  1. Hmm,I had thought of that as well.I was worried that it might weaken things. Was it beefed up any where to add strength? That would be great as I'm tall and the extra room would be great.....Hmmmmm Anyone else seen that? Thanks.....also the toyota heating unit would be good as well.I thought of installing a radeator in the back and box it in with expanded steel or framing of some sort.I'll look into that toyota one ,a lot less work...Again,Thanks
  2. Thanks for getting back to me.I once tried a 12 heater and wasn't too happy with it.But that was 10 years ago.Mabey things have changed. I plumbed in a heater core into a 1947 international bread van.If done right it would work. The most important part was to bleed it from the highest part of the tubing. We worked on it and couldn't get it warm.A friends dad showed us how to bleed the air out of the lines. After that it worked great. We now had defrost and heat ... Most school buses have hot water heaters in them.We always raced to get the hot spot on the bus. So as far as using the dryer tubeing ,no thoughts? I thought if i removed the tube that goes to the passenger defrost from the heater assembly.i might be able to get "major air" back there. I only need the back warm till I get settled in and I should be good. No,It wouldn't be a good idea to leave it idle for heating. That would be bad...so any thoughts?
  3. I plan on doing some cruzing in my brat this winter with a canopy on back. The problem I have is when i stop for the night I don't feel like crawling into the COLD canopy where all my bedding is cold as well.So I end up at a motel spending waaaaay to much $$. So my plan is to some how heat the bed up.One thought is to plumb in a heater core or a small radeator.Thats do able but kind of involved.Or using some 4" dryer tubing that I could plumb to the defroster on the passenger side to a hole cut in the back wall. Or ??? Any ideas. I'm too old to freeze my duff off crawling around in the back of a unheated "camper" haha. so has anyone tried something like this? thanks,Todd:banana:
  4. Hey Mark,How are ya,just lookin at old pictures and found the ones you posted for me.Thank You!! I'm doing good. You take care,Todd

  5. Hey gang, My 83 brat that i have hadC:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Document sence 1995 has duel carbs with manual chokes.Thats perty rare isn't it? anyway i would like to get them rebuilt sometime soon.It runs good but is getting hard to start.i rebuilt one of them 10? years ago.I know ,i don't know what i was thinkin.Probley that i would do the other one soon.. anyway i have been told the re build kits are hard to come by as these are Japan only carbs. Or just install two rebuilt ones i saw on line for $200 each. But if i did that i would loose the manual choke set up. Its really tharshed and funky but i love it and plan on driving it till the body breaks in two....haha...so any ideas guys?". .Thanks,Todd don't know if this picture will work. i forgot my password on my old sigh in thing. its under todds.might be some pictures there:banana: i dig the Banana Dance
  6. Thank you. Its stuff like this that keep me on my toes(and back). just so thankfull that it didn't blow a headgasket. That is why i LOVE my subarus, they are so forgiving and they just keep on "ticking"(so to speak). so take care, till next time...Todd:banana:
  7. :banana:Duh!!Being the hopeless optimist that i am and the fact that there was water dripping off the drain bolt that i had a straight foward ,easy leak to repair...HAHA Well it wasn't 2 bad.....Thank God, before i installed the new crush ring i thought i would just check things over, just in case i missed something.well i fired it up and low and behold its still leaking,,,,so i got some Awsom degresser and rags and a stick and cleaned the whole area(thats what i should have done first thing...)Well, as i fallow the leak "upstream" i see its coming from the pencile size water line that goes from the thermastat housing to the intake manafold.Fixed it in 5 minutes.....It seems that the hose had rubbed through on the 12mm bolt that holds the dipstick "frame"to the top of the block, i just didn't see it under all the stuff.. ...So this is a classic example of "The hurrier i go,The behinder i get." So,Todd ....Slow down!!!....don't jump the gun, keep your engine clean and follow all leaks "Up stream" first..i will say it had me stumped. The car had been using anti freeze, not alot ,and not all the time.,but no water under the rig when you parked it,i could'nt find a leak..so i figured it had a cracked head and well see how long this subie will go.....SUPRIZE!! the leaked water would evoperate off the top off the engine.with no trace...almost like Gus Wilson,Model Garage mystery.,that was a Good fix. Ill know next time.. Thanks for the advice and the moral suport guys. Happy Trails,Todd
  8. well i will know tommorow.i called 3 different dealers in the area and they all had to order one.so i got one coming tommorow with a new bolt as well.for $10 bucks, that includes overnight shipping, so we will see.i too wonder if a small crack is doing it but i cleaned the whole area and looked very closely but couldn't see anything.i'll let you know tommorow...thanks,Todd
  9. Well tried all day saterday and it still leaks.tried many different washers and sealers and even teflon tape..still leaks.i'll have to run down a crush washer and hope that does it.i cleaned the whole area and couldn't find any cracks with and with out the bolt in there....i'm still sweatin it though.don't want to deal with a cracked head.....i mean how can something so simple not seal?? and why did it start? ,she did overheat it but i'v never had anything like this...so i'll let you know..thanks
  10. Hmmm, well i'm going to town and see if i can find something.it looks like the block is ok,there is no cracks and the treads are good.i seem to get the wierd stuff....anyway thanks for the info and i'll let ya know what seals it.c ya,Todd
  11. from what i understand a crush ring crush's down as you tighten the bolt making a custom fit so to speak.once it has been used its no good to use again.but the one i removed seemed like a thick flat aluminum washer without any taper to fill the concave taper that goes into the head. now that i think about it the washer should have a domed side to it but it dosn't.mabe that is the problem. sorry don't know the tourque setting,Thanks,Todd
  12. Hey Gang,Well my daughters 1988 gl wagon with the overhead cam 1800 started leaking from the drain bolt on the bottom of the cylinder head...hmm no biggie, right? so i took out the bolt, cleaned everything and re-installed the bolt and the aluminum washer with some sealer. nada...still leaks.so i got ahold of my subaru master and he told me i need a "crush ring" as the hole going into the head is tappered some and you need the "crush ring"to seal it.well i looked all over and couldn't find one.the local dealed said a week to order one. so i went home and tryed many different combo's and it still leaked.i'm hopeing to go to some out of town dealers and mabey find one without ording it. so has anyone had this leaking problem and is the crush ring the only fix? i may hunt down a used bolt n washer this weekend just to see if that might work. thanks,Todd:banana:
  13. Hello there, well a few years back when we were getting alot of engines from Japan with 40,000 miles they had everything on them, carb, dist and altenator.well we slaped a engine in a gen one brat(i think) and low and behold it wouldn't turn off...hmmm? well it turned out that the altenator had a built in voltage regulator and the sub we were workin on had a exteneral voltage regulator.on the firewall i think. so if you get a alt with no built in voltage regulator you should be ok.having the extra V R kept power going to the distributor....anyway thats how i fixed it.boy talk about a shock ,turn off the rig and it still runs... good luck ,Todd:banana:.
  14. Well thank you guys..the 2.2 in the block should do the trick. ..well that will sure make it easyer to be sure i got the 2.2 and not a 2.5. going to look at a 1997 legacy tommorow.thanks again guys,Todd
  15. Hello,i am looking for a mid 90's wagon for my wife.now i know the 2.2 is better than the 2.5.so how do i tell the difference by looking at them.i have my eye on one but i want to be sure its a 2.2. any pointers? thanks, todd:banana:
  16. Hmmm ,so if anything a new pump is in order. so other than loosing it going around a sharp corner it should be ok ? boy it sure feels better than the old Hatichie...this is my 3rd Rat Brat i'm workin on... we met up at Evans Creek around midnight years ago and you had a hatch,,right? C Ya ,todd:banana:
  17. hey gang,so what about the fuel pressure.:banana:the banana guy is worried...but seriously ,i haven't snooped abound too much about it.its been along time since i installed one and have just plane forgot.....it happens.should i get a fuel regulater? thanks ,todd

  20. very good...i was wondering if anyone has ever welded up the inside of the tranny so it would be "locked up"like we have done on the rear ends. years ago we talked about it but alas never did it.so has anyone ever done that and did it hold up? it fun to see what people are coming up with.... c ya,todd
  21. Hey Turbone, thanks for the tip. he sounds like my kind of guy....hope this works out.thanks again,Todd:banana:
  22. so i am heading to denver from palm springs with a blown head gasket or cracked head.i used some Bars head gasket sealer 1000 miles ago. it worked great for some time .then i went up a long hill, never over hearted but mabey using compression on the way down might have done something...or? so i re-applyed the 2nd half last night and hope to make it to colorado.so does anyone know a good shop between grand junction and denver? and/or a good place to get some e81 heads... 100 degrees here at the Salton Sea today.....almost too much.but i'm heading to cooler places.thanks for any leads,Todd:banana:
  23. slap in a good used dist and i bet you will be running again.i have been told that the dist. is a weak link in the ea81's.i carry a extra any time i go on a road trip. easy fix out out on the road....try it.bet it works..good luck:banana:,Todd
  24. now just take a deep breath and relax...this too shall pass.. hey i know how bad those Americians can get!!HAHA.. so i found the AP60 in two places in Australia. importdrivers wants $295 and NETSPARES only wants $179..should i go for the netspares? have you heard of them and could the price be so much different? anyway we'll get this figured out.again Thanks:banana:
