  1. I recently converted to weber...and my distributor vacuum can has two ports. One is on the outside, and one on the top. I know at least one of them goes to the carb, and there is a provision for that on the weber. Which is hooked to the carb itself, and where does the other one go to???? thanks for the help
  2. For that price, I'd jump on it and put a 5spd dual range in it. It sounds like it's in great condition. Any photos?
  3. I'd buy it for the body, but I hate automatics.
  4. stay tuned for my progress as this beast gets back on the road. The motor you hear was on a shelf for about 25 years.
  5. I've heard of oil in the coolant, water in the oil, but gas in the coolant? Has it been overheating?
  6. This is my old 81 wagon. I don't have it any more but I loved it. I had it for a long time, and the po had bought it from a junk yard before I had it. It had stickers from Colorado, a cape cod mass beach permit, and a mexican tourist visa sticker on the windshield. It lived quite a life. Sadly last fall it was just to far gone to really put back on the road as it had sat for about 10 years behind my mothers house as I was busy going to college and growing up, bla bla bla. Here is how it sat. And here it is about 10 minutes later after I stuck a battery in it. It drove itself out after 10 years. I couldn't believe it. Broke my heart to junk it. But there was really nothing left to the underside.
  7. Thanks for the reply. That helps a lot. I'll look into it.
  8. So, I'll try to keep this short. I just put a new ea71 in my 78 brat. I have the fuji manual from 78 and the chiltons, with wiring diagrams, but I am no electrical engineer. I have no power to the coil. The large starter wire has power, but not the little wire off the soloniod with the ignition on. The coil has nothing on the + or - side of the coil. I tried a jumper to the + side of the coil, and still no spark.....any suggestions????? This car was running before the motor pull.
  9. Not yet, but the VW community is riddled with crappy south east asian parts. I've been down that road. 1600 parts just seem to be non-existent. I finally found a yard with 3 complete motors. I might buy two of them just to have them.
  10. Decent 1600 engine parts. I'm giving up on the rebuild for now and am just going to buy a decent used motor. I think I'll actually save money that way. I've been driving VW buses for years and didn't realize how great parts availability was for VW until I got my gen 1 brat.
  11. Thanks. It has not been fun trying to find 1600 parts. Yesterday I did find a yard that has three. For my money I'll probably just go and pick one up. Now that we have a little one getting into the garage has become much more challenging.
  12. Will the EA81 bolt right up to a top mount EA71 bell housing, i.e., will it more or less drop right in and bolt up to the four speed in my brat? Cheers
  13. No, I sent the head back. But, the valve set sent with the head did fit the NOS head, but dropped in past the seat on my head. I'd just buy a set and use them but my head has one extra water line tapped into it. If anyone has a good 1600 head with the ten circle taps, let me know. I'm still in the market. At least according to the head gaskets on rockauto, all 1600 brats had what I'm starting to call the ten hole head. I can't find a head gasket to match that other head for ID.
  14. The valves on the NOS head are smaller too.
  15. I purchased this head as an NOS 1600 EA71 head, but it is not the same as what came off of my brat. Can anyone identify what head it is? Mine is stamped E71, I can not find any markings on this one. Mine is one on the right, and the supposed NOS 1600 on the left, but I am not sure that it is.
  16. I've got the topper for my 78 brat, but no hardware for it. What exactly is the system used to attach it to the car?
  17. I might be off-base here, and wrong, however, I believe that turbo engines are lower compression engines than non-turbos. It's the same reason you really can't slap a turbo on a non-turbo engine. The lower compression compensates for the boost. At least that was my experience with my 91 jetta turbo diesel. Again, I'm just again diving back into subaru's, but I believe that you may need the turbo for that engine to run.
  18. My book indicates that you remove the four mounting bolts for the oil pump, and it should come out. Is that correct? It is loose but does not seem to want to come out of the case.
  19. My 14mm case bolts are stuck, won't even come off with impact. So I think I need some heat. I've been a flat four guy for years but mainly VW's, so I was wondering if my EA71 case is magnesium or aluminium? I just didn't want to apply heat to a magnesium case if that was the case. Pun not intended.
  20. That's great news. I'm sure it will be back up for sale again.
  21. I am in need of a lower(if it's different) caliper guide for my 78 brat. Does anyone have one that they would be willing to sell? I can't find a source for one online. Thanks
