3. Yikes !!So how does that work??The funny thing about subaru altenators is almost everyone I have replaced was from Over chargeing....and that was quite a few...Well i will tell her to keep a eye on her alt.guage and watch for changes..Thanks again.so are a cabnet maker?..
4. Ok guys.I was just working on my daughters 84 wagons breaks and i had to remove the now famous cone washer and guess what ???I'm full of s#%&.So once I have seen a cone washer worn so bad it was like I discribed above. So scratch all I said about that...OK .....Slowly now...Open Mouth....Insert Foot...Mupf netum womfnut....
5. Wow..!! I haven't read your whole story but will tonight..I just brought home a 84 GL 10,It too had the Black valve covers?? How cool HaHa.Anyway have you had any issues with the digital dash? When I drove mine home after sitting since 2004 there was no lights on the dash, nothing worked. The next day the guages lit up but didn't make sence. Then day 3 the guages all worked. So I hope it stays that way.The clock thing sure looks interesting??So any advice..Oh and by the way, You have a very cool subaru and have done a exellent job on the "extras"..And for being a first timer you fell into a subaru addicts dream!!! Have fun with it.C ya Toddnic
6. Ok guys One last thought..Now if you were lookin at a sideview that was "cutaway...the axel going north and south. You could see the flat washer pushing down on the cone washer holding everything tight. Now if the cone washer is too thin the flat washer will "bottom out" against the hub and leaving the cone washer uncompressed. Now if the flat washer was a hair smaller it would push the cone down enough to hold the tourqe setting....Right??? Does this make sence? I too have used many used cone washers and did ok only because the cone was thick enough to make contact with the flat washer and then making a good fit with the hub...so I hope that clears everything up HAHA..Boy i'm so glad we are all friends, hate to think where this could go among enemy's !!!: ok.ok one more though...Now if you filed the flat washer so it was "coned" some it could be pushed against the real cone washer and not bottom out on the hub, thus holdin it all together.. Happy Trails
7. Hello,I am posting this for a friend who want to unload it.Its a rusted out green wagon. Not sure if its a gl or dl or if those were even around..haha anyway I'll get some pictures and do inventory and get back to ya..He would be glad to just give the whole thing away..I'll be back..Todd
8. I have a 1979 brat that might have those handles.it was my first Subaru.I gave it to my son who ran the wheels off it (as did I) ,Then he sold it to Old One Eye who also ran the tires off it and then I got it back..still running great..No I has a bad engine...:banana:I'll look tommorow and let ya know.Good rides those old ones.
9. The cone washer needs to be the right thickness so all the filing won't help.Altho I have done that in a jam.i filed off the ridge and smothed the face of it and it worked...for a while.Usually when the axel nut get loose you are lookin at new wheel bearings and cone washer and washer. You can streach some miles out of them with re-tourqing and doing this and that but in the end...Bearings need to be replaced.I would just go to pull a part and take the "whole sha bang"...the Hub and the wheelbearing assenbly, cone washer and flat washer. It may take some lookin but that would be a good quick fix.I have lost faith in the dealers. They don't seem to care abouty "the old stuff" I mean should'nt they have conewashers in stock? I mean really. They sure don't take up shelf space...If i do have to go to the dealer.I always buy a couple of carter? pins for the axel. They are like 35 cents or something. There good to have around.Anyway "Oh it looks like I will have to ORDER them !!!!and it will take a few days....What!! Management !!They should be well stocked with this stuff as i bet they reapair a lot of axels, ect. So hang in there ,you'll have her rollin soon enough,C ya,todd:banana:
10. With a good bag its no problem. Some of my best camping trips were in the snow...Its just the getting in and out thats the problem.I'm kind of a late sleeper so the mornings shouldn't be too bad.Its just getting in there comfortabley that I'm shootin for..Shawn,Thank you again for helping me with that blown headgaskets in my time of need. Its still purring,I had to drive it from California to your place with the defrost on full blast to keep from over heating and it was in the 90s when i left the Salton Sea..Our Subarus are one tuff machine .I hope bussiness is doing good for you.....Happy Trails,Todd. P S off subject but....I just found out that "todds " my first membership is still here.I opened old sub freak just cause i was in a hurry and needed some info....so I had forgot my password,How do fix that? I want my seniority back..haha
11. You know your right.....but.... It would be nice to have the heat and the extra room..I have used a 88 wagon a few times and that worked good. I just like the t tops down in the desert heat. I probley won't cut the back out, that would involve alot of work. The vent tube still seems like it would work.I have sealed up the canopy and any holes in the bed, then covered the floor with blue foam camping pads.I thought if i had a long enough tube I could just run it right into my sleeping bag to warm it up.Then have a string tied to the tube so after it has warmed the bag up I pull the string that pulls the tube out to heat the "bedroom" HaHa.....I just get to thinkin too much...Anyway I'll let you all know how the tube works.Like I have said I just want to take the chill of so I can hop into the sack without freezing my duff off....Take care ,Todd
12. A small piece of black tape will fix the check engine light... haha,Well my daughter wants one of them ,probley the GL 10,unless it turns out to be trouble with the fancy dash..My wife is wondering about the yellow one as well.It all depends how they clean up and how they run.So far ,so good...Can't wait to see what the 82 with the 3rd eye looks like.hope it isn't to rusty.wonder if it will be a full pull and get all 3 running without too much work....i bet it will. thanks guys
13. Its the green one.. Any special shots ?On the way home the dash lights were off.Once i got it home and was letting it idle checking things out the dash gauges came on but didn't make sence. Then the next day they come on and its alright.Guages making sence. So I'm hopeing that its a contact and I will never have trouble again...haha.I am a hopeless optimust though...So any bits of info that would help would be great. I need to replace a froze up caliper on the drivers side. Do those need to be replaced in sets.Or can you just replace the one? Hey thanks for posting the pictures,Hey I'm still learning.Happy Trails,Todd
14. Did it work??:banahttp://http://imageshack.us/a/img27/5329/newsubs006.jpg[/img]na: http://imageshack.us/a/img845/1419/newsubs002.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img831/8328/ing016.jpg I think i got it ????? I think? http://imageshack.us/a/img27/5329/newsubs006.jpg The green brat in my daily driver since 1996!!! I love it,Had to show it
15. [/img][/img][/img]RUSTING !!!But no more.My daughter wanted for her "forever car" to be a 1984 gl wagon like her first car.Smart girl........So i got to thinkin where to get one.Hmmmm I do have a friend who has a 2 84's in his back lot. "Well sure you can have them ,Good to see them on the road again" Oh Yea!!! So we jamed up there and there they were, right on the edge of some "woods" with one in the woods and just it nose stickin out.I'll get a shot of that..So the first one was a yellow 84 GL wagon.Oh did i say they had all been sitting there since 2004... So I put 3 gallons of Ethel in the tank and a spash in the carb and ....Bingo,she fired right up.but the throttel was stuck ,the only we could move it was to use a long screwdriver and a hammer to "adjust it.We ended up using a tow bar on her to get it home, but with some PB Blaster and some messin with i got it workin good... Its got 172,000 on it..moss and mold everywhere.Hey we live in the GreatNorth Wet !!(West) Hey ,thats Why they call it the "Evergreen State"...I think with a good cleaning and some filters she'll be a runner...#2 is a 1984 GL 10,with the eltronic dash. Are these as solid as the regular GL's? Please let me know how they fare out.Are they worth the time to go through or they like the turbo's?? So it has 177,000 on it. Again some fresh gas in the tank a bit into the carb......Fired right up!!!! ..I love these cars!!!!the dash guages are not doing much. but its running great.. I drove it home about 10 miles and the brakes were draging and will need some attion.I am going to get the 1982 gl wagon with the covitid 3rd eye this saterday. I didn't even take the time to check it out as I was still trippin on the ones we just got running. Both of them have rust issues along the bottom of the doors, not the doors but the body under them..So i will get back with the low down on the 82.He also has a rusted out Green 1974?wagon.It would be good for parts.I'll get back with some shots of it.There's no paperwork but could be had for $50 bucks. So I will get back with more adventures.C ya,Todd[/img] So I guess I don't have enough something to post pictures or am i doing it wrong.I couldn't find a phote album on my statictics to download them to....Help???
16. Very good young man !!I too love taking something old and rattty lookin and makin it look good again..Hmmmmm You know,i do that every morning !!! haha,Good work.Todd
17. E81 S ...hmmmm Hey Mark,Good to see your having fun with your E81S. We should start a gang..haha The 81 S's ?? No..... ,Mine is still chuggin along.I have asked around about someplace that could re-build mine with out any luck. I have never had any luck once I open up a hatichi.I usually just swap carbs till I find a good one..But to find 2 of them?? anyway Have fun in that Montana snow !! Happy Trails, todd
18. Wow,W W ,I thought I was old!!! Glad your still up and around...So I think I will try the Dryer vent tube first just because it is the easist and If it dosn't work I can just pactch it back up. Then if that dosn't heat it up enough I'll go for a heater core off something. So thank you all for your imput. But If anyone has pictures of a brat with the back wall removed I sure would want to see it Just in case.......Keep on Subin !! thanks,Todd:banana:
19. A few years back I did use a 88 wagon for cruzin. It worked great,it just isn't as cool as a brat..haha I wish i had a "cadaver" to practice on before I cut into my brat..I may try the dryer vent hose first and see if that warms it up back there enough. That way I'm not getting too "carried away". (I wonder where that term came from?) I only need to warm it up back there a few nights as i plan on going to the desert in southern Califorina and its the drive there and back where i to crash in the back to save $$.I used to love winter camping but now that I'm older......Bring on the sunshine!!! thanks again,Todd the desert rat!!
20. You know the converter would be a overkill for what i want to do.i don't want to heat it for the night ,just warm enough to get undressed and in the sack without freezing my duff off.It just happened enough that instead of crawling in the back i grab a cheap motel..$$$ so what would be great is to open her up and then the whole area would be warm enough to get to bed and have alot more room to streach out in.So just take a sawzal and buzz down both sides and then bend the flap back into the bed for extra support.I could bolt that down and smooth it out or is that too much? And then get a roll bar of sorts. Has any one done this.i sure would like to see a "proto type" before i plug in the sawzal!! I also have a Cruze control i got from down under.. A AP 60 from Auto piolet?? Has anyone installed one on a Gen 1 or is an 1984 a gen 2?? Its a 1800 pushrod without turbo, stick. or should this question be in a different spot. so back to the main subject.....some pictures of a opened up brat would be great. Thanks again,Todd
21. Hey Bennie ,Thanks for the info on 'Ute Swags... Look good execpy i have a canopy "glued" on to my brat.its there for good. I will have to look into those 12 volt heaters,Mabey they have improved over the years. Now something like that jeep heater would do a great job.Anyone heard of those? take care,Todd
22. No ideas about taking out the wall in between the cab and the bed??? That would be great if it didn't weakin things up too much. Or I think I will try the 4" dryer tube and if that dosn't work out i'll go for a water heater of sorts back there.I once used my brother-in-laws Jeep pick up.It had a great 12 heater in it.I had never heard of such a thing till i used his truck.Dead of winter ,start the truck and in seconds HOT air blowin out.I couldn't believe it,thinking how could it warm up so fast. Then was told it was electric.I think it was a 1970's model. anyway thanks again.i'll get it ready for this Great Northwet winter weather..haha:banana:
