samneric replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Woot! - sweet looking louvres The whole car is sexy - I'm jealous, wish my Brat still looked like that What is Clay Bar by the way? Some kind of block for rubbing the surface blemishes off? Steve -
Will do! I always wanted a Sierra Cosworth growing up :headbang: Steve

HELP with axles PLEASE!! :)
samneric replied to audio_file's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
And if that doesn't work, you've always got your BFG Maybe my mis-spent youth is showing through a little today... I had the same problem with a recon cv axle on my Brat. I had to switch it out to the other side of the car and they fit well enough. I had to pull the axle off and try to shove the cv shaft in from the outside of the hub to prove it wasn't going to work. My next option was going to be using emry paper to clean up the surface of the shaft and then re-lube it with grease to see if I could have gotten it in. Steve -
Is that a Ford Sierra with a Brat backend ?!?!? More pics!!! Steve

IT's WORKING   I was on the compression stroke - just had to advance the rotor by one tooth... It kinda looks like its gone past the #1 pick up but that's something I know now. Thanks GD, Ferox, Jonas I'm over the moon now Steve

Sure, I know what you are saying - I was justing giving you the only facts about the disc I had... But guess what????? Turns out you are 110% correct - my old disc's splines have a smaller diameter than the alignment tool in the kit they sent me.... Everyone stay away from this part number at PartsAmerica if you want an 85 Brat clutch kit: NU31144 - Fenco Clutch Kit - 1985 Subaru Brat GL H4 1.8 1781 5 2BBL Whoops - maybe the 5 in the name means 5 speed ? ! ? Anyway, my other problem (engine misfiring) has been fixed - just got to wait on my real OEM clutch set now :headbang: :headbang: Go on then.... Steve
-
Cheers! Will give that a go. I just disconnect the HT lead from the coil to disable the ignition. Steve
-
No, I'm not sure - esp considering the replacement t/o bearing housing in the kit had a bigger diameter hole (not to mention the crappy plastic insert).... http://www.alonzostreet.com/steve/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=553 I checked the packing slip on the kit and it said '85 Brat 1800 blah blah... I didn't check the disk on the tranny shaft though Anyways, after advice on the board, I've since looked into a centerforce clutch (not produced anymore according to sales rep) and OEM from 1stsubaru parts. Just to make sure, I ordered a new flywheel, disk, plate, lever and springs. I need to double check the fitting of those springs because they seemed scarily loose when I connected the lever to the t/o housing.... Steve

Ok, so maybe I'm naive here but how do I know its the compression stroke? Do I need to hook up my compression tester, rotate the engine until it shows the compression or is there an easier way??? I assumed that with the flywheel at 0 degrees and the #1 piston at the TDC, that was the compression stroke. Could it also be the exhaust stroke with the piston at TDC and the flywheel at 0? Not sure on the type of dissy - I have pics here: http://www.alonzostreet.com/steve/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=542 I didn't match the punch mark on the dissy shaft to anything on the casing - I haven't read about that in the threads i've searched - I will look into that. I have a total of three dissys - the one that is on now seems to be the newest with no play in the bearings and clean components in the top. I know the book says the flywheel can only go on one way - I'm assuming that is correct. Steve

Ok, I have decided to tackle my engine issues one step at a time... I have my rotor pointing at #1 pickup when the flywheel is at 0. I took out the plug and made sure the piston was at TDC. When I crank the engine and if it starts, my timing gun (induction on #1 lead) fires at a whole in the flywheel (no numbers to be seen). Could this be caused by bad leads, or a bad coil or a bad stator in the dissy? Steve

Woops, spoke to early It was wierd again after I started it after a shower. I changed the carb this time. Still wierd. I checked the rotor arm again and it was out by 1 tooth again. It appears to jump teeth like a kangaroo with bad dentures. The clutch is also screwed. The cable is at the end of its tension and it makes a wierd sound when I press it to the floor. Serves me right for buying cheap crap. Saw an SVX on ebay that is taking my fancy Steve

Thanks for the tip, it pointed me in the right direction.... The dissy appeared to be off by a tooth so I adjusted it and tried again. Still was being awkward. Decided to swap in a spare dissy I had being given with the car - cleaned it up and put it in place. Hurrah!!!!!!! It stays running with it slighty advanced...  Glad to have it back on the road again after nearly two months down time. Still shoots a hole in the flywheel but I will try again when it is dark to get a better timing look. Steve

Hey all, Finally got my Brat back together and on the ground. Final tasks that were completed: New clutch (cheapo $149 dynopak) New clutch release bearing (pressed old one off housing) New headgaskets/oil seals Nice shine on motor Nice clean pistons and heads after carbon buildup removed New front driveaxles from CVShafts.com New front strut tower mounts (old rubber completely sheared) Lots of TLC Went to spark her up after finally getting it back on the ground yesturday. Took a few seconds to get the gas to the carb then it started with foot on peddle. Pressing the peddle didn't rev engine :-\ First thing I tried was check the timing - seemed to flash on a hole in the flywheel :-\ Got flywheel to TDC on #1 by aligning the mark on "0". The rotor was pointing slightly advanced of the #1 pickup in dissy cap. It seems to be set up correctly... I didn't take the dissy off the engine while cleaning it but did rotate the crank to clean the pistons. Is there a chance the dissy could get missaligned or be out by 360 degrees? Looking for first impressions before I get back to more troubleshooting... I'm gonna do compression checks this afternoon. Steve

Is there any aftermarket source for either the solenoid or vacuum kicker? Steve

EA81 200k Service Photo Montage
samneric replied to samneric's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sure, Salt'll sure do it to ya... My red Brat came from the keys and the frame is rotten underneath... I must admit - I get carried away when servicing an engine - I always have to clean every bit of rust off it and get it looking as new as possible - even though it sits there under the hood all day long and gathers dirt. I painted the block and heads of my GMC sierra in Chevy Orange - very sexy Steve -
I'm not sure about EA71 but on my EA81 Brat, there is a vacuum driven actuator that pulls on the carb throttle lever when the A/C solenoid lets vacuum to it. Mine is broken and past attempts to get one didn't lead anywhere - I'm still in search of a replacement..... Have mu idle speed set higher to compensate at the mo. Problem is that Subaru never fitted A/C in the factory during the early days... A/C was added at the dealer and could come from a number of manufacturers - Mine happens to be Hitachi. Steve

That definately qualifies as "La Photo Del Dia"... Or should it not be "¿¿¿¿¿El PhotO Del Dia?????" Anyways, this is my contribution to bent suspension parts after hitting a curb in my WRX.... http://www.alonzostreet.com/steve/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=501 http://www.alonzostreet.com/steve/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=505 Steve
