Looks like I'm in for a new headlight switch. I can get the head lights to come on if I turn them "on" then wiggle the switch around a bit.

Did some more(correct) testing per Gloyale. The question I have is with the color of the wires, here's what I've got: LEFT SIDE outer=red/wht middle=red/blk outer=red/blue RIGHT SIDE outer=red middle=red/blk outer=red/wht This is on an 86 GL wagon. When I re-tested the wires I still went with probing the middle wires even though they are a different color than what Gloyale mentioned. Here's what I found with bulbs removed from their plugs and with the key "on". middle wire, right side=.07V middle wire, left side=.08V I also did the test of clipping the test light to the positive side of the battery then probing the outer terminals, no light ever came on. Green fusible link is intact. I've found the GND behind the overflow and another one on the right inner frame rail, just aft of the core support, both are in great shape. Can't find one on the left side. Is it up under the car or should it be in a similar location as the right side?

Thanks for the ideas, I'll re-do that test tomorrow.

Searched but haven't quite found a similar problem. 86 GL wagon One piece headlights, not the 4 individual lights. ALL other lights inside and outside the car work fine. Headlights do not come on, high or low beams, but will come on if you pull back on the hi-lo beam/turn signal stalk. I checked voltage at the three wires for each headlight bulb, here's what I found. Key "on" and HL switch "on" Lo beams Left side wires rd/blu=12V rd/blk=0V rd/wht=12V Right side wires red=0V rd/blk=12V rd/wht=12V Hi beams Left side wires rd/blu=12V rd/blk=0V rd/wht=12V right side wires red=12V rd/blk=12V rd/wht=12V The ground behind the coil and overflow tank looks good, fusible links on overflow tank are intact. Is there another headlight ground on the passenger side, for that headlight or do they both use the one by the coil/overflow?

For simplicity's sake I'm going with the 2'' and came up with my tire size from seeing that some folks have put burly 27s on with that amount of lift. I don't mind trimming the fenders here and there. There's a little a rust around the rear wheel wells that needs to be "fixed" anyway. One reason for my tire size choice, is that there seems to be more options for the type of tire(AT) I want to run. I'm not stuck on that 205/75/15(26.8dia) size though, if I can track down an AT in a 205/70/15(26.5dia) or 215/65/15(26.0dia) that'd be fine with me. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

Newbie here with an 86 GL wagon(GLW?). I've been searching throughout this site gathering info on what I want to do, I just want to make sure before I pull the trigger. I'm going with a 2" lift and running 205/75/15 ATs(26.8" dia.) of some type, maybe General Grabbers. Based on what I've learned from my searches this should work without cutting. Not that I'm opposed to the sawzall and hammer! For wheels I just scored($25) a set of Isuzu 6lug, 4x4 steelies, 15x6. I'm pretty positive this set up will work. What do ya'll think?

Funky blinker, cut out, tach bounce
seanjenn replied to seanjenn's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the ideas fellas. I'm sure it's something simple, can't wait to get back and dive in! -
I just got back into Subies with an 86 Loyale GL wagon, manual trans. She runs and drives very well, can't believe how tight the shifting still is for 200K. When you put on the turn signals, the tach bounces slightly and when you have the right signal on, you can wriggle the lever and make the engine cut out or stutter. It does not stutter/cut out when doing the same thing with the left signal. I'm not with the car right now so I'm gathering info on things to look for when I get back. I'm leaning towards the ign. switch out of habit with my Vanagons. When those switches start to act up, all kinds of weird sh*t starts happening with the van. What do ya'll think?

Hey ya'll! I'm back in the world of Subaru after a brief hiatis. I used to have a 98 Forester, which was OK, wasn't super impressed or disappointed in it. It did what it was supposed to do, but I always wanted an older one with real 4WD. So, this past weekend after helping my buddy pull and swap engines on 3 Loyales, he made me a deal on the 4th, which is the one I wanted anyway. An 86 Loyale GL wagon, naturally I'm already making plans. This Subie will round out my collection nicely, which consists of: 84 Vanagon Adventure Wagen, 84 Vanagon Westy, 62 Ford Falcon Deeeluxe wagon. Now I'm off to the Loyale ward with a question for all you experts.
