  1. I recently replaced the valve cover gaskets, and what I ordered was for the rear camshaft cover seal. Not yet doing the timing belt, but if I do that I will want to change everything that you mentioned. On the weekend I took the right rear camshaft cover off, but when I couldn't find the seal by itself I just used the grey silicone everyone on here raves about, just a light coating, and put it back together. It's not leaking, but I will put in the correct seal when it comes. I've been overwhelmed with problems on this car, and this is a real minor thing... just to get rid of the leak.
  2. OK. I found a junkyard over near Mt. Joy that has a 98 Outback flood car that is very complete, but was full of water. I have bought some stuff from Ebay, and a few things from Orbach's in Denver. I saw those ads from the guy in York. I like the GT wagons, but they are 2.5, and I like the 2.2 better. Some of those have really nice wheels.
  3. There must be something wrong to use a quart of oil in a week, unless you drove the car across the country.
  4. gregB, that is my local dealer also...I'm just on the other side of it from you. I tried it out, and amazingly it gave me a $0.60 charge to mail them! Most of the other sites like this charged a whole lot... I really don't believe that I could walk in there and buy parts as cheap as I just ordered them. So a BIG THANKS! I will use this in the future if I need new parts. By the way, since you are local, do you sell any used parts or anything?
  5. You don't say that you added oil between last week and "today." Did you add oil? When you check the oil level do you do these things: Have car on level surface. Check after car has been sitting without running for 15 minutes or more. Wipe the dipstick Make sure the dipstick is fully inserted and bottomed out? At this point how do we know that the person who checked it last week or that you yourself did it correctly?
  6. The dealer is about 15 miles away. I haven't bought anything there yet. When I have called it seems like their price is very high or they don't have the item because a 95 car is so OLD.
  7. I have been looking online for these seals, and they only cost about $4, but most of the Subaru parts outfits have shipping that might be $12 minimum or somewhere in that range. Is there anybody out there that will be honest and throw a couple of these in an envelope and charge $2 shipping?
  8. The transmission shop said that the rear seal was blown out. They replaced it. They didn't have much to say about my question about the play. Not really interested in talking shop with a customer. Actually, he had a pretty bad attitude. Well...it's done.
  9. Took this car to the transmission shop, and they said that the rear seal was totally blown out. So they put a new one in. I didn't get any info on the play at the back. They didn't like having talking to me too much.
  10. I don't know about double sunroofs, but having just dealt with this on 2 1995 Legacys, I found on both that the tubes connecting to the pipes on the sunroof structures had aged and expanded. In both cars one tube had even come off the pipe. I put clamps on 4 drain pipe locations (single sunroof) to fix this. You might have junk in the end of the tube, but I would recommend clamping the top, because this vinyl tubing just loosens up as it ages.
  11. Boy do I appreciate you telling me that. This thing has gotten too big in my head, and I appreciate someone with some comments to balance me!
  12. I put an indicator on the driveshaft back there. I can move it about 0.030. I'm not sure if there might be something more than the seal, so I'm going to let a transmission shop look at it.
  13. I put an indicator on the driveshaft back there. I can move it about 0.030. I'm not sure if there might be something more than the seal, so I'm going to let a transmission shop look at it.
  14. It's a 95 Subaru Legacy LSi. Dark Blue with gold front bumper which was replaced after an accident. Has leather interior. Mileage is about 165,000. Automatic. Since my last post someone on the other thread says that I don't have to take the rear housing off...
  15. Thanks very much for that illustration. The Haynes manual doesn't have any transmission illustrations like that. Pretty weak in that area. The Subaru mechanic mentioned grabbing the driveshaft to see how much play is in it. I did that, and I would say that there is a little play, but without a dial indicator, my guess is that the amount is very small. Maybe I can rig a dial indicator on there later and measure it. I do have one. I didn't know that the dust cover came off. That's good to know. If what you say is right, then there is some light coming here.... I have an appointment at my mechanic (not the Subaru guy, he is too far away) and he can handle this fine. Thanks for that help. I'd much rather invest $100 than $350. Oh, if I took a picture it would just show fluid leaking out the dust cover at the rear... just running out.
  16. Since that back housing has to come off, local Subaru guy quotes $350, including replacing the back housing if it somehow is bad (?) Before I realized the back housing had to come off, I was going to have my general mechanic do it. That would have been only $45/hr. This car has been such a headache, that I'm toying with just putting it on Craigslist AS-IS and letting it go. I just bought my daughter another one, and it seems to be in good shape.
  17. Local Subaru mechanic says that the rear housing needs to come off, and that if there is too much movement in the driveshaft that there might be something worn (?) back there that might require replacement of that housing. It is leaking with the car just sitting and the motor running, that's why he came up with this hypothesis.
  18. Local Subaru mechanic say that the whole rear trans housing has to be replaced. Says that the bearing comes out from the INSIDE. He also mentioned something about wear that might cause me to need that rear housing replaced....if the drive shaft moves too much. So it's out of the "easy" category for me.
  19. Original poster never mentioned how the battery was tested. Most of the auto parts stores will do a cycle test for free now.
  20. Just checked this. Had wife start car while I watched the back end of the trans. After 10-15 seconds fluid started flowing out of the back of the trans at the driveshaft. So, if I replace the rear seal, will it fix this?
  21. I'm in Leola, PA, just east of Lancaster PA. If anybody is in this area, I'd be glad to have them look at it. If I get enough reassurance that this is just the back oil seal, I will take it to my local guy to get it replaced. So can overfilling the differential somehow blow out the back seal?
