  1. The pump is quiet, nothing out of the ordinary. I need to jack it up and turn the wheel side to side several times, right?
  2. It is an automatic. Nothing flashing on the dash upon startup. Funny, wasn't happening until I changed the rack.
  3. Thanks. Put everything together and had it aligned. No leaks. However, I 'm chasing a vibration when I turn the wheel while move at slow speeds. double checked the fluid level and its OK. Wondering if I still have some air trapped in there that can't get out.
  4. Changing the steering rack on my 97' OB Impreza and mixed up these bolts. One of these is for the steering yoke the other is for the front sway bar. I can't remember which is which. The shorter one has a tapered end if that isn't apparent from the picture. They are both 12mm. Thanks
  5. Replacing my steering rack in a 97' Impreza OB. I have it about 90% put back together and just realized I didn't replace the O-rings on screw in lines. Think I already know the answer but am looking for suggestions on whether or not I need to drop the rack again and install new rings. Thanks-
  6. Dealer does not have them. Apparently the dealer replacement core doesn't need them because the pipes do not detach. Can't find them anywhere...
  7. I bought an aftermarket core to replace my original which was leaking. The replacement required the purchase of two (identical) O-rings. When I removed the original core and unscrewed the lines I found that the o-rings are not identical. One is about half the thickness of the other. I contacted the aftermarket dealer to no avail, they list the rings as identical. Wondering if I should go to the dealer for the rings.. Anyone run into this issue before? thx
  8. Well shaft is in... sad to say there is still a grumble/thump when I hit the gas from a stop. Not sure where to go from here.. maybe a junked shaft just for giggles.. thanks for the tips/suggestions everyone!!
  9. The dude at the shaft shop said the 2nd piece was out 25 thousandths. He straightened it and no more vibration. We'll see when I put it back in the car.. I showed him the difference in splines and he told me it was normal, not to worry.
  10. I'm not describing it accurately.. I'll try to post a pic of what I'm talking about.
  11. Not really.... they look 8 years old but can't say there is much if any play now that she's out of the car. I plan to take it to a driveshaft shop and have them asses it. Any comments on the gear differences I mentioned?
  12. Well I just finished pulling the shaft, not as much play as I originally thought. One thing that did catch my eye and I'm hoping someone can tell me if this is normal or not. The geared spling on the driveshaft which slides onto the transmission tail has a keyway, if you will at 12 and 6 o'clock. When I examined the trans tail it is geared all the way round, in other words no keyway. The reason I ask is that my car is a salvage project and I've found on more than one occasion where the wrong part was used as a quick fix. I also noticed some yellow numbers scribed onto the tube of the shaft much like one would see at a junkyard to identify parts. Makes me think this may not be the original shaft and a possibility it's the incorrect shaft. Any suggestions/ideas would be great! Thanks
  13. should there be any play in the shaft? I have about 1 inch play in either direction.
  14. Hi All, I'm hoping you can help me diagnose my 98' Legacy Outback 54K. I get a thump, thump, thump when accelerating from a dead stop. Happens more when I hit the gas hard from a stoplight. If I accelerate slowly, it won't make any noise at all. I replaced the passenger side axel which was suspect, but did not solve the problem. Thump seems to be coming from a little forward of the floorshift. Making me think it's the shaft. I've been under shaking things around, there is some play in there when I rotate the back tires, but not sure if it's too much or normal. Checked the heat shield and it's tight as can be. Any suggestions on how to diagnose? thanks
  15. Hi All, Living in the Phoenix area it doesn't rain often, but last Saturday it rained all day which is newsworthy (first time in 120 days). When I got in my 98 legacy outback the passenger side floor and mat was soaked. I could not find any obvious entry points. The windows were all closed and no water on the dash etc. Any ideas where I can start to look?
  16. After reading the last two replies I decided to call the dealer for some additional details. Momsie left out a few details.. first there is no power to the computer so they cannot asses why the check engine light is always on. Would need to fix power issue then check the codes, right now it won't release any codes. Second they found numerous oil leaks.. front crank seal and head gasket. I asked if they are sure it's the head gasket and not the valve cover? He replied well the tech wrote head gasket.... the $2000 quote was to pull the engine and replace all seals, hence the outrageous cost. I'm sure the cam/crank seals need fixing, but I wonder if the head is really leaking or the is it just the valve covers. Have to check on the 1.8/2.2 issue. About 30K ago I changes the timing belt/water pump and I remember the engine setup just like my 97' 2.2L. I assumed it was the same, but if your saying they are almost identical, it's probably a 1.8L.
  17. I wanted to get some expert opinion on mom's 93 Impreza 2.2L 2wd. She took it in to the dealer for a oil leak and complaining of poor acceleration (128,000 miles). Dealer diagnosed a head gasket blown. She lives about a days drive from me so I'm debating if I should repair it myself or try and find her something else? Dealer is looking for $2000 to fix it. I'm sure I can do it for much less. Trying to find a detailed post for a step by step head gasket replacement but I haven't found a thread dealing with a 2.2 head only the dreaded 2.5's. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!
  18. Matt, thanks for the reply, someone snapped off the bolt in one of my airbox mounting holes. So my box does wobble a bit... didn't think that much of it. I going to pursue it though. I'd be surprised if that much noise could be due to the box.
  19. Hi everyone! I have a 98 Legacy AWD with 45K. She has a loud noise when I reach 60 mph. It's not a grind, more like something vibrating in wind so to say, but it is very noticable. If I let off or press down more on the gas the noise with go away for a few seconds then re-occur. It hasn't affected the performance (yet) but I'm concerned about continued driving like this. I've been under the car and cannot find anything loose (exhaust, underbody, trans, etc) Any ideas you folks have would be appreciated. thanks again!

  21. Hey folks, I hope you can help on a cooling fan issue. When i turn on the a/c my passenger side fan does not engage as it should. It will however turn on if the engine becomes hot enough. Any ideas where i should start troubleshooting? The driver side fan operates fine. thanks
  22. Hey folks I'm new to this forum and was hoping someone might have come across this problem before. My air bag light is on constantly in my 98 legacy outback. I've had this problem before on another car (chrysler) and it turned out to be the clock spring. Any ideas where I can start troubleshooting? I've checked the fuse and it's good... never that easy. thanks
