I had one with a smeared thrust berring there no way you could have known without tearing it down was no play just smeared it whould have failed was low miles 2.2 bore was nice clean engine even ran good probly good comp.Someone had had clutch problems you just never know i reberring everyone of theese engines if any ? its realy hard to know if its realy good or not when 90% of the failures are what you cant see.
  2. yes but he has heads already i like the 2.2 heads but he could save money buy just buying short block and skip the check engine light delemia and he dosent need a intake ect its ok none agrees with me anyway lol
  3. The delay is caused by bad orings on input shaft where it seals to touque converter easaly damaged if engines been out
  4. Im not going to talk about tourque specs but that bolt can go very tight and should be iv'e been trying to break one by overtightening it no luck yet i get alot of damaged front crank pullys always from being to loose have not seen many that seperated mabee 3

New car have the abillaty to learn it moniters your driveing and tunes itself acordingly probly dident understand the change in driving and ran some different maps to try and tune itself or your defrost was on or fans turned on did it check engine light ? bad gas ? did it corect itself or still doing it ?
  6. # 1#2 rod ? or coged idler pully on timing belt put a manual gague on it and check oil prehure min 10 psi hot at idle should be 15-25 hot at idle if below thiss needs berrings. I whould sugest geting a 2.2 short block and put your heads on it 2.5s had weak bottom ends.
  7. Those glass fuses are a pain my 80 brat had 3 that looked good but were broke on the ends and the fuse box likes to corrode. I have a 81 80 and 77 brat here if you need me to look at anything. Mine was having problem with main fusable link power comes in one side of link and out the other mine was burt were it gos to power car ditch the aluiminum power cable to starter will help to add some more grounds and check the power wire on alt also there are some inline fuses under right side of dash
  8. have tons but need to know grey or black what tip design i think there are 3 different ones do you just need a set or a specific set ?

  9. Change key pully and put it tight if you put a pry bar in flex plate holes you can hold crank and tourque front bolt sounds like its wrecked the hole in pully very commen i gentaly tap on end of crank to mushroom it slightly to get pully to fit tight agian.
  10. Whens the bachlor party ? any new projects ? just started working on the 77 red brat im done the 80 brat looks like new came out realy good. Do you have a use for 04 wrx 2.0 heads have a good set came off knocker but compleate with covers and cam gears ext cheers.

  11. Worth nothing ? i buy evry 2.2 i can get gold i say the best and cheapest moter to rebiuld i put that block in everything. The parts are not to pricey and the end result is good get a used one is good to but you realy dont know if the berrings or rings are poor and you dont lean anything. At least if you rebiuld it you know. I tore apart a ej 2.5 with 100000kms on it yesterday totaly buggerd rod berrings how could you tell the state of berrings in used moter russian rulette. Im not saying spend a ton of money on it but a rering and reberring shouldent cost to mutch mabee 350 $ and some time. And can update the block half sealing rings to dubble lip rings as theese engines had problems with block sealing rings. I do not trust used engines just for cores i whould go thrugh evryone before running it .
  12. No its for real just finished runing it up pulls good the nurled pisstons make it tight though needs lots of breakin time no piston slap thats for shure. I will be doing thiss swap alot as 2.5 phase 2 moters get harder to find. At least i can sell it with some reliabilaty. The 2.5 heads fitt the 91 block fine other than some small headgasket mods. Ask me what ej parts interchange with other ej parts i have a list. After my 200th ej engine rebiuld i started to mix and match a bitt i have so many moter parts that is easy to look at interchangabilaty and i have a planer so i can custom set the deck hights and head hights / comp ratios i do subaru moters all day every day. Todays engine is a 2.5 d bored .50 over with a 2.2 crank and 2.5 sti pistons and rods with lowerd deck hight with 2.2 heads reground cams going na into a 87 chaser with 5 speed high low. Customer whanted low compretion to be able to run low octane gas but still make toruqe
  13. i modd them up a bitt you can put ea82 turbo rods and pistons in it helps alot. Use a soilid lifter block the one with extra two head bolts. Theese engines will rev higher than the hydroilic ones you can also use a 2.0 ej piston but have to remove the piston pin bushing. I also like to put the ea82 tbi onto them if has turbo pistons can go tbi turbo thiss works well to but is diffacult to set up my 81 brat is tbi with full deul exhaust pulls about 40% better than my 80 brat with ea 71 dont use the 1600 pistons they have weak ring lands and break when pushed above 7000rpm use a piston that has the thin ring on top ring theese are alot stronger and hard to break i have some ea 81 parts still mostly crank and rod assemblys i save them for airplane guys

  14. Have a customer whos getting me to put a xt6 engine in 77 brat if that will fitt any engine will fitt

Howbout a 91 2.2 short block in a 2004 impreza 2.5 hole heads bolted right up little headgasket mod and timming belt modds runs perfectly and short block was 1000$ cheaper than 2.5 i can find 2.2s with good cranks but 2.5 phase 2 is hard to find and weak. I can ofer thiss engine cheaper and with more reliability.
  16. pull pistons and re ring em probly got a scratched up bore on the side thats burning oil unfortanatly the only way to fix is a good hone job and rings or bore it over. Have fought thiss before is losing battle the more oil it burns the worse it will get. Till it burns a valve because of the extra carbon in cly

Push rods are not the same but shouldent matter the oil feed for rocker shafts is restricted on hydrolic moter not on soilid one and the piston is a pin ring design better piston on hydro moter soilid will rev better did you know that 2.0 ej pistons will go into that block ? and can use ea 82 turbo rods biger berring and stronger rod. From my exp the best ea81 s where the oldest ones i could get 80-81 with the extra 2 head bolts small ones with newer parts in them

I test the head gasket by putting shop air into cly one at time with cly at tdc i use a blow gun with hose to cly and put 120 psi in to cly and c if any bubbles in rad if bubbles head gasket on that cly if no bubbles then rad or fan switch. Ea 81 s were bad for heads coming loose mabee a retourque of heads may help or just change gaskets anyway good time to inspect rest of moter anyway
  19. There is a nuetral position switch for pushbutton but not for d/r shouldent make any diff
  20. She go's for inspection today what a bugger trying to get a usa car registerd in canada been on thiss car for a while totaly restored just need to get it inspected and i'm done. Then i can aply for colector plates
  21. The clock has a resister to drop voltage when lights are on thiss gets hot and melts its soder and makes a bad conection take clock out take apart re soder the large resistor back in and it should work i fix theese alot
  22. Buy a noid light and check injetor pulse you can buy a noid light set at princess auto for 25 bucks sounds like injector ground to me
  23. We cut down the loyale rear diff holder to fit early cars or just weld the loyale ends on yours
  24. Check the trans strut brace and trans mounts the go bad alot and high tourque moter hard on mounts
