Check alt output cant be more than 14.20 anymore will burnup mods alts like to overcharge on theese years seen them go as high as 20 volts check it about 3000 rpms evrything off

Never see problem with dash always the senser on trans has a reluctor wheel on it it whears funny and make speedo jump and quit and mess around .Seems to happen on standards and auto cars but changing the speed sensor has always fixed any iv'e come across. Even high mile cars 400000km or better never seen a failed speedomiter head. I have seen the screws come loose on the back of cluster but very rare.

I have some ? are they the same as ea 81 ether way i have some think i have 5 or 6 of those engines. Did they bend ? i have one that sat and valves were sticky and bent pushrods when tryd to start.

Pull engine it takes me 25 minutues to pull at my shop but you dont have to fight axles or ball joints.just exhaust two mount bolts 4 bell housing two strut brace feul lines diss rad ect. is way better to pull engine is a good time to fix any leaks it may have. -
they have a week bottom end in engine i put new rod berrings main berrings and oil pump on evry justy i see. That seems to keep them going for a while. I drive a ectv justy works very well. The tranys are weak but i havent been able to break mine yet. And i have been trying but holds up

Check coged idler pully on timing belt -
I do the awd clutch pack all the time i identify the problem by puting car on steep gravel hill giver and see if spins rear>does it work instantly if yes than ok if not at all soiliniond or clutch pack if slow to come on clutch pack if shudders clutch pack try going for a 20 km drive with fwd fuse in thiss will flushout the awd circut may help my first step to diagnosis.

I have 40 crank and rod asemblys for ea81s hung onto them for airplane guys if you need one all good all std size.

Commen to be loose on splines i put a oring between the cv and the trans to slow down the loosenes.

We found that if you put in the fwd fuse put it in fwd drive it 20 kms or better thiss will hold the awd soiliniod open and flush any crap that may be pluging it out. If this dosent work change the clutch pack and soliniod can be done with trany in car takes me about an hour to change clutch pack. Thiss is very commen problem caused by having diferent size tires or low tires or abuse.

Doing that exact job today headgaskets in a 04 impreza 2.5 uses two half gasket sets. Timing belt water pump coged idler pully plugs fliuds. Customer bought own parts cost 800$ my labour is 12 hours + 150 plane heads my bill is around 1200-1500 depending on extras. Two day turnaround time started 9yesterday done 12 today. I cant figure out why the dealer dosent change the water pump or idlers its just silly not to.The last 3 cars i did heads on all 04 's all 156000-160000 kms the head gaskets seem particulary bad on thiss year

I have one of those engines out here used it for race car had 380000kms on it origanal chain. had to change one piston had to undo over 165 bolts to get to it was crazy. But i did have it apart and know that engine and i have two cores with good heads. One with broken pistons one over heated both run still.I could see the timing chain skiping but not breaking i ran that moter at 8000 rpm with turbo no timing problems.I whould pull out one of the cam sensers and look to see if the cam is turning.

Their is a late model ea71 that came out in 79 - 81 that had no stainless inserts in ex ports did it have ports for air injection ? probly a late model ea71 head. The late model one makes a bitt more power and has a one piece intake and water pump bolts to block.

Had one that evrytime you came off hyway and hit brakes it stalled. It was sticking in lockup tourque whould not relese and as soon as you started car was ok. The lady had spent alot of money trying to fix it she had changed the ecu tps tune up o2 ect. It was a loose ground on the right side of intake where the main trans and engine ground go to intake. was left loose when dealer did headgaskets. Think if soiliniod looses ground it stays on till car is shut off.

Check headlight realys their is on for left and one for right work both high and low just to left of stering coullum they all clip together to a plastic bracket. If the terminals on the realy have changed coulor it may be burnt. Or try subing in a different headlight switch.

The coil mount braket grounds the ignition mod make shure thiss is bare meatal and grounded very good i run an extra ground from batt - to coil bracket
