Well ill tell you one thing, its supposed to be there! I just pulled the same thing off one today, and thinking it has something to with keeping a consistent pressure for the CV axles... -

Hi im interested to see if you have the rear transfer case section of a awd legacy transmission. I broke a piece of when I was pressing out a bearing from the case so as a result I essentially need a the farthest to the back section of the transmission... I got covers and new bearings, etc but i dont want to finish re-assembly until I get a new case for that section... I managed to press out a Snap ring race that holds the bearing in....
