Hello from a new Rocky Mountain member
kingbobdole replied to Matt Monson's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Howdy! If you're up at Christophe's project this Sunday, I'll see you there... I'm buying his motor:banana: -
Heres my reason.... s.. A. You are right it is not complicated, but it is complex, like already said its not going to be a bolt on like the SPFI. B. I've worked on a BMW and VW that had this and the little plastic hoses look like trouble, they always seem brittle to me C. Its not as efficient as SPFI. To me the SPFI is a glorified electronic carb, the Bosch CIS is below that to me. Its more like a MPFI carb, but it still seems all vacuum managed. D. My personal Bias: I hate bosch stuff, it has never served me well in the past ever on Japanese cars. The first set of plugs I got for my 6 were Bosch, they went out in a few days, fouled. Replaced them with NGKs with no other changes, and 4 years later I'm on the same NGKs(need to get those changed:lol: ) So I'm sorry if I offended, I'd just hate to see you waste your money on hokey fuel injection when the SPFI is so nice, cheap and easy to install. That said, do what you want. Your car, your money.

I pulled the rear discs off my wagon in the gravel... it sucked, my huge floor jack dug it own grave, but I just jacked it up more.
-
Hate to be a rain cloud, but I will... the wiring is a bit different. The XT uses a integrated idle switch/TPS where the turbo does not. The spider intake is cool like that. I have a theory on how to make it work... but you won't like it:-\
-
reinventing the wheel gets you this: Bosch CIS is about the stupidest idea ever, not on a Subaru mind you, on any car. Its just a crazed manual fuel injection that over complicates something thats as nice as the SPFI. The nice thing about swapping the Subaru SPFI is that it looks nice and stock, no matter how bad you do it, it still looks nice.

What to pay for an 80 wagon
kingbobdole replied to RdNkBrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
For compairison: I got my clean straight 88 Rx in almost running(needed battery clamps:banana: ) for $400. I got my 87 carbbed D/R wagon in slight rust but RUNNING condition (I even tried to drive it home till it blew that little PITA bypass coolant hose under the intake... ) for.... $200 My thoughts. Rust free... $400 or less... Rust takes off $200, any worse shape... $100.. Feel the guy out. and heres the trick. BE A wongleflute. I always am, no matter how bad I feel I'm lowballing, it has NEVER gotten me kicked squa in the nutts. You offer too high and you can never go back, so start low, really low... ohh and if they think the lifter noise is a rod knock, or that the snapped timing belts mean new motor(not this car mind you) SUPPORT that though and play dumb:eek: Damn I'm Evil:dead: -
Thanks! Yeah if you watch that last vid you'll notice that I'm driving Ricks wagon... not only did I go up that crest 3 times, but I backed the yellow one down it once. I figured if I rolled it, hey... it wasn't my car:grin: cuz I'd hate to roll my pretty wagon

I think this mini has us beat:grin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61omPpPBxF8

Thanks for the offer gary but I actually have an XT6 alt almost ready to go on the wagon, and the Rx blew its HGs yesterday while my dad drove it....

I have two cars now that are overcharging. My 88 Rx I have an after market gauge on and when it gets about 15 I'll turn something on... Normally it doesn't do it, but it comes and goes.... it also turns the dash lights on lightly, and I'm sure the RX needs an alt. It has a new T plug. My wagon is a bit different. Yesterday it started charging at 16-17 volts at random... no idiot lights. I checked it with a volt meter and it is very high... Checked the T plug and it looks good, cleaned and reapplied dielectric.... Is it also the Alt, or is there something else I might check? I just need to finish converting my XT6 alt:rolleyes:

Group Buy: Carbon Fiber or Fiberglass Hoods
kingbobdole replied to Marck's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
+1 on getting the money beforehand. I doubt the stock hood is 60 lbs... more like 35-40 or so I'd say. As far as the hood goes, its a bit too rich for my blood... Of the 2 EA82 cars I have, one I paid $200 for and the other $400... theres no way I'm gonna put a $565 hood on either one of those cars.:-\ Good luck with the sale tho! -
Thanks! :-p

Building the ultimate ea81 on a budget
kingbobdole replied to 75subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think Jeff's crazy. 110 HP seems like quite the power out of an SPFI car. SPFI is like really, really fancy carburation. Changing the way you get fuel really doesn't up the HP, its just a more efficent way of throwing fuel through the motor. They start at 90 HP with the 9:1 compression. 20 HP gain seems out there especially with lower compression. All I'm saying is that 110-115 is not going to be "easy" on a SPFI EA81, its gonna take a bit of work to get there... Yes. The SPFI swap is awsome. MPG FTW! -

Does it rarely see the road like the rest of your cars? :-p -
He rolled a paseo... haven't you seen his ear?... or lack of ear?:-\ BTW... whos gonna be the designated "pull Jeff out of the ditch" guy?

HEY! Anyway... Judging from the lift kit on my SW... its a Allied (no longer made) but any similar lift kit should work just fine on an XT or XT-6. Firstly the 4 and the 6 have basically the same rear suspension... my lift kit has an upper spacer, and diff hanger drops... so no problem there. on the front it drops the engine, but the cradles bolt up the same, so thats good. Next is the upper strut tops, thats the 3 bolts there, and that should be the same... never tried it, but it looks identical. Then the strut rod/tranny member "blocks" are dropped and thats the only thing you might have an issue with.. again, it looks the same but I've never tried it. The only difference suspension wise between the 4 and the 6 are the lower arms, hubs and the lower end of the strut really. it should work I think:)

I use regular in my Rx... is that a problem? :-\ I hope not. I'll throw in my 2 cents on the EA82T... I hate it. like lots. This has to be the worst idea for a motor subaru ever came up with. With the poor cooling of the closed deck combined with the crappy rads they threw in these cars its amazing they last as long as they do. For me, even intercooled stock its hard to fix all the temper tantrums it throws at me. Forst the purge is crazed, then its leaking coolant out of the radiator, then the coolant bypass blows, then it blows the colling hose to the turbo, now it leaks from under the motor.. now its got an intake leak... this thing never stops trying to make me buy parts for it. Then again it does have a touch over 212K on it and I havent really done anything to it ever. Now I'm just hoping the guy with the EJ25 calls me back:banana:

long term engine storage tips?
kingbobdole replied to hooziewhatsit's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Two of my 3 were sitting for 2 or more years before I bought them... full of fluids and all... I never did anything to them, both started right up and run great:banana: -
Right.. I know you love my car. You dream about it at night so just get over it all ready and fess up. My Subbis > your subbi :-p
