My first Subaru - 86 XT GL
kingbobdole replied to NocturneVoyager's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good choice for your first soob... the XT-6 was my first and now I have 3 soobs total and have gone through like a billion of them. It'll break, but it's always an easy fix. enjoy it and love it.... if you are nice you should be able to get over 30 MPG... -
Alcyone ( XT XT6 SVX ) Dragon Meet News

Not sure which is funnier... that I have the same thing going on here with the yellow paper XT6 or that you also have the Loyale Subaru badge on the top of your monitor.... -

next week-o bumpage -
I just had to show up and be able to sell stuff basically... and NO, I HATED IT. I'm a mechanic not a negotiator, dealing with people wining and crying about their cars and how much they wanted to pay to have what done is a royal PITA. Some would be nice and easy get what they want and need and go. Some were cheap skates, but the real joy were the people that wanted to argue the price or what needed to be done.. just too much of a headache for me, and honestly the Ford dealer I worked for would have rather I made cars out worse then they were so that I could sell more. I did pay well though:)

It's that time again, and since Shawn didn't know about it I thought it best to cross link it. AWD Pirates is again having a meet next Sunday, the 29th... 10 AM at the same lower north lot! More info here: http://www.awdpirates.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=23165 Looks like there is also going to be a cruise.

hi-o I'm with numbchux on this one. I work as a mechanic.. ALL cars break. 92 loyales AND 2007 Fords, I see it all. No amount of "new" car is going to protect you more so then an "old" car. "a warranty doesn't change reliability" So true.. I actually bought a brand new car because I was tired of my old crappy car. I chose poorly and got a new to the USDM Ford Focus in 2000. Only left me stranded once in the first 3 years, but luckily I was a service writer at a Ford dealer at the time. It also, like some new cars had a "few" recalls (unlike most new cars with recalls, my focus had 28 IIRC) Truth of the matter is that it is not the AGE of the car, but the CARE that is given to it... You can buy an 87 GL, like I did and dump a few grand into it to make the drive line basically new and it will be as reliable as a new car as long as I keep on top of it. Which launches me into another rant, some can stop reading here and go down a bit if you like as it is a slight bit off topic. NO ONE takes proper care of their cars. No one. Right now you are thinking "ohh, but I sure do! I'm a car guy." No, you are probably wrong... Here's an example: Do you check the oil level EVERY time you get gas? Most manufactures say that it is a required part of maintenance. Lots of old Subaru guys(I'm guessing) keep a pretty good eye on their oil level. Ok then smarty... when's the last time you flushed out your power steering fluid? brake? diffs? trans? coolant? Some of these services are needed every three years(30k) while others are every year. I don't take the 100% best care of my cars, but I try to get done what needs to be done as I can afford it, having 3 cars makes it hard. I do the brake flush every year, diffs, trans and power steering I do when I purchase the car, or do a swap:banana: and coolant... well I kinda slack on that... it gets changed when it gets bad. ok I'm done [/crazedmaintenancerant] Any hoo, back OT, I agree fully with the OP. Yeah, buying an STi is a great shortcut, but I would personally never trade any one of my cars for one JUST to have a better faster nicer car because I don't go on a "got to have it" frenzy and the old saying, "No matter how fast you are, there is ALWAYS someone faster" On top of that I'm a weird guy. I didn't shove my Focus off on my father because it was unreliable(wasn't bad) or got old... it was just... boring. I do NEED to stand out. To the cops, t3h ladies or who ever turns my way. I love when old guys in new Land cruisers give my lifted GL the "Rock on" \m/ or when kids in preludes ask what my yellow lowered XT-6 is, and how'd it get so fast. Or when some old guy tells me my ej25 swapped Rx is missing a fender:grin:  I just love the attention that my old cars get, they may not be the fastest or handle the best but I've turned this thread into a love fest with my super long post.

Yes! I had totally forgotten about that stuff... you should have reminded me earlier.... I was wondering what that stuff was in my parts closet.... writing it down now.... And I was gonna bring Potato Salad. Phooey Darn... I guess I'll just bring chips. ohh and BTW... We DID get Rick's wagon done today... it was a PITA and it is rigged to hell and back but damnit it RUNS! On a side note he may not show.
-
thanks.... still no idea... put an EJ22 back there today and it still makes the noise(not that I was trying to load it... just needed to move the engine...) I think I'll either cut the springs a touch or get 2wd springs... or new struts

I hate my XT6 with Every little peice of my Soul
kingbobdole replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Connie... buy a cheap buffer and some Polish... not wax, but polish... I used nu finish(orange bottle) on my rustolem and it looks friggin AWEOSOME... ohh and isn't it nice? You have XT-6 experiance so now it'll be easier for you to kick melis into fixing hers:banana: The lightest no-so-factory XT-6 is mine... or Ben's.. FWD MT5 XT6 should weight in at around 2700 Lbs... but I think that's a full complement weight(peoples and their junk) When I weighed my 2.5 Rx it came to a smooth 2600 Lbs on the nose and I think that the XT would be lighter. -
I used to compare my lifted wagon to a guys Jeep that used to work with me. We both had about 13" of clearance. I have 29's he had like 30 or 31's. I have a rear locker, he couldn't afford one yet. I have about $1500 tied up in my wagon(bought it for like $200) He was still paying off the $15k loan:eek: and didn't know what he had in the lift and tires.... I think I won. Anyway I also love my soobs... I'm down to 3 at the moment since nothing has caught my eye recently and I like my current mix. Wagon for the snow, Rx for the rain and XT-6 for the summer. I think I'll keep my XT-6 for much longer... until I die... ehh... maybe I'll be buried in it, just to be a PITA.
-
So I accidentally bought some 2wd rear struts off da ebay for my Rx and it sat too high... so I decided that the wagon could always use more lift so I swapped the strut on the wagon with the 4wd springs. It was a tight fit, but I got them on sans a single washer on top of the upper spring perch. Now the wagon makes all kinds of noise from the rear, like the struts are blown... like a knocking. Is it because there is too much tension on the struts due to the longer 4wd springs?

musta got a deal... Its a pretty cake swap if you use the new gen driveline as well... You'll need a custom driveshaft and then there is the wiring... I don't have a WRX motor, but I do have a '00 LGT 2.5 SOHC and it was mostly cake.

Ohh! I see how it is! I thought you cared!

kingbobdole replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oh it's on like Donkey Kong now! blah blah blah... you just haven't taken a ride in a well tuned XT-6... Mine will blow the doors off of a 2.5 Rs... cake walk. I can kill a WRX off the line easy... And I get 25 MPG and can use regular(if I wanted) plus this is a motor based off the EA82 that was designed in the early 80s... and they still are around today. I love mine... Torque FTW! Shhh... you don't know what your talking about here... the XT-6's power steering is great. Yeah, mine was not working when I got it... but I slapped new brushes in it and it has been fine ever since... like 6 years now and I haven't had to even think about it. It's about the best idea on the entire car. All that said, if/when I blow this motor either of its own doing or my evil doings I probably will do a new gen swap... maybe something of the EZ30 variety:banana: -
Can i make the EA82 Loyale into a Turbo EA82??
kingbobdole replied to TheLoyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've thought about doing it to my wagon... I'm at 5400 feet or so with my carbbed to SPFI swap and then an intercooler.... Moderate compression+Turbo+altitude=slightly fastAR wagon... then again I HAVE the parts to do it AND I'll hopefully have an EJ22 here pretty soon.... I say it CAN be done, but you need to watch it like a hawk... and personally I'd add a wideband and RRFPR to the list o' things if I was going to do it.... I think the single injector can fuel enough for 7 psi... I mean it's not like we are talking 5367 HORSEPOWER!!!! here... more like 120hp....at the crank.... maybe. Other then that he can always swap the heads and ECU and harness and make a go at it... but personally I'd just go EJ... cheaper, faster, better. Ohh and I stand corrected... the SPFI ECU and the Turbo ECU ARE different... I was thinking N/A MPFI... loyale, duh. I missed that. the Fuel pumps are the same though:rolleyes: -
Speaking of bugs.... I got smoked in my SW by a very stock sounding(and driving) one... don't underestimate them... they are not that slow. Course my 90HP wagon had 4 people and junk in it and the 29's on it.

kingbobdole replied to TheLoyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Actually I say just get an intercooler, up pipe, down pipe and crossmember.. ohh and the pesky turbo. High compression turbo FTW... just knock back the timing a bit... Also I thought that the ECU's were the same, just more parts added on... Ohh, and the fuel pumps are the same.
