EA 82 stumbles bad after 3000 rpm under load
subarusaver replied to subarusaver's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The Distributor vacuum connects to a hard line that I traced beneath the intake and to the front left of the carb. I hooked a line to the port on the right center top port on the Hitachi. There are two similar ports in the top center of the carb,I did not hook it to the bowl vent...Thanks -

HI, I had to short mine,or jump it out as well , because the sending unit is bad.You can find them on Rockauto pretty cheap (1985 SUBARU GL-10 1.8L H4 : Cooling System : Temperature Sender / Sensor) This is where I found mine. The Sender is located in the Left side close to the bottom of the radiator if you are facing the headlights, it just screws into the radiator. You may want to check or just change the thermostat as they are really easy to get to.If no heat still...,IT may be a clogged heater core , or one of those vacuum controlled flappers that directs air flow across the heater core........Good Luck

EA 82 stumbles bad after 3000 rpm under load

Hi Dave T, Plugs are Brand New NGK gapped at .039 per Chilton. wires are fairly new and working well. Just pumped all the old gas out (it was kind of orange) and installed new fuel line AND new Wix fuel filter so the newly rebuilt carb would not get any crap in it..As for the fuel pump, it's really quick, it took only a couple seconds to fill the new filter, and the filter stays completely full. The exhaust system has been recently re done - no catalytic converter-new muffler, new pipes all the way back. Thanks for the response...........hope this helps -
Hello all !!, My Car Is a 1985 GL 10 wagon 5 speed dual range 4wd with the HITACHI CARB After finding a 57000 mile ea 82 with good compression,I got it to replace my 262k with a broken block. I took it all apart, NO cracks between the valves!!. Took heads for resurface and valve job/seals, cleaned and re sealed oil pump and disassembled all lifters, cleaned re assembled, and pumped up. Put all new gaskets on re assemble.I had to use my old 2 wire distributor(see post )(HELP! 2 wire distributor). I ended up rebuilding the vacuum advance.MY PROBLEM IS the engine now stumbles HARD after 3000 rpms under any load. The engine will idle around 800,and rev up pretty good with no load, but shakes a little at idle, and it seems to "bind" a little when cranking, the timing is 8*btdc. I do not know whether to blame vacuum or distributor??I have re built the carb and cleaned it out real good. I used Indian head gasket sealer(it was old,but looked fine, it was liquid like new) for the intake gaskets and the carb base gaskets and spacer. As for the distributor,I COMPLETELY disassembled it to clean it and free up the advance plate.I did notice some wear from the counter weights on the inside of the disty housing, but it did not have any wobble or play I could feel.I have deleted the egr since this ea82 (1989) has no place on heads for it,and plugged the lines I cant figure out.I do not want to spend 250$ for a new disty if that is not the problem....How do I diagnose the issues? Do I need a vacuum gauge? I'm stuck................Any help is GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks for looking..............And I still have some extra parts I cant use from this '89 model.....1)Optical 4 wire disty w/cap ..1) intake for throttle body injection ..1) throttle body carb? injector ..1) Power steering pump.

Just a note to all. I contacted Philbin Group, real nice people,I just dont have the extra cash to get the disty rebuilt right now. So since I am a diy kind of person, I rebuilt the vacuum advance myself... took about forty minutes,I used rubber roofing for the diaphragm and was able to tap the piston shaft for a 24 tpi machine screw, it worked perfectly!!! Thanks for all the advice!!

I have an 85 GL 10 which started overheating bad late last year.Pulled the engine to find after 262,000 miles, I had managed to crack the block at the center head bolt....I finally found a 57000 mile EA 82 from an 89 DL which looked REAL Clean. Now I am looking at it's four wire disty and from what I can tell I have no choice but to use my old disty in this engine. So I took my old disty out and began cleaning/inspecting it. The counter balances have rubbed the side of it pretty bad and the vacuum advance was stuck bad.I've got the advance moving again, but the diaphram still leaks some which will cause trouble I'm sure..Any Ideas on best resolution to the problem? Will these distys' interchange ? does anyone have a spare for parts? The springs in it are shot also....Any help is Greatly appreciated..Btw I think it is the Hitachi disty..its black with snap clips for the cap..

Just my experience...My 82 gl used to have a backfire (ehaust only) that would come and go, pretty bad at times until ONE DAY .Finally it quit and would not start back..took it to my Subaru mechanic and there was basically a HOLE the size of a quarter in the intake....Where the a/c bolts on to the intake, (apparently it had been OVERTORQUED) ,the threads in the intake had broken about 1 1/4 "diameter hole and air was sucking around the whole perimeter of it....So now , if I get backfiring , I check vacuum first..Good Luck!!

can't find an EA 82 oil pump?1985 GL 10
subarusaver replied to subarusaver's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for all the QUICK replies!!!! Grossgary, sorry they don't have one.I got excited when I saw it, but, a phone call and three minutes later "Chris" told me "Sorry, we dont have that item any more,BUT ,I can get you one for 179.00..........Oh well, Looks like I just have to re seal if I cant find one.............. Thanks again!! -
1985 GL 10 only 252,000 miles !!! I LOVE MY SUBARU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Clean 10-30 castrol/a little lucas to help, and a Purolator oil filter....Starts GREAT!! not much compression left though.Still runs great... NOW, I think i need an oil pump for my subie, It's been sittin for a good while now because the lifters started ticking...they fade in and out at various rpms. For instance, at 2000 rpms, they get quiet for a minute, then start to tick again, then get quiet........I purchased the gaskets for the oil pump from Subaru for about $20. pretty cheap...The oil pump WAS available for $131. until I got the $ this month, then they ALL dissapeared from the face of the earth!! Subaru has one I can get for $175. TOO MUCH!!!! Can I just re-seal the existing pump? is it time to save for a re-man engine? Thanks in advance!!
