The Pure Evil that is my Rx
kingbobdole replied to kingbobdole's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
10-4... I've actually been running a 16 lbs one on my XT-6 for years... granted the cooling system is a bit bigger, but I see no issues... I'll keep you up to date if it heads south. -

Not to get this thread back on topic but..... New 16 lbs Rad cap FTW... car runs nice and cool now... little less then a 1/4 on the temp, and I drove it all over today. mucho happier with it now:banana: -
I'll say one last thing about serpentine... at least the defenition of it... its mostly used to describe a single multi ribbed belt that goes around all accessories and runs everything... Thing about it is that you can have one, just take the outer belt off, thats the harry line... I'm not sure that theres any other cars that have a 2 belt system where one of the belts runs everything anyway... ohh and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serpentine_belt

Careful now... thats a pic of mike's car:eek:

a ticking that comes and goes
kingbobdole replied to matts87glsedan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
heres a trick NEVER use a engine oil stop leak. EVER... in my 6, even tho its well sealed and such if I use that stuff it'll make it tick... also if the car has been sittiong of just old, especially if it doesnt leak much... just try some MMO or seafoam in it... I'm trying seafoam ATM, but I'm not quite on the boat, MMO in thhe past has worked faster for me. -
heres how it is. Xts have 2 serp belts, and the setup is like the wagons and other thingies... one belt runs all, the other runs most. The XT6 only has one small belt... no PS so just water alt and AC... the wagons and the XTs are different, even 85-86... the wagon N/T MPFI will have V belts, the XT will have the SAME engine, just serp belts... Why? I donno. nothing else on the motor has changed. XT Turbo with mulit ribbed belts: XT6 you can see the fat 6 rib belt in thhe front, sorry only pic I have with a belt on the motor:confused:

mpfi injection/turbo -> spfi pistons
kingbobdole replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mikes car is very fast, even up here in CO... He needs to intercool it tho, so that when we race I dont totally kill him in my XT, just smoke him:lol: -
I say SPFI.. I love my wagon even tho it has those weak timing belts... I just dont like push rods, such old technology... and its not like I'm breaking belts left and right all the time....:-p
-
I'm not 100% but I think there are 2 different brackets that hold the accessories on the different cars.. one for outboard ac one for inboard...
-
no you were right the first time... all XTs, weather its an early or late, 6, turbo or NA ALL should have serp belts. Serp belts dont suck, they are just different..... try spilling some coolant on a v and see what happend, serps grip better... if they sucked so much, why do all the new cars use serp belts? onn and on my 6 I have a replacement.. and its really easy to install, more so then a ea series motor belt.. ohh and it was $6.... and I have the same amount of tensioners as my ea cars in my 6... I have no biased either way tho... I have cars with both

ok, i think its fixed... hopefully it will be ungodly hot tomorrow so I can make sure. I got a new rad cap, and a slightly higher pressure one... Turned on the AC and flogged it and it only got up to a bit over 1/8th... and it didnt makes its gurgle gurgle sound... I'll keep you up to date... Mines a plastic rad (now) but I did check the mating surface, it looks fine. -

ok, the saga continues.. it was a bit cooler today, like 92 not 98 like yesterday. drove to work, not even at 1/4 on the gauge... awsome. drive it back, again AC on, its a bit hotter out... not eve to 1/2.. great, park it in the garage, run it for about 30 seconds to let it cool, temp drops slightly, awsome... shut it down pop the hood (gonna drain some oil and put seafoam in to quiet the lifers a bit more) and you can hear the intake gurgling, so I pull the reserve lid and watched.. it was push fluid out, then pulling it back in... but it didnt get to the top, so it stayed inside... you could hear it boiling or what ever and you could feel it in the upper hose... Ideas? -

Awww... dont tell me that.. this car just got HGs a few years ago according to the old man... plus that means the death of this car. Also if it was that.. wouldnt it do it while the car was running? I also checked for air in the rad, since I kinda wanted to know that too.... -

I just thought of the rad cap... but I put a different one on it today too, not a new one... I might try that -

no, sorry... its spraying out the reserve tank cap... the reserve tank gets really pressurized and when its shut off it just loads up and either the cap blows off (once) or just shoots the coolant out from under the reserve tank cap -
Have you done the one under the tank on the top of the pump? Other wise there are 2 hoses and then the connections on the rack... not much to it

Ok. So no matter what I do my Rx serves only one function: Transporting coolant to the place it's going to dump it all over the ground.... ohh, for no reason... It has had a cooling issue... never got overheated, but close.. like 1/8" down from over... so I decided to go through it today, put in a new rad, old was filled with rats nest in the fins, and had been resoldered like 4 times.. got a new single core aluminum, also put on a known good crank fan and made sure the ele fan worked.. So I roll it out (car has no Tstat, so no real burping issues I did run it and burp it tho) and its doing great... I even turn on the AC and the car barely gets over half on the gauge.. drive it to work and let it cool for a minute... shut it off, no problem... walk awa.... psssshhhhtttt. damnit! took a big piss all over the ground, same old issue. car did not get hot, but still drained the reserve on the ground. BEFORE I put the new rad in when it got up to 3/4... you could hear the cap trying to escape you can hear the gurgle, and the moan.. then the pssshttt... Question one: WTF?!?!?! Question two: is the reserve cap supposed to hold pressure? Maybe its just me, but when it comes to cooling the EA82T is the worstest:mad: Any other thoughts are welcome

Hey... I figured I'd arrive and share. The Xt6 rocks.. I vote it the best of all 80's subarus (ohhhh! ) anyway, you should just keep her stock and fix it up.. a stock AWD will probably get about 80-100 hoorse to the ground, so thats not bad with the AWD.. but its got gobs of torque and its relativly maintance free once you settle into the issues it might have. Great fun to drive... and yes, I will be turboing mine soon... I was going to start last week, but its been very hot here recently and it was thhe only car I had with good working AC... but I fixed the Rx's today so... and theres a meet this week so next week FTW... I AM doing a cheap build like gary said, but I DO NOT agree that the ER27 is not a good choice for a turbo... Its compression iis not really that high(9.5:1) and I've seen EA82 "high compression"(9.5:1) turbo cars run a good amount of boost... hell, mike runs 7 psi on his XT with NO intercooler... stock everything, so I'm gonna do it.. and I'll get a dual controller.. 7psi daily, 15 psi race:brow:

carbed EA82, anti-backfire valve also called?
kingbobdole replied to BlindSight's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I cant remember who tought it to Rick, but he was having a Anti back fire/air induction issue... so what they did(at a meet mind you) is to pull the thing apart and stick quarters in the tubes... it seemed to work well and only a 50 cent fix! -
I had no issues with my return line (I've done this to both an 87 ea82 and an ea81) and BTW you can use ANY Fuel injected pump... I have a turbo pump in my wagon

prices for an xt6????
kingbobdole replied to offroadsubaruguy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
at a stealership they are gonna want 2500-3k... thats just too much... you should be able to get into a reallly nice xt6 for under 1500-2k... or a needs some lovin for around a grand... then theres the specials under that... make sure you check for rust, and steering problems... and if its an auto, make sure the trannys tight... Make sure you check for rust in the trunk side pockets. Good luck, XT-6s rock. -
manditory plug: http://www.xt6.net Thank you. Also, thhe sunroof is removable and does fit in the trunk, as far as the pods go, mike or someone on xt6.net will know, but the turbos are slightly different from the 6.... also odds are that you dont have a height control switch(87.5s are strange tho) and the heigh is self controlling. good luck
