Didja get the driver's into the car yet? My scheme was to cut the "feet" offa the stock rails and weld them to the sti rails. lika so But then they were to high for my XT so I cut into the car where the seat bolted and lowered that... it was quite the pain.....

Yes... that's why he mentioned... He's been trying to ditch it for a while... prety complete Rx last time I saw it, but by now it might need a few things.

Heated power legacy seats in 87 GL
kingbobdole replied to kingbobdole's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Thanks guys! It is very nice... and actually the two seats were VERY different. The Sti seat was much more of a PITA, but then I had to lower mine due to the roof line and my big head in the XT. I'm still loving them. A few things I have noticed... first the legacy seats go MUCH farther back, giving me more front room and snapping the legs off of the people in the back. Secondly, they are thinner. I can now put a can of soda on the right side of the Ebrake, where before the seat was much to much in the way.... Extra cup holders baby! I also now have map pockets, a rear center arm rest and ohhh... the heaters are about the best invention since air conditioning! I need to fix that..... -
ACK! no pics! photobucket FTW!

Idaho Springs sounds fun... I think we are all in so far... Where should me meet to start the pool? Anyone who wants to ride along, the wagon has new seats, although the two heated ones will be taken I'm sure:rolleyes: -
+1 Very open question... and politics might be safer:-p I recommend the EJ25 engine, I have one in my Rx. Some people will call this engine "trash" or a "different headgasket problem". I haven't had any issues with mine and the fuel milage and power I think are worth it.

SO I want to set-up a meet, but amazingly I have never done it before. With Yeti buying Mike's wago, and Mike getting some new wheels and my seats and Jeff's still on the road, I figured it was about time to check in with everyone again. I chose this date totally at random, It's a Saturday a little less then a month out. It can be changed. As far as location goes, I am undecided.. should probably be discussed. If no one offers a place (cannot remember who's we were at last time with the awesome big back yard, but that was a nice set-up and a good location) we can have it at my house... Shouldn't be too freakishly cold, but that might change the meet up a bit if it is... indoor or outdoor, or even the date. Discuss:banana:

I for one like OBD2... I have a '00 EJ25 in my Rx, and yes it takes more sensors to run... kinda. I left out a bunch, and the thing still runs. Plus I can hook a scan tool up to it and read out the codes nice and neat. I can also datastream it and it's just easier to find out what's wrong. As far as wiring goes, It's not that many more wires... about 9 or so to the plug and maybe 30 overall more then OBD1... but once you're at that point, what's fifty more wires?

Hey all, I'm finishing my current project of last Sunday soon, and thought I'd post an update for those interested. As seen on my For sale post, I bought a very wrecked '03 Legacy VDC with an H6. It was a very nice car and has given me very nice things :-p Anyway, on to business. The goal was to install the very nice seats into my wagon. Yes, they are tan, and yes I have a grey interior.... If anyone has some grey leather seats they wish to trade, I'll listen:rolleyes: Ok, so Sunday I got to here. I actually got the rear bottom part of the seat in Saturday. That was pretty straight forward. My first idea was to take the pad and cover off the new seat and put it on the old seat, but it didn't quite fit right. So I measured the distance between the two front mounting holes on both seats and noted a 2" difference. I went to the new seat, measured 1" in on each side and drilled a new front hole. Then taking the old seat hinges, I cut the backs off of them(where the seat back "sits" when folded forward) because they were too long. Lined, squared, drilled a second hole and bolted the hinges on, reapplied the pad and cover and installed. I didn't get the latch on it yet, to hold it down, but an interesting side note is that the latch on the old '87 seat is 100% identical to the latch on the '03... strange For the front seats it was a bit different. I had saved the majority of the seat harness out of the donor and snazzed it up a bit to rig it into mine. Basically I combined all the grounds to both the heaters and the seat motor in 2 different locations. I combined all the power wires into one wire, running to a relay directly power by the battery. Then the relay is activated off of the fuse for the cig lighter, so the heaters and seat only work when the key is on, or in the acc position. Then after removing the old seats and center console, I ran the wiring under the carpet and up through the console. Today, I ran the power wire to the battery and wired the relay and installed the switches (pics to follow) I cut a hole in the shifter cover just to the right of the D/R shifter for the switches. Now as far as mounting the front seats what I did was simple Firstly, I bent the snot out of the front mounts. In the 03, they point out at a 45 degree angle, but in the 87 they are more like 90 degrees. So a pair of channel locks and 3-5 seconds later, problem solved. Next in the rear there was a fitment issue with the seat belt. In the 03, the seat belt attaches to the side of the seat, but I wanted to keep my stock belts. So I pulled the belt and looked.... the hole was almost lined up... also, the inside of the hole where the seat belt would go back on was inclosed. Kinda hard to describe it, I'll try to get pics tomorrow. Basically the belt would hit it. The solution was to use the angle grinder... probably not the best tool to use, but its fast:burnout: I slotted the rear hole and cut the top off of the mount so the belt could stick up. Then I bolted that in as well. The outer side, I kinda left hanging... basically I just need to find a big bolt, drill a hole in the car and apply. The final task is to bolt the rear seat back in. The '87 had a peg system where it just stuck into the rear of the car. The '03 has hinges and is bolted to the floor... I think I'll take both, make some sort of peg for the out sides of the '03 and drill holes for the center hinge. There is also a problem with the area where it latches not being thin enough....

I used a skid plate for my skid plate... IIRC it's from an '04 Toy Taco. This thread needed more pics anyway:-p

a day wasn't quick enough?:-\ you let her buy a VW? -
+1... I'm 6'4" and disliked my lack-of-room BRAT... Solution is to get shorter(or thinner) seats and a smaller steering wheel.

Ok EJ swapped guys, need an opinion
kingbobdole replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
My Rx is a two piece... and IIRC I had it shortened about 2"... either way should be fine on your car... but a whole new driveshaft will cost you big $$. My advice is to get an ea81 shaft and see how much it needs to be lengthened(if at all)... then check out the u joints... I paid about $80 for mine to be shortened... no worries yet. -
How do I get my Sti Key Blank to work?
kingbobdole replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I disagree... My XT-6 has a very tight ignition and doors.... the key is only slightly wider then a EA series key... not by much. When I had mine done, I had it cut by code.... and it didn't work right off... I had to smooth out the first 1/8" from a sharp point to a more swoopy smoothy thingy. (<-technical term) Anyway I used my pocket leatherman at the dealer and got it to work... even the parts guy was impressed.:-p Heres a pic: -

My RX>Your GL:-p Looking good Russ... I need some supertones... not that I use the horn much. Hey you need a grille? I think I might have a slightly damaged slightly primered white one

I guess I'm one of those EA82 "lovers" I actually HATE the turbo ones, but my current wago has an SPFI one. I built this car originally for $1500 TOTAL! Lift, tires, tint, SPFI conversion and the price of the wagon. But I'll admit, after driving it around for almost three years without doing anything but oil changes, the timing gear did give me trouble, and I had to replace it all... Geeze... you'd think it would just last forever! I guess I better go to gears or single belts!:-p Naw, I just fixed it for about $100 in parts, and threw in a clutch and some other things here and there... so I have probably about $2000 total into it now... it's a real money cow. Rick's old wagon cost him less... He got the car for free and we gave it one of those highly troubled EA82s from an XT... That's me driving BTW So basically I disagree with GD, but that's pretty common. I DO think that the EA82 can be reliable, but you just have to make sure that it is, cooling system especially. Timing belts... to me not a big deal, it breaks, I fix. Not that hard or time consuming. Plus I love my tight turning circle and still good milage.

How's Your Hill Holder?
kingbobdole replied to Subarule's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wagon's works... never hooked it back up on my RX after the swap.... need to get around to doing that... adjusting is easy, set on hill, clutch in brake on, in netural... let foot off brake, then see if it holds... no? tighter! Yes, but disengages high? looser! -
possible lightweight hatch class for EA82 coupe.
kingbobdole replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There's also that wire in there... not that it adds much... Last time I tried to pick up a rear door I about died... it's farkin heavy! -
+1... the SPFI is a simple stupid computer. If it's running without an O2 it will run a strict preprogrammed fuel map, but with the O2 it can mod that map and change to what it needs to be with-in range of the fueling capabilities of the injector... which shouldn't be a problem for you.

Proud "new" owner of a 1987 hatch.
kingbobdole replied to TheYeti's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
soooo........... what am I putting your SPFI in again... Wagon? Brat? Hatch? Nice score... I'll have to see it sometime... ohh and No CO hatch patrol you hosers! You cannot count me out just because I have too many doors! My wagon still reigns supreme AFAIK! :-p ... well as long as the dizzy is dry anyway -
yes and no. YES All you need out of the LSD is the chunk... the carrier. No it is not always necessary to grind... but it helps....
