I've got the same noise on my '02.. took my awhile of pushing molding and stuff around but I finally found that the noise was coming from the inside (maybe outside too) of the mirror gussets. Try pushing in the inside edge of the vertical piece of rubber where the mirror is attached too, and it should stop. Not sure if you got the tweeter kit on yours, but I've heard you can reseat that to make it tighter. I'll be bringing mine in to see what they can do about it... I can deal with the roof-rack and the roof gutters, but that mirror howl sucks! Oh yea, I also read (here) about putting silicone on the rubber seals, i'll be trying that when it get's a bit warmer.. Hope that helps..

Torque
nickb21 replied to tcspeer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
I wouldn't think it would affect the torque reading. Since most extensions don't twist when you crank on them. Unless I'm missing something. -
I've got the same "popping" ( http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/usmb/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5303 ) My only concern is for my O2 sensor(s), hope it doesn't get damaged from this. I'm starting to think it's just a side-affect of being a low-emmision vehicle, maybe the ECU is trying to regulate the fuel more efficiently and this is an unexpected result... would be nice to know more though.

Hey myles, both times i got my clutch replaces they initially said the same thing, so I had a mechanic hop in the car with me and showed them, didn't have any issues after that. Was easiest for me in a flat parking lot just to let it out nice and slow and just engaging at idle would make it rumble every time. Yea, there are definitely some good threads on this board about this. rtp- I agree, and I won't be giving up my 5spd, even if it rev's too high on the highway and chatters now and again. I think I've just been disappointed w/ my local dealer's skill (lack of).

Found this little guy over here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread/t-357866.html I too have the new clutch kit in my '02, 5k mi so far.. chatters once in awhile. I've also noticed that a lot of the time when i let the clutch out, instead of having a smooth release, it seems to grab at the last second when it fully engages. Maybe I just need to adjust my driving more, but it seems to require a bit more finess to get a real smooth release..

Rack Baffles ?
nickb21 replied to fooj's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Wow, didn't know they could fail you for that, I passed inspection with a plastic bag/zip tie boot on my old car.. As far as I know they don't make two piece shells for steering rack boots like they do for CV's, so you'll have to unscrew the outside of the inner tie rod to get the new boot over it. If you measure how far the tie rod is screwed in you should be able to get the alignment fairly close again (don't count turns, it's not as accurate), but might not be as good as a professional job... -
I'm from NW NJ, there doesn't seem to be a lot of good subaru places around, but maybe I'm just a bit skeptical.. I'm still under warranty, and will be trying out the service department at morristown subaru, probably about an hour away from you (almost an hour for me too ) Brakes do look pretty easy to do if you're able, you should be able to get rotors cut for maybe 10 or 20 bucks a rotor, or 1stsubaruparts has new ones listed for about $70. I would think you'r drums are ok. If all else fails, I would try to find a good inde. mechanic and provide them with the necessary parts, so you know they use the right ones. CV's and brakes should be pretty generic tasks..

Spark Plugs

There's also some pretty good info in this thread: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/usmb/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9056 For plug wires, I'd think OEM or NGK, maybe even Bosch.. -
Ice building on windshield removal tip
nickb21 replied to viceversa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I put FogX on my inside windshield every now and then, seems to work pretty well for a few weeks. Just be careful not to put too much on or it makes the inside of the glass look funny... -
stiff brakes 90 Loyale
nickb21 replied to brus brother's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
When was the last time you bled/flushed the brake fluid? I noticed some brake stiffness on my 02 when it was -15F until it warmed up, I'm chalking it up to moisture and plan on flushing the fluid when it gets a bit warmer.. 99 has a good point to check the slides as well. -
Piston Slap

I've got semi-syn in mine (tried pre-mix and my own mix) and it doesn't seem to help much. It's only really noticeable for me when the temp is in the teens or lower (F). And I don't like the noise when it's cold and you step on the gas, takes mine a few minutes after "normal" temp for it to go away and hot heat to actually get going.. -
The things i've read say they're just projector halogens, even though they kinda look like xenon's.. Found some neat stuff on the australia subaru site.. maybe some will apply to us models. "Electronic throttle control system" i.e. throttle by wire, pretty cool! "Auto boot release on key" .. translates to a remote trunk release looks like their "liberty" 2.0i and 2.5i will be avail with d/r trany's too, bet we won't see that!

I've only been there once for an alignment, they managed not to screw that up. A friend had his cv's done there, and his trans fluid leaked cause they messed up a seal, so he wasn't too impressed. There of course is this: http://www.carinfo.com/repair.html I would think that as long as you double-check the oil level, and make sure oil isn't leaking around the filter before you leave, you'll be alright..
-
seems to be a common theme.. i wonder if there is that much pressure to get more cars serviced, and enough attention isn't paid to quality control.. when i picked up my car from the dealer after they "serviced" it, I drained 1.5 quarts of oil out, and noticed there was about a quarter inch of coolant in the resevoir, needless to say I wasn't too impressed..

You might also want to consider getting the gear oil changed in the front and rear diffs, and maybe throwing in a new PCV valve. Flushing the brake fluid completely might also be something to think about, since it accumulates water and other crud over time. I've been reading through some of the info here, seems to have some pretty good stuff: http://endwrench.com/archive/sysgen.html Hopefully you'll get a better price out there, the crooks around here want $400 for the 30k/60k mi services..
