  1. I fix a smoke problem with a PVC? valve....From the dealer..The store bought (NAPA) didn't fix it but one from the Subaru Dealer did.....It had the right size hole I was told..And after sitting that long I would just keep it full of clean oil and see what happens. Some rigs just need to be drivin to get the blood flowing haha.Good luck.
  2. Yes ,The Guennis Book of Worlds Record is looking to beat the Russian parade record of 539 ? How many Subaru's will come Birch Bay this June 5th, I think it is........ Will we bring some Subarus ?????? Why YES I will.I will bring my 5.....How many more will be there? This should be COOL !!! Check it out..Todd
  3. could it be the tires are just too big and its pushing the engine too hard? Like if its worn out some and it dosn't have enough "ommph" to push the tires.Like you said the MPG went down after the tires. Or swap back to some stock tires and see what up?? I just turned 60 so I gave up on big wide tires awhile back.. haha. I do run tall skinny 14" on my 84 brat and seem to get decent MPG. altho I have never done the math yet so I'm really just guessing ,I guess... Good luck Todd PS I just reread your note and you are running a ea 71? Now thats a 1600 right ?? Mabey the 1600 dosn't have that Ommph I was talkin about.... If its a 1600 the starter is right on top of the bell housing... Hang on...
  4. Hey Naru... You were right .I thought the slop in the butterfly valve was causing the fast idle. No...It was the linkage behind the choke housing.....Cleaned it good and light oil and Bingo....all is well. and once again..Thanks to all, todd
  5. Well to all you folks loosing sleep thinking about my wierd carberator problems..... You can sleep tonight..after checking this and that it turned out that the butterfly valve is loose in the carb, I was checking for leaks with carb cleaner and I sprayed some on the side of it and Bingo..started to stumble. I tried to rock it up n down and sure enough it had freeplay... so unless i can find a new hatachi for $250 bucks I guess i'll be doing a weber soon. Thanks again for all the imput,Todd
  6. Now on the flip side I have heard that you can install 1800 pushrod engins as well.. Other than being somewhat under powered is that a workable swap? i have a low mile 88 gl at my sons in Colorado with blown headgasket or worse. we cooked it going up a long pass in 100 degree heat. I am considering my options for this spring when I hope to bring it home..
  7. Hey Djell,Good advice to anyone lookin to get a "new" Subaru. The only other tip I can pass along is....Ask why they are selling it? and be lookin at there eyes when you ask....Do they look down or away or do they look you in the eye as they explane why they don't want it any more..That has always helped me when lookin at any car.. So good luck and let us know what u got..have fun Chris.... c ya OSF
  8. One of the things I have seen go bad with turbo's is the vacuume hoses get hard and break causing trouble. Now I heard that the hoses get bad cause the Turbo's run so hot they cook the hoses..True/False ?? I'm sure there are some good Turbo's out there its just I haven't seen too many of them.. Anyway Chris ,keep doing your homework and be paient. You know as soon as you buy one you will see them all over... Oh compression tests aren't too hard. You just have to remove the spark plugs and insert the compression tester. Then while a friend turnes the engine over you mark down the compression after say 6-10 revolutions.I'd like to hear if I'm doing it wrong...could be...anyway once you get all 4 readings.they should all be close to the same..One low, burn't valve,2 low on the same side...head gasket... all low...worn engine...I don't know for sure how high it should read ..150 psi seems to ring a bell. Its been a while... Read up on it ..You'll get it figured out....have fun Todd OSF
  9. Call it a day. the more you mess with something,The more you need to mess with something. It seems that a lot of those engines leaked some from the heads.if its not too bad ,keep an eye on it and "Just roll w/it" haha. You got a good one with low miles, have fun w/ it..Keep it full of oil and don't overheat it and it should last for years ...no lie....Todd
  10. Hey wait a minute now..... haha...I say Amen to all that but the single piont fuel injection is spossed to be one of the best made.I have had more than a few and never had one go bad...ever. But then again the hitachi's are a good carb if all is working and a weber is a easy swap as well...I agree with you that simple is better...I honestly think the 88's are the last of the good ones. take your time and get a good one..u will be happy.. ..Hey good to hear from New Zealand....
  11. Never really seen a turbo that lasted....They seem to be frail compared to the non-turbo's.. Stick to the non turbo's ,They will last longer and i don't think that turbo's are that much faster...mabey ,I never rode in one that really was really tight, seemed something was always off...Just my 2 bits worth,Todd
  12. My fav is a 1988 gl wagon with single point fuel injection and 4x4 w/ Hi /Lo range.i think that 88's were the last year for hi/lo right? Not sure how big of tires you can go with.I like tall skinny road tires, esespesily in dry terain (man i can't spell) turbo's are frail and are not too reliable.. I like cruze control for road trips...Do a compression test if you can so u will be sure the heads arn't cracked, that happens...anyway WELCOM to the tribe...You picked a good machine and they will do you well, just keep her full of oil and don't overheat it and it will last you for YEARS !!!! have fun over on the east side I love it over there ,Todd Ps Putting on a lift will just cause trouble down the road.....Just some good tall 13's will be fine...Hey I know lots of folks like to lift there Subarus and thats cool but I always say"the more you modifi ,The more you have to modifi....Keep her stock and you will have one less thing to worry about
  13. That would be great. I have never been to hot on these "New Fangled Carberators"..Other than RxR..I know webers and old school one barrels.... so yea any pictures would be cool, thanks,Todd
  14. I may go that route but for now....I have a vacuume guage on my dash and it reads the same, 22 weather it was idleing at 700 RPM's or 2,200 RPM's and i can't turn the idle down by turning the throttle back. Its solid,so I'm thinking the linkage is jammed somewhere. I need to take off the air cleaner and see what could be holding it back...hey thanks for the info...I'll be back....
  15. Hey Gang,I have a 83 Brat with a Hitachi carb and 150,000 miles. So all has been well till a month ago it started to have a high idle once it warmed up,like 2,200 RPM's. I cleaned and oiled all the linkage and that helped some.It now goes between 600 RPM's and 2,200 RPM's. More than once after going 10 miles it will drop to 6 or 700 at a stop.Today I drove it 3 miles to the store..High idle ,drove back home still high.I opened the hood and tryed to manualy turn the throttle back but no go.something is holding it high..the cable has play in it so that should be ok,must be linkage related..any thoughts? thanks ,Todd
  16. Sat 15 years and started with just a hot battery and fresh gas !!! i love 'em,,,best machine on the road !!
  17. 4 to 6 Grand?? Wow, Where can I sell mine.Sorry but that seems pretty steep... If the body and intrior was mint and i was rich, i might got for a $1000.So many folks think that there brats are worth so much but when it boils down to it... not so much. I mean If you had a really clean, stock, low mile brat ,even then I've never seen one go for over a 3 grand. But anyway, too bad the guy was so greedy.those little 1600 4x4's brats were bullet proof. That was my first 4x4 subaru 20 some years ago.. Great gas milage and would go any where. We used to do the motorcycle trails with em ..I have never seen a rebuilt Subaru engine in all the years I have been messing with them.We were going to rebuild one but when we looked up all the cost ,we figures it was easer to just get a used engine or the 40,000 mile import engines that were around years ago.I so wish I would have bought a dozen or so,Nice stash....So If you do get it and get a good engine in it you WILL have a 4x4 that will last you for years....keep lookin, the right one will come along for you,You'll be glad you got it...,Todd. PS 5 or 6 hundred might be a fair deal,If all was persentable.. PPSS sorry I didn't look to see where you called home,L.A......mabey a grand is fair haha,Hey whats fair in LA....I bet not many subaru 4x4's are down your way, thus driving up the price...still its only where two fools met,One to offer the price...the other to pay it.... haha oh how I love your sunshine !!!
  18. Thanks for the info.. if It was my runner i'd probley use a e82 as i have a few of those around and can change them in a heart beat. But being its my girls car..I'll go with the Re-Man from uckatan....the e81's distributors are lookin sparce now.I always have had one with me in my brat or wagon as they can go out at any time and its a fast fix. So once i get my daughters rig up n running i will be lookin for a extra or 2. Her dist needs a bushing, may replace that but for all the work of opening it up i should replace all I can.. Are they a hard fix?
  19. Well i was hopeing someone would have comformed what i have been taught about Gen 2 distributors..That is the 2 wd and the 4wd are different brands but are interchangable. Also i have heard that the 4wd dist were the better made of the two,but the 2wd had more pep??...And i found lots of them on E Bay,anywhere from $135.00 to $450.00 !!! for the same part.. So i'm going for the 4x4 dist for $198.00 w/ free dilevery. They also have just the bushing for $25 bucks.Thats whats wrong with my rig but may as well "Go to town" and get a re-man... ..
  20. Hello Gang..well my daughters wagon needs a new dist. You can feel the grinding when you feel it while its running...So i called Napa,A.Z. and O'nellys...All Gone !! So i looked on e Bay.They had more than a few. 31-810 was the cheaper one $130.00 to $185.00.It didn't show the power plug in,I'm guessing that its a male/female set up.mine has the eye holes to "bolt it on" so to speak, Then 31-318 showed pictures of the eye holes but they were way more $$.. So as i remember the 2 are the same as far as far as both will fit,the hook up is the only thing different...right?? I also remember some guys changed the 4wd dist to the 2wd distributor hopeing to get mere power...right??? Anyway the million dollor question is ........ Can i use the cheaper 2wd dist 31-810 instead of the 31-812 ?? Thanks again,Todd(the old sub freak)
  21. Way 2 go.....so far so good......time will tell. I bet you will be fine....The Green Hornet will keep buzzin
