  1. Well I hope this is the final chapter on the cursed oil seal....I went to put everything back together and again the new seal will not fit ...Hmmmm The used seal i had fit in the shop where we dressed the hole up at,but not this new one, again just a coat of paint too thick....so I took off the bell housing and put it on from the inside !! Unreal.....It was a bugger.... I said a prayer it would hold...and it apparently did..But not before worrying me sick...We get the engine in and all looks good.We run to the gas station and back and there is oil all over the under side of the tranny and cross bar...... Soooooo, I cleaned n wiped as bests i could and pondered....Hmmmm..What would Guss do ?.Is this going to take three trys ?????So we fired it up and watched....... but no leaks. No LEAKS ! ???... So my theory is this...Just before i installed the engine i spilled a bit filling it up with oil...Could that oil have layed somewhere on the engine area and was wind blown back when we went to the station ??? Or is the Cosmos in tune with Neptune making life just seem real.... haha...I'll let you how the next hundred miles plays out.....
  2. Yep,When they changed the 1400 to a 1600 they needed to change the 1400 bell housing to the 1600 engine....and the flywheel too, I am guessing. So on the back of the flywheel was a raised rib that rubbed on the bell housing casing around the rear crank seal hole, now that caused enough heat that the bottom of the crank seal was out of sink....sinc ? Anyway we fixed it with a rat tail file. Boy it sure looks funny when you write it down.... Rat tail file ? haha it sure does look like one... So..I chased down another rear seal and we will see..Boy what a head scratchier ?/? Ever heard of The Model Garage from Popular Science magazines? From 1929 to the early 1060 they had a monthly Automotive mystery. Gus Wilson was the Mechanic that solved the mystery's...This could have been one of them ......!
  3. Wow !! i can't believe all the enthusiasm for the Worlds Record Parade.. Oh Ho Hum.I'll go next time...Well if any goes.i'll see you there
  4. Its a 1600 from a newer subaru.like mabey from 1978 thru 1980..
  5. So i am working on a 1974 Coupe with a aftermarket 1600 in it..I can't seem to install the rear crankshaft seal...I have installed many 1600 and 1800 without any problems... It seems the seal is just a hair too big and will just not go in without tearing the outer rubber on the seal...hmmmmm? I think the bell housing is a 1400 as it doesn't match any of the 1600's I have laying around here..From what I can tell the 1400 and the 1600 use the same seal....I was hopeing the 1400 was just a scosh smaller but no...(Insert sad face).Well any thoughts? Thanks ,todd this is the original seal...
  6. No the picture didn't work but i posted it on a new post about crankshaft seal..really ugly.......Well i opened it up and sure as toast the rear seal is leaking..And the 1400 and the 1600 uses the same seal...Hmmmm So now what do i do? Anyone have any trouble like that?
  7. rear sealWell we open her up and found the rear oil seal was toast. It looked like it was pushed in too far and someone just filled the gap with blue sealer. So we cleaned everything up and tried to install a used(hey I know but it was one I installed only a few years ago) in the 1600 set up. well it wouldn't go,I ended up tapping so hard it tore the rubber off the outer ring of the seal.I have honestly installed dozens of Subaru rear seals and never had this kind of problem. So I ordered a new one for the 1600 ,I used fine sandpaper and cleaned the bell housing where the seal sits,Didn't look bad...So I go to install the seal and ....Dang it just doesn't fit maybe a 1/16 or 1/32 over? I end up tearing the outer side of the seal..... Hmmmmm well its installed and it just has to work.....yea right haha.so we install the engine and ,..........Its dumping out oil from that seal..I'm guessing ,haven't open it up yet but it seems that way. I coated the flywheel bolts so thats good.... So this rig had a 1400 that was swaped to a 1600. So I thought mabey they used the 1400 bell housing on the new 1600 so it will work ??? again just guessing.and that the 1400 seal was smaller than the 1600.and that would explain the mystery...Nada !I looked all over on line to see if they were the same gasket ......and it appears that they are the same..(insert puzzled, suprized face).Soooooo I plan on calling some of the supply houses and see what up ? The engine has been split at some point, you can see ample sealer everywhere..Did they use the 1400 bell housing to adapt the 1600's in? Any thoughts? thanks todd did the picture work?
  8. I have 2 1600 trannys you could choose from. Or if this book could help you...We'll get er going.....I hope the picture works ...
  9. I will keep an eye open for a good used one....Thats a 1600 right? If so I have one I could part with...I'll double check and let you know...
  10. Well ,Think we can dig up 550 Subarus ?? I can bring at least 3....and my daughters both drive Subies so theres 5 right there.Only 545 to go..haha.. Should be fun
  11. Wow, thanks guys!! So I hope you made it home and sorry no one helped you...Did you find the problem? if you have tube type fuses sometimes just cleaning the contacts good will stop the problem.....Sometimes. It sounds like something might be grounded in the hazards lights.. Just "chase the wires" as they say. we used to check for shorts at night by just shaking the wires and look for sparks..that works.. so don't give up on the board..It is a gold mine on info.. Good luck, todd
  12. Yea any kind of adhesive will hold it in place. I just used tub calk cause i has some open and close haha So your working on the drivers door ..right? I'll see what I can up with
  13. Wouldn't fit .I tried... You would have to make or find 2 small stacks and linkage like a old VW had.. That worked for there 1800's
  14. I still have duel carbs on my 83 brat.I think it had a lot of jump when they were running good... And add in the cool factor and it really purrs.haha i have been thinking of replacing them with a weber.I have had the rig for 20 + years and rebuilt one carb 10?years ago haha .Smart ,I know,Don't even remember which one... haha. Anyway, from what I could dig up on the Hitachi carbs is that rebiult ones don't last and a new one is 800 bucks...... I would love to keep the duels on it but they have lost a lot of pep over the years. I thought of getting a couple of aftermarket ones off ebay and see what happens..I know they had more power than a single. We would have to race to see if the weber beats though. ..Anyone ever hear any good about rebuilt Hitachi's? Todd
  15. Boy I would just replace it with a used one.I can't imagine the price of a rebuild. A good used tranny should go for many many miles...I have some Subaru tranny specs from your year.I'll did it up and see if there is any info on gear replacement... You working on Reagan's Brat? haha And again I would just find a good used one and it should last for years....
  16. I have had to "calk" in a window or two. They will come loose from the frame.I have a 78 Brat(My first Subaru) in the field.I could send a picture or two if that would help?
  17. So ,There is going to be a world record attempt at the longest Subaru Parade. It is now held by the Russians with 575 I think.Right around there. So on June 5th in Birch Bay,Washington we will try and show them all how much we love our Subarus !! Amen ? Birch bay is About a hour north of Seattle right off I - 5 .There is a registration ect..Come on up and make a stand !! haha This should be fun....see you there, todd I will find more info and post it.i had a link but lost it !!
  18. Cool this should be fun.As far as having different emblems on my brat...well.....One side says BMW the other its a Alfa Romera sp?I like to keep them guessing.... I rebuilt it back in 1995 and after my daughter got rear ended and they junked it ,well its been a work in progress.Been all over and still runs great. My summer daily driver, It was even voted best brat at WSCC 16 !! i love it
  19. If all else fails..I mounted a GPS deal ,a TomTom trip finder thing. It has a working speedometer in it..Funky but when a cops behind you and you have no idea how fast your going, its nice to have.my brat had something broken inside the tranny so instead of tearing that down the TomTom was a nice fix.Good luck
  20. Is this posted in a good spot so everyone will see it??
  21. Well EXCUSE ME !!!!! I thought it was a good JOKE !!! I also do not have a V10 in there either... See you there......
  22. And why did the oil pan leak? Also the oil pick tube up was more than half covered with small pieces of calking. That is what I love about Subaru's.... So durable and forgiving.... Nice Ride man !PS notice the oblong bolt holes ? tweekers i bet..lots of oddball "repairs".... It looks like someone just wanted to use the old gasket and loaded it up with dope and hoped for the best....Hey it made sense at the time haha !
  23. So I looked it up AND they want 10 bucks to sign in and so much more for passengers ?? hmmmm.I asked if we could get a group discount.I will let you know.this sounds like fun.... I have 4 I could bring...Todd
