  1. I just put RedLine 75W90NS in my '02 OB back in Aug or so. So far I'm pretty happy with it. Shifts are smooth and it's cold weather viscosity is good (only got down to ~0F or so). I had previously used Mobile1 75w90, it wasn't quite as smooth. Biggest problem I had was it seemed to thicken up a lot when it got very cold. One trip to VT at -25F and shifting was very difficult until it warmed up. Some others on this board recommend Valvoline Synpower, I think there are a few threads out there.
  2. I don't have the security system in my '02 OBW, but this procedure worked for me. It did take me a few times to get it right though. I have no idea why the process is so insane! Good luck!
  3. Good diagram from eggo. Guessing you're referring to the tow hook cover on the Pass side? That's the only cover I know of. I can't figure out how to attach already uploaded images to a new thread, so I'll just ref this one: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=89509 Second pic you can see the "hole" where the tow hook is. I can get more tonight if you need...
  4. I ran some Yokohama Avid V4s. Pretty decent tire, good wet/dry grip. They lasted about 45, maybe 50k miles, and by then they were down to the treadwear marks. I replaced them with the GY TripleTread's. So far the TT's are just slightly more "mushy" in hard cornering, but traction so far is great in the wet/dry/snow. Had 'em on for about 7k now. We usually don't get much snow in NJ, so I don't bother with snow tires... The G019's mentioned earlier are the new version of the G009's, which had gotten pretty good reviews with regards to price/performance. Good luck!
  5. ... watching this thread as I'm considering using the ebay pulley's too. Does anyone bother rebuilding them at all? Saw this post as I was doing some searching; http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=17114
  6. +1 on this. Was the source of the leak on my '02. I tightened the hose clamps and that worked, but I'm going to replace the fuel hose soon. You might also check the clamps around your fuel filter. Just run a paper towel or your hand by the end of the hose, and you'll know.
  7. I'm surprised too, looks like it was only standard on the '02 WRX's. http://www.cars101.com/subaru/impreza/impreza2002.html 1stsubaruparts.com lists the keyless entry kit for $60. Says it's "everything" you need, decent price if they include the 2 remotes AND the keyless module...
  8. There is a really good "howto" I found a while back, can't seem to find it again though... After some googling this turned up though: http://www.butkus.org/subaru/outback_stereo/outback_stereo.htm I'm sure I have the FSM pages somewhere... PM me if you'd like 'em. (If you ever get around to the project.) Cheers.
  9. Just to add my 2 cents... '03 should be the first FULL year where the HG problem is fixed. Here is a data point to consider though: my '02 OBW was made in either Feb or March of 02 and the "coolant conditioner" recall does not apply to it. Seems to be like the later half of the '02 model should be okay. Good luck in your search!
  10. I just read somewhere that this may not come to the US in the near future either... Seems that they can't pass 50-state emissions without a urea system and that the licensing cost for that system is prohibitively high... Article: If I'm reading this right it only applies to the Forester, not the Legacy/OB. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=131970
  11. My thought exactly. When I had my windshield replaced the heated one would have been $100 more. Mine was out of pocket, but if you can get the insurance company to cover it, that would be cool.
  12. You could have a dealer look up the VIN and see if the "Cooling System Conditioner - Recall WWP-99" was completed or if the car is eligible for it. My 2002 OBW is not eligible for the recall. The Manufacture Date on the drivers door says 02/02. HG's are good so far (fingers crossed). The 05's+ are def very nice cars. Good luck!
  13. I had a run in with a deer a few weeks a go.. fairly minor body damage. So I've finally got cash in hand from my ins company. Pretty easy process, I was very surprised. I'd like to try and fix as much as I can myself - The first thing I'm trying to figure out are the radiator supports, the upper "tie" bar took most of the damage. I've found an breakout of the individual pieces (attached image). Does anyone know what the easiest way to replace at least the upper support is? It looks like everything is welded into one piece.. Thanks for the assistance. --Nick
  14. I could be mistaken, but I could have sworn I read before (maybe on this board) that when "coasting" in gear, the fuel injectors either cut or reduce fuel consumption (since the moving of the car keeps things rotating). Hopefully someone can chime in with the right knowledge. Cheers.
  15. I found this a few weeks ago when I was checking to see if my 02 OBW had LATCH. http://www.subaru.com/common/faq/index.jsp So that tells me you can at least get the tethers to strap a seat into the car, even though it won't be "LATCH"... Wonder how much they charge for the kit. --Nick
  16. Of course. I'm sure they'd know best! I haven't used chains in a very very long time. I'd bet that as long as you keep them tight you can fit them over the OE sized rubber.
  17. I'd imagine that you'll need to keep the stock tire size (225/60/16 i believe) in order to use tire cables. Manual says not to use chains because of clearance issues. There is only about "2 fingers" of space between the tire and front strut.
  18. Yep, was on 31 near Clinton. I was considering taking the money and doing the work myself, except I'm not sure if my insurance would just cut me a check, but i'll have to ask. I already called a bunch of yards in the area, and no one has an 00-04 hood/front end. I can get a new OE hood (just primed) for about 280.. which isn't bad. Yea, it doesn't look like much, but they priced it out to replace everything that has even minor damage, it added up. I think the labor quote was for ~$2500.
  19. Well it finally happened... While driving home the other night on a State Highway (55mph), a deer jumped over the concrete divider from my left side and i clipped it. Spun the deer around and smacked it into my right quarter panel as well. What a mess. Needless to say I'm not too happy. Initial estimate is ~$4200. Pushed the radiator mount back a bit, but didn't damage any mechanical items fortunately. No airbag deployment thank goodness, and I'm just fine. Here's some pics - doesn't even look that bad!
  20. I have the same issue on my '02 OB - which I'm not sure is covered by the Endwrench articles since they just mention Legacy... However, I was told to replace the slave cylinder and hose. Will be doing that shortly. Out of curiosity, what is the "banjo" bolt?
  21. It isn't too bad to pull apart, but as mentioned be gentle when prying the plastic pieces out. You might want to check out http://www.crutchfield.com for an install guide, it should help you with the dash removal/re-assembly at least.
  22. Skip may chime in here; fortunately his site still works: http://home.comcast.net/~skipnospam/index.html Cheers.
