OK, I have read other posts here about keeping tire sizes the same on awd and it seems none are conclusive...........The car I bought was actually a 1993 instead of a 1992 Legacy wagon with 223000 miles..The car is a FIVE SPEED and It runs GREAT. Only a few issues... 1) Park brake button is GONE ... 2)Both rear tires are gone on the inside they may have been rotated from the front? Do I need to replace ALL four tires at the same time? 3)Right rear brake is scrubbing(probly just needs a brake job, rotor is a little rusty) 4)Driver shoulder belt thing does not move in the track. How or where do I fix the seat belt thing ? 5) Shifter needs bushings....Where to buy them? Thats all I can think of now..Any responses are GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks in advance

Hey all ! My old reliable 84 GL wagon w/manual steering that I JUST got going started steering hard , so I jacked up the front end and when turning the wheel lock to lock, I hear Crunch Crunch Crunch.................................. Can I grease it? or replace it with newer? what will fit? If I can replace it, Can I use a power rack or does it need to be a manual rack? I really do not want to make it power steering unless I have to... Thanks for any input

Hello all !! , I am VERY familiar with my 85 wagon with the EA 82, inside and out.Now my 18 year old daughter has a friend at work offering her a 92 Legacy all wheel drive wagon , with a manual transmission for$1000. I believe this one has the EJ engine, I am not sure what the typical problem areas are with this engine. It does have 223,000 miles, new timing belt and water pump and I believe one new axle...............I LOVE MY EA 82!! and hope this EJ is just as reliable.......... Thank you for any responses or advice!!

Stripped exhaust stud *UPDATE*
subarusaver replied to loyale1993's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
WISH I would have asked that question.............This place is like GOOGLE for Subaru's!!!! I used the opposing holes in the head on my ea 82 and had to have my exhaust cut and welded to match(I was getting new exhaust anyway) but it sucks now to get to that one nut!!! I LOVE USMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
It's pretty easy to take the lifters ALL the way apart and THEN clean all the tiny checkballs and springs(I used a gallon bucket of gunk carb cleaner ,the one with the basket in it) , re assemble and pump up(my chilton said they should only have 4-5 mm play, but mine had ALOT more than that and they are fine). Also on the oil pump do take it ALL the way apart at this time!! they are pretty hard to find as best I can tell, so while you have the opportunity, make it like new!! you will not regret it .I did these exact things on my donor EA 82 which came from a clean looking 89 with 60,000 miles, except the oil looked like sludge ,apparently the tranny was out ... now , it runs too quiet to hear ANY lifter noise!!!!!!!! Good luck!!

My 84 GL wagon which I have been calling an 85 GL-10 for YEARS now just made it to 262,300 when I decided to do a head gasket and found a cracked block.......now she has a 60,000 mile practically brand new heart!!!!!!!!RUNS LIKE NEW !!! -
I am Looking for advice on Where to purchase a Weber carb for my ea82 to replace my Hitachi carb.My car is an 85 GL-10 with a 60,000 mile EA 82 from an 89 dl with my old intake and disty. ALSO..... Will I need a fuel pressure regulator? Is there a fuel return line hookup? If not, what to do with the current return line? Are there better adapter plates with different vendors? Is it worth it to look for a used weber and rebuild it?

thanks, but I need one for a carb.

OKAY, I knew my intake was a little warped when I put it on,so I used two gaskets on each side and Indian Head shellac............AND.............IT leaked....I have decided to fix it,so I took it off and have two options since I cant find one anywhere (My local Knoxville Tn Pull a part has none for a long time now)...Option 1) : buy a piece of granite or marble and glue sandpaper to it and SELF MILL it ...OR Option 2) MACHINE SHOP....AND THEY ARE Pricey......so far 70-120 $... Any Ideas? Anyone have one to sell ? It's not warped ALOT in my opinion, but it does rock front to back on a flat surface... I just want it to be right and NOT LEAK.. THANKS FOR ANY HELP
-
The ring around the lifter is a stop ring (as I understand it) You do need to pry the cap off the lifter.A small screwdriver works really good, go around a little bit at a time until you get it loose.I will attempt to post a picture here of a disassembled lifter.Hope this helps.
-
Just in case you are interested, It is possible to disassemble the old lifters ALL THE WAY and clean them good , re assemble them and re install them. I did that recently with an entire set of lifters on my ea 82 along with the oil pump re seal, and the engine is quiet as a mouse...Hope that helps..

help with ea 82 heater control head please
subarusaver replied to subarusaver's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the input. My fan speed switch has no problems,it works on ALL FOUR speeds perfectly.the blower works EVERY time I short the blower relay,so the blower motor is fine. The DEFECTIVE part in question is the heater control head.It contains electrical AND vacuum parts inside of it.The control head sends a signal or makes the connection for the blower to turn on....IT is NOT sending any signal out.I have removed it from the dash(that was a pain)and disassembled it close to all the way apart,I am a little scared at this point because if I break it , I'm screwed...................ANY Parts or help Greatly appreciated..... -
O.K. , I've read all the posts I can find on here( feel free to direct me to one I've missed), and none seem to cover my issue...I have a 1985 Gl-10 Wagon 4wd dual range 5 speed w/a1.8 EA82 from an 89 dl,carb'd. My problem is with the heater control head, there is apparently a short internally. I checked the relay, it is fine.I can hold the relay in my left hand and tap on the control unit with a screwdriver and feel the relay click and sometimes turn on..It works fine when the weather is warm, but when I need it most, like below 32°f it will not work.I may have to use a jumper in place of the relay, but would rather fix the problem so it works correctly..............Anyone have an idea or parts? Thanks...

Is There any chance you could post a picture possibly with some instruction? to identify the different parts.? Thanks

Hi Tom ,I noticed when I had my exhaust fixed(New pipes ALL the way and new muffler no cat) I asked for quiet, and you really cant hear it run,but I got curious and slipped the new muffler off and WOW! what a difference in power!! would it be safe to run straight pipes or is there a better muffler to get? I'm not really sure what kind the exhaust guy put on, but it's REAL quiet. Thanks

EA 82 stumbles bad after 3000 rpm under load
subarusaver replied to subarusaver's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
WELL, I have to admit, I REALLY thought I had that part all tied up.....the last time(on the previous engine) I had a severe issue with it,two gaskets and Indian head gasket shellac fixed it ..for ever ,,or so I thought.....figured this time would be the same............obviously not..I guess I need to stress here I am learning to ALWAYS CHECK THE BASICS.Too many times I have been a "parts changer". This has been a GREAT learning experience for me and I owe a BIG THANKS to ALL contributors and USMB!!!! THANK YOU ALL!! -
Hey Dave I need one fixed also!! Any chance of a how to video for this? That seems to be a little too high tech for me......... Thanks

EA 82 stumbles bad after 3000 rpm under load
subarusaver replied to subarusaver's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It did actually hit, I noticed that when I put it on,so I took some blue painters' tape and applied it to the crankcase, then rubbed the intake around a bit to mark the high spot on the tape.I then took a 12" flat file and filed the seam of the crank case down enough for clearance. When I put the intake on without gaskets, it would rock in a front to back motion probably .015-.025 If I was guessing.I wanted to get REAL Subaru Gaskets, but the Dealer didn't have any and suggested Fel Pro which is what I used.My closest Machine shop said it would probably require a c&c to flatten it out(which he does not have) so....I will probably re do it when I get a chance. It is running pretty good for now. Thanks for the input... -
EA 82 stumbles bad after 3000 rpm under load
subarusaver replied to subarusaver's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Finally figured out MOST of the problem...I adjusted the timing to 18* ,then ..Thanks to a can of starting fluid,I found my intake gaskets are leaking!! I know my intake is a little warped,so I used TWO gaskets on each side and Indian Head Gasket Shellac all around each gasket. I also anti seized the bolts and went by the Chilton for torque specs...........So when I put a wrench to them today, I got about a full turn on each bolt. After that NO Stumbling after 3000 rpms....Probably going to re do the gaskets and TORQUE the crap out of the bolts next time. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!! -

This Dizzy is driving me crazy!
subarusaver replied to ScottyBigs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
May be a long shot, But I had an 83 Dodge van once and it Honestly melted 13 regulators and ruined 14 alternators!! Poor parts guy must have really liked me.........I was ALOT younger then, and there was no internet to search.... Finally went to an Old guy( Love Old Guys' experience) He told me "It's not grounded properly".............Five bucks and a ground strap fixed my agonizing issue!! Possibly a bad ground, maybe rusted connection?? Body must be grounded to engine, frame, etc. Good Luck!! -
UMM oops! Guess I should have done just a tad more research............maybe since it is VACUUM operated very few fumes will get to it?It looks like I may end up replacing the disty anyway..that was a last ditch effort............
