  1. Ivan- the US got brats till 87, and they were still carbed. As for the OP- Are you saying that using starting fluid makes all your problems go away? That could mean fuel delivery issue. But it sounds like you have an issue with your ignition system somewhere. Coils do funky things with temperature fluctuations. Vacuum advance also has a big play on what you're describing.
  2. Good lord... That's insane. I wouldn't have dreamed that a shampooing would have helped that much.
  3. Tons of info here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/110178-offrood-faq/ Some of those guys don't make lifts anymore, but it is still a good read.
  4. Ok, I see the pictures now. Great score. I love the way 30+ year faded red looks.
  5. How kind of you. I would have kept the better one without second thought. Best of luck on your project. Remember to post pictures: we love pictures.
  6. I'm not sure about that one, as my Brats are of the later style. I'd just put a jack stand, wood, brick, or something under there and take them off. That should keep it from moving too much, if any. Be sure to use tons of PB blaster... you will need it by the looks of your brat. Also, what's the story on the silver brat?
  7. Oh, yeah. I've seen your videos on youtube. Did you get the title, yet? Welcome to the forum! You will love it here.
  8. That's a dead giveaway to the ignition coil. They heat up, and die. Be safe and return that one and get another.
  9. PCV should be what's causing the oil buildup in the air cleaner. If the oil is milky, then it's most likely HG. Its also possible that water found its way in some other way.
  10. 1. I bought both my brats in the south. One from Texas, the other from Oklahoma. 2. Neither of mine are lifted (yet). I hear it is not that difficult, though. Un bolt and put the lift blocks in. The part that you have to be creative on is when we get to rear shocks and steering extension. I believe that's the case for a 2 inch. For anything bigger; you may need brake lines lengthened and longer rad hoses. These, of course, all depend on the extremity of the lift size. Find a picture of a Brat you like. We can give you a more detailed list of what is needed if we have a better idea. Do you want an first, or second generation Brat? I don't know it that effects the lift process, or not. Off-road section has tons of pics, and information on this stuff.
  11. That sucks... Those are the ones I live off of.
  12. They're both GL's. Cool, though I didn't know that. I'll see about picking it up. Is there a special module or anything associated with it that it needs to function?
  13. https://www.partingout.com/Listingdetail/4DB59F/1983-Subaru-GL I swear this looks like it has a digital dash... Oh, this guy is parting 2 gl's out, and he ships.
  14. Welcome! We will definitely need some pics. You wont regret owning a Brat.
  15. I have one that's about 20years old. VERY LOUD. Sets off car alarms upon start up. The after-burn before I fixed the EGR sounded like a bomb. Do it, you won't regret it.
  16. That'd be cool, except I need a transmission right now: priorities.
  17. You stole that brushguard. I've trying to get that style for over a year. At one point I was going to pay $200 for one... you're lucky. Glad to hear some updates! Let us know how it goes.
  18. Dude, I had an MR-50 in the back of my Brat. Looks identical to the picture I'm staring at right now... deja vu. Old Hondas are the best. Metallica is also a must for any road voyage.
  19. Yes, the rear disk mod Is bolt in. They generally run ~$150 from what I've seen lately. Post a wanted ad, you should get a response pretty quick. That is a very clean hatch you have; enjoy it! Do not even hesitate on the Weber! It's a wonderful investment that will boost power, and clean up the engine bay. There is also the FI conversion, but that requires a lot of wiring and a few modifications to the distributor. Edit: Here is the FSM http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/--Old%20Models--/1983%20Subaru%20EA81.pdf It is a very big file... Takes forever to navigate and load. I like my hard copy more.
  20. There is no transfer case. Check for stripped hub or broken CV.
