Hey your dealin with a dealer....Cash talks and you know the rest..If you have 2 grand and really like it...GO FOR IT !!! You can always save up $2000 but finding a stash Subaru like this one.....not to often...He probley got it on a trade in and just want to make some fast cash. Your dealing with a dealer, play the game. You have the cash so you are bound to win..haha... Hey it all depends on how much he needs the cash...if hes hurtin ,mabey $1500 will work. But if hes got money in his pocket .....have fun dickering with him.. Go in on a monday, that seems to be there slowest day...Good luck, and if you really want it ...DO IT...Your cash an't nothin but trash...haha...Todd OSF -
Then do a compression test. That will tell the story.I have had had backfireing so bad i thought it was going to blow a headgasket or something!!! sounds like gunfire !!.Yea, check your timing and then do a compression check. that is why I like subs so much, they WILL take this kind of stuff and keep going. But Hey, keep the oil level up or all bets are off.lack of oil will ALWAYS ruin your engine...It took me just one to learn my lesson.I buy oil by the case..its so cheap compared to a new engine!!!

A 1600 will have a turquoise color valve cover...I think..I do know its a different color than a 1800.But on a 1600 set up the starter is on top of the bell housing ,where a 1800 is off to the side say 200pm....I have never had a rebuilt engine yet.. i have always had good luck just finding a good used 1600 engine(take a compression check) and re-seal it ,re do the oil pump, ect.I call it a "full monty"...and they usually will last for years and cost less too.. The cool thing about the 1600 is with a good Hitachi??sp carb you WILL get great gas mileage.Way better than a 1800..As far as parts I prefer NAPA but they all should be able to get parts for you.Have fun with it.My first Subaru was a 1980 brat .It lasted through me,then my son and then it went to his friend. It finally rusted out. Yours should last for years to come .....C ya,Todd,OSF -
Mice... Why did it have to be mice
old sub freak replied to Ofeargall's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All this and deadly too.Not a lie !! A young guy in his 20's died from breathing mouse "dust" here in Skagit County a few years back.Sad but true..Thats why I use bleach at 50/50 w/water and wear a dust mask or at least a bandana when workin around that stuff.. Seriously ,He was doing some demolition work and inhaled some mouse stuff and it killed him....Man !!!...If it's not one thing, it's another....I use brass screen to block off the vents between the windshield wipers. That's helped the most for me and things mice don't like to smell that I have left laying around in my Subarus...I have gone as far as keeping all the extra fur I have gathered from brushing my cat.Seriously....I stuffed it in an old sock and stuck it up near the heater fan area..You would think mice would stay away from that smell?? hey whatever works...right? Hang on,Todd the OSF -
Well mabey the raised letters are not "in styly"any more.It seems that last time i was at les schwabs they had some on display. But they sure had the "Wagon Wheels" all over.the 17-20 "chrome spoked mags with super thin tires. They are like 2 " tall..Not my cup of tea but hey ....The wagon wheels do have a bit of coolness.... Mabey some old car magizines might have adds for "old school" raised letter tires... keep lookin ,you'll find them....
-
I prefer tall road tires. The reason is there quiet on the road and are easyer to keep in alinement(I think). You don't get that freeway buzz/woble...and as far as off roading goes ,they do as well as deep lug swamper tires as long as you stay away from deep mud...Hey, I'm ok with that..They will do great on any dry road..Just my 2 bits worth OSF

Hey isn't this what "air fresheners" are for? haha or insence???. Thats all part of livin up here is the Great North Wet !!!(West) Mice n trees and oh yea mold.....and summers that lasts 2 months..Wow!! sorry for being so blunt !!! I have one brat that has been smittin by mouse pee and bleach does "clear the air" so to speak....I had a friend who was trying to mouse proof his 3 car garage so no mice could get in.I told him that was impossible and so he put 10? mouse traps in his sunbeam sports car...and like others have said you must check the "trap line"daily or you defeet the purpuse..Anyway us Northwesterns must learn to live with all the wildlife up this way..Damn Nature.... Mice... Why did it have to be mice
old sub freak replied to Ofeargall's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I too did a study on how to get mice/rats out of my cars. One story said that you will never catch all the field mice that come around and that you need to make the car smell bad to the mouse....Hmmm... they said pepermint worked and they sell some herb concoction that is spossed to work great.its sold for RV's ect.well that makes sence to me.i have tried to catch them all and they keep coming back.I tried a urinal block in a brat i parked for the winter.hey it smells better than mouse pee...and so far no sign of mice...I'll see if I can find that RV stuff.Sounds like the way to go,making it "unfit"for the mice..haha....C ya,OSF -
Cleaning EA82 Interior
old sub freak replied to subi dude's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My favorite is "Awesome" from the dollar store...You can thin it to 50/50 and it still works good...for rubbed in dirt, ect I use it srtaight. I think the best trick for mold ect.is to mist down everything soap and then shut the doors on a sunny day..Let it "cook"for a hour or so and then just wipe it off,Works great... well thats my 2 bits worth..OSF Has anyone found the trick to get rid of the "mouse smell" from leaving your Subaru in the barn?? It seems that they really like the heater and fan area..So when you turn on the defrost...EUUUUUU stink !! I just get in there with a soapy rag with long handled neddle nose plyers and hope for the best. After all I have read "they" say the best way to keep mice out is to make a smell that mice don't like..Like mint is spossed to work.i had some urineal blocks that I tried. So far so good.Hey it smells better than mice pee.haha and it goes away in a day or so... -

Vague issue on GL not running
old sub freak replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Boy that would be a really plugged fuel filter.I have pulled them off when the car started serging on the freeway and couldn't even blow through it !!! I was impressed that it even ran being that plugged.could it be a bent or colasped fuel line?? I had an old Studebaker years ago and it too had fuel issues. We tryed everything and I mean everything. It turned out that when i used a too small fuel line I had laying around , it cut a little flap on the inside of the line when I forced it on.so when it started it would run great ,then the fuel passing through would close the flap and the engine would die...Man talk about frustrating. It was dumb luck that we even saw the flap in there.changed the fuel line and bango, she purred. They had sweet running flathead 6's with over drive.real basic though, oil filters were an option !!,the oil seals were felt as I remember. Then in the 60's they went to modern ones like they have now. sorry for vering off subject.. Take off the fuel filter and clean it off and give it the breath test. does that year have two fuel filters like some of the ea81?? one by the tank and one on the fire wall. I seen that a few times and the one by the tank was forgoten about and plugged solid but still ran but surged.... good luck ,having your work rig down is no fun -

So speaking of oil and such does anyone use ProLong oil treatment? I don't use it alot but after watching there infomercial when they treat the engine with it and then take off the oil pan and drive around southern California. ??? When I saw the film clip of the 4 banger engine running without any oil pan I thought its either a blantent lie or this stuff really works???? so I gave it a shot.I surley don't use it everytime I change my oil, cause at $20 bucks a pop that would sure add up. So what do you all think?? Snake oil or something that can really help your engine?? Anyway It does make me feel better HaHa OSF Oh and PS if you haven't taken a close look at my picture over there,Its a guy holding a dipstick.Under that is says"The dipstick tells the story" How true that is !!! I got it from a vintage oil filter box from the 30's? Altho I don't think oil filters were even populal then..hmmm mabey the 1940's??? either way i sure like it -

Well Misfit I'm 6'3" and I'm ok with it .i sleep corner to corner without any complaints. In a different Brat I made a plywood deck that was even with the top of the wheelwells. My wife and I slept in the back on a few roadtrips and was fine with it.i did bump my head a few times though... Anyway I think I solved the heating problem w/o too much work or $$...Can't wait to try it...OSF -

JesZek,Thank you for the info...You can't argue with "consistent data".They really showed who had the best synthetic oil.Is there a test like that for regular oil?? Would be very interesting...Well thanks again. Now what about oil filters????I know the orange ones are not as good as a regular napa filter. So just to be sure i use napa Gold. I feel better that way HaHa..If you have seen cut open filters they sometimes have on display you can see who has the better filter... So thanks again for the rap on oil..c ya todd -

I was taught the best oil to run in your car is CLEAN OIL !!!!!!! But other than that I use napa 20/50 for years.Napa oil is made by Valvilene sp? That was what I was told is the best for the EA81 engine (the 20/50wt, not Valvilean) so I carried it over. But then I was told that the 20/50 wasn't good for the Ea82 for a reason i don't remember...So just out of habit I'm stickin to 20/50.I did start buying Castrol at WM. I have been told that Castrol is one of the best oils made ,any thoughts?? ,Its $15 something for 5 qts.You can jam in the back door and beat the crowds.. I got tired of all the little blue bottels going to the landfill.so now its big white ones ....haha. but not as many...I have a few napa emptys I refill and carry in the rigs....So what do the "Teaming Millions" say?......But I still say the best oil is Clean Oil !! ....OSF -

the dash shot shows the defrost "reflector" or "deflector" hmmm I think its a deflector.... Without the defrost tubing it needs help.,This R/B can keeps the windshield clear..I love it !!!..http--,,--//Thanks ,But the hole can be covered easly and I know its a crazy idea but I believe in "Fuction before fashion !!!When i'm on the road there is stuff all over the front seat so it won't stick out too bad. Man it throws out the heat....heres the back view.and like I said when its not needed i can easly remove it and put everything back as is...well other than the hole.and i always say "If someone sees that hole ....there lookin too close haha http--,,--// -
