EJ25 is similar to the 22... only 2 plugs going to the back of the engine. Actually.. I just compared both wiring diagrams.. the EJ ECU only has 3 connectors, the EZ has 4... 2.5 has 93 pins at the ECU, EZ has 105. The 2.5 diagram is 4 pages long... the EZ is 10. yeah, freakin 10 pages of wiring. so no go there... This is the harness I built for the Rx, SOHC EJ25. As far as the immobilizer goes, there was another major change that year... the R. ALL EZ30Rs are immobilizer cars... if no R no immobilizer. You an tell just by looking as well. The R has a plastic intake and V-tec with cam timing.... and 20 more ponies.

I posted... how do you make that site... wider? or is it just me?

MAKE SURE you get the correct year car... the first few years of the EZ30 saw quite a few changes... As far as wiring goes... It's rather complex... the largest harness I've built to date... I went from this, the entire harness: To this, the engine harness: in about 20 or so hours..... I'll be putting mine into an XT

Tachometer hook up (ea81 to ej22 swap)
kingbobdole replied to Pooparu's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Check your wiring again. On my EJ25 swap there are 2 wires going to the EJ dash, and one was for the spedo. Are you sure you grabbed the tach signal for the dash as well?
