With the anticipated arrival of the gaskets nearing, I've begun to look at my "two-piece"windshield and contemplated having it replaced. The local glass shop just called me with a quote for a new windshield installed at $250. Pretty freaking steep since I paid a little more than that for the whole car. What have you gentlemen done in your respective vehicles? Still running cracked glass? Scored big and found one on a donor, or paid for a new one? I'm excited for this gasket, no more leaks!

I found this by bouncing around on YouTube after watching Lucky Texan's clip. It seems that elsewhere it is also being marketed as a Toyota, what I find interesting is that they didn't mention it also being a Scion. -
Hidden meanings?

The alternator surely had crapped out. Actually came to a complete standstill in Pocatello at 1:45am. I had a buddy bring down the alternator out of my 91 Loyale an the little car fired up and tore its way back to Rexburg. Funny thing about that alternator was that it kept the wagon running after the key was turned to the off position. Any who, the alternator was replaced and while digging around it looks as though it was once fitted with a turbo. Does anyone have evidence that these old wagons were turbo'd? I'd love to hook one up if anyone happened to know where I could get a simple turbo to add a smidge of power? -
I've recently driven my '78 wagon down to Utah from Idaho and it's had is fun marking it's territory but it has decided today would be a good day to show it's brake light and "CHG" light simultaneously. Any insight? I haven't been able to pick up a Haynes or Chiltons manual for it yet.

As the title states the wagons switch is gone as far as I can tell and from what it looks the previous owner had some metal chomping alligator gnaw at it. Any way, when turning the key I don't get the pleasant click at each of the positions. I popped the cover off and fiddled around with it and the tumbler tumbled out. A rocker and pin fell out with it and I've no idea how this occurred. I drove it to work and now I sit in the parking lot confused. Help!

Got the crank and decals, I'll get them in later this week. Thanks again Todd.

'78 GL Wagon

Right, well that makes sense. Thanks for the lesson, and if you do happen to have another front fender/push bar, kick some photos my way with prices and I'll be in touch. I did get a new starter put in yesterday and now she starts up without any issues. also took her down to the local car wash and did a quick hose out of the engine compartment. It looks much better. I'll keep doing some cleaning and some little things to make it more the way I'd like it to be, repaint the rims and the calipers, remove the 'home' theater system and replace with 'car audio'. Simple things to work on for now. I have a '91 Loyale that needs some attention. A new oil pump and head gaskets to be specific. -

Moosens, where did you happen upon that front bumper? I quite like that. Or if you happen to know where I might be able to obtain one, that would be great. -

I'm a special person. I don't know how I got it in my head that I thought it was DL and not GL like its supposed to be. Wow... -
'78 GL Wagon

Terminals cleaned and battery replaced, but with no avail. Next I'm going to replace the cable leading to the starter. See if that helps. They were rather gnarly when I was trimming up the edges to put on the new clamps I found in the back of it. I also found a set of chains in a bag under the tire on the roof. -

I was digging around in the back of the wagon this morning and found some parts that were meant to be part of its restoration. I got in contact with the fellow that I got the wagon from and he mentioned that the owner previous to him had a bunch of spare parts for it that he offered along with the car at the time of the transaction. He also offered to get hold the previous owner and see if he had those parts still and would get as many of them as possible for me. I also found new terminals in the back so those will get changed today for sure after work. -
I happened upon this site a couple weeks ago after purchasing my '91 Loyale and have been digging through here ever since, daily, to expand my little understanding of the Subaru. I also recently had the opportunity to acquire a piece of Subaru history, a '78 GL Wagon. This is it in all it's Idahoan glory. So this is my new baby. A bit rusty here and there, but not too terribly much to worry about. There are only a few places where the rust has gone through the entire body panel. Sadly though it doesn't like to start on it's own. I've had to push start it a couple times to get it running. Once it's running though it sounds great and I have no issues. Wagon has power and you can tell through the dimming of the lights on the dash that it's sending power somewhere when the key is turned but I don't even get a click or attempt from the starter. Understand that I'm new to working on cars and understanding the entire system of how it all works together to become the beast I know it can be. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. I don't have much background so anywhere to start would be great. Thank you all, for inciting in me a love for Subaru and these amazing vehicles.

Thanks for the thread and all the great pictures. I'm getting a '78 wagon tomorrow and it's a bit on the rusty side. Looking at all the work and joy that you're putting into this wagon is thrilling as I think of what I'll be doing with mine here very soon. Keep it coming, I'm loving it.
