anuther comen problem on the end of the main shaft is a large 34 mm nut that holds the gears to the shaft it likes to come loose and alows the gears to move need to take off awd and tail shaft retiten the nut and should be fixed should be done before nut falls off and gets chewed up this is not a hard fix unless awd is damaged. Should check the end play of input shaft at same time -
The 2.2 i just did the timing belt was a bitt tight had to grind a tiny bitt off end of addjuster to get it in i used 2.2 b gaskets with phase 2 heads. In the offroad subies I do we mix and match alot but you must have an eye for deatails one differance thats overlooked and its toast. And i cant say thiss enuff CHANGE THE ROD BERRINGS thiss is any subaru moters weakest link and when they fail the whole moter fails.

I can hear the bad ones when they start cold if it is knocky for more than 1 second when it starts rod berrings are done the key is to time the oil light how long it takes to turn off when starting engine a new engine makes no sounds when starting and oil light is off before it starts. Any knocking on startup is a problem [not piston slap rod knocking ] till it makes oil preshure theese moters give lots of warning before they go you just have to talk to it.
