Its always the head gasket 250 headgaskets later have seen every kind of diagnosis " its not the headgasket " over and over its always the headgasket. Any bubbles in rad is headgasket the comp slips past the fire ring and putts 180 psi up agianst 12 psi putting combustion into rad over preshureing rad and pushes all coolant into overflow. no piont doing anything but the headgaskets. Have had this senario 3 times this week 98 outback 01 outback and 96 out back all headgaskets.

If hlas were removed they pump up to max height so when reinstalled the valves dont close is very commen for it to only run on 2 till it warms up and lifters can bleed down and valves close again have had it take 30 min or more. when i have lifters out i pump them down so the have to addjust is better ticking than missing. I bett you just dident give it enuff time or timing is out -

I use a ball hone on slow speed lubed with 10-30 oil is very important to go up and down consistantly and smoothly and try not to stay at top of cly to mutch as they wear tapered so more honing at bottom of cly than top. I also putt a old gasket on top of block to protect it from scraches

Use sprokets from car BUT the twin cam 2.5 has plastic cam gear this will not work on 2.2 you may have to locate a 2.2 cam gear to match the car. How many bumps on your cam sproket ? -
