today i bought a 86 4x4 wagon with 403,527 miles!!!.i'm impressed.i got it at the local tow yard. the front end is somewhat cracked up.hood, left front fender, control arm ect,but i drove it home for $50 bucks! the drive train seems tight and the rest of the body is straight. BUT the inside!!!! is grodey to the max!!!! i can handle ratty old cars, but this is gross, like 20 years of spilt coffee all over the dash and sweaty oily seats. then toped of w/thick dust. cool huh. i got another 86 w/good insides i'd like to deck it out,but we'll see. i'll try to post pic of speedo. so any way happy subin todd

mpg/ rpm, what works best??
old sub freak replied to old sub freak's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks for the imput. i'll run em tight, 3000-4000 rpm.i never liked luggin it. todd -
i installed a"mileometer" [vacume gage} on my ea81 hacth. its sposed to tell you when you get the best milage per vacume presure. well on the freeway at say 65mph in 3rd gear, 3500 rpms the guage reads GOOD/ high vacume. i shift to 4th,2000-2500rpms it reads POOR low vacume. i have 14 in tires so i'm some what guessing on the mph. i'm to lazy to really check the mpg{hey thats why i bought the mileometer} so i would think you would get better gas milage in 3rd/3500rpm. what are your thougts? and i'll sure try to do hood river. toddw/northern aliance crew ]

yes to pull the core by the book is a JOB! what i have done on e81s is to use a dremmel tool and cut it out.its still a lot a of work but better then pulling the whole show out. it slides out like a tape deck and slide the new one back , little silicone. HEAT!! do try flushing first. i've saved a few that way .stay warm todd duh! i was trying to answer the guy with heater core problem. live and learn

what worked for me was to remave the pins and drive slowly around the block. but even that is no garente? they will come loose. just be sure to clean the threads and use anti sieze for next time good luck todd

i got a good ea81 there this summer 150 bucks. w/dist, carb ,alt and starter, the hole ball of wax!! i took in a battery and did a compresion check. seems good. i was leery too, thew were side stepping any testing questing.so i did it myself. you can't beat the price w/a 30 day swap. i know of a 74 wagon, for parts if you go w/a1400[as foolish as it seems] just kidding man!! todd 360 424 4340

oil leaking on my 1.8 Gl 4WD '86 Coupe
old sub freak replied to ocsike74's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey, i 've had good luck fixing those leaks. the trick to the front seal is to use high tack sealer [almost glue] to hold in the seal i've used blue silicone onley to have it " walk" it moved 1/8 inch. in 6 months. and pre-oil the race before putting in the pully. now on to the oil pump,i've also good luck installing a oil seal kit[from the dealer] it can be hard to get the pump out. take your time pulling the oil filter up & down while GENTLY prying it out. pry on outside areas of the pump not in between the metal to metal plates[ does that make sence]. the seals are probaly hard as a hard seal and will break in your hand. take it easy taking out the 2 philip screws, there easy to strip[i've had to un screw them with a small chisil] once the pump is out its easy to "reseal"it. the last stinker is to put a LITTLE sealer on the seal between the pump and the block. i've had them fall off or move on install. i've done this a dozen times with good results. don't get in a hurry and you'll do fine. good luck ,todd ,the old one p.s. it can be tough getting it back in. line up the "keys" .get in place and use the bolts to pull it in [cris cross],be carefull that everything is lined up and slowly pull it in. have fun todd -
