chemical treatment for heater core
old sub freak replied to djellum's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey Rothell,Yes thats the thing right there..I would have thought it was a dealer item..So I think thats my problem then.No 1st or 2nd on the heater fan.. As far as pulling the heater core in 45 minutes..I would bet its the surgical method of removal...But then again,if a guy knows his stuff mabey he can open her up that fast.I always use a dremmal tool and do surgery...OSF Oh and Ivans,Good work on the heater cores.I used to do soder repairs on American rigs growing up.It seemed that they had more "meat "to work with.Way back i tried to repair a Subaru radeator and it just fell apart.I couldn't keep the heat from spreading and that was that. Now, lookin back we used a full sized torch... Do you use a small one? -
ea82 gl wagon issues, wont start or run
old sub freak replied to SubyGl's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well in my experance the fuel pumps seem to last forever. Its usually the wireing. Now on the e81's there is what people have called a "roll over relay",Its right above the hood release on the left side of the cab.small thing about the size of 1/2 of a pack of smokes..I have replaced this a few times and even hotwired one and drove it home. They call it a "roll over relay" cause in the event of a rollover it shuts off the fuel pump..Now this is stiff I have just heard... so hang on..you'll get it !! ps have you tried a little gas in the carb or starting fulid? that will tell you if it is a fuel problem or something different..C ya,OSF -

Is the fan resister the little thing with 3 wire coils in it at the bottom of the feater fan box? Kinda thing ???Thanks OSF:banana: -
Hey SB ,Well most cruise control set ups use vacuume to move that little chain.I'm guessing pieces are missing??? Is there any cruise control buttons or switches in the cab? I've seen them on the trurn signal rod..Might be someone took your carb off a different rig mabey??Hope you get it going.I am going to install a CC set up from Austraila.Got it on line for 300 smackers...Have yet to install it but will soon..Makes long drives so much better.. Good luck and let me know what you found out.OSF:banana:.

Check your fuses with a test light.I have seen them that looked good ,but they were not..On the e81's I would bet $ on the dist going out.Thats just what happens...nothing ... just like you turned off the key. I once had something like this happen and it was the 4 way flasher fuse was bad...??changed it out and it ran... You just keep lookin, something is bound to fix it.. -

Thats all I have seed done as well.We poured super hot water n soap into the core and then back flushed. that helped...You checked the waterline "temp adjuster thing" on the inside firewall just before the core.I have seen those froze up and had to be opened manualy ,that got the water moving again..Good luck! bad time of the year to be without heat...OSF -

Clutch/Transmission Issue
old sub freak replied to Hitoshi's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
By just guessing i would say that the shaft on the front of the tranny that the throwout bearing is on is gummed up and won't let it slide back and forth.I have put a return spring on the shifting fork so that the clutch would return and that helped alot. You can disconect the hill holder so you know that that is not the problem.Just be sure its in the off postion. Follow the cable from the shifting fork to the other end,by the clutch linkage and you will see the on/off thing..Anyway try a return spring.I can't think of a way to lubracate the throw out bearing shaft without pulling the engine but mabey the return spring will loosin things up??? Mabey ????,I am the hopeless optimust...Take care and good luck OSF -

If you can get to it with a stick or something ,scrap off what you can and then get some J/B liquid weld.I have patched a few things doing just that.Put some J/B on the end of the stick and do what you can.Necessity is the Mother of Invention.Always remember that !! Good luck OSF -

School me on EA81 DUAL-CARB engines
old sub freak replied to backwoodsboy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wow !!! I've been into Subarus for some time and have never seen anything like these's....WOW !! is right..Thank you for posting this stuff...Man they must have screamed !!!!! Well ,I have a duel carb set up on my 84 brat(the thrasher).Years back we were getting the import engines for like $400 bucks and I would go through the line of them with a breaker bar testing the compression by ear on the duel carb engines. They were the same price.I don't remember if I changed the engine out and kept the duel carb set up over the years? How can i tell if the engine is for duel carbs without taking off the intake ??I also remember talking to the guy that sold the import engines and he said the stock import carbs won't work over here(in the USA.I said that i have used the import carbs everytime and they worked fine.(For awhile we were swaping engines like starters..They came with everything carb, distributer ,everything, so all you had to do was drop it in , plug it in and it ran..)He just frowned and looked at his junk pile of import carbs that he had pulled and thrown on the junk pile....I have had the 2 carb set up for at least since 1997 and its still running.I did rebuild one carb 6 years ago..hey i know,I should have done both of them but...It worked and they still run so...??.Now lately i have thought of gettine 2 new hitotchi? carbs for it but I procrastinate. Mabey next summer...So , where is the engine vin # to see if I have a stock duel set up? C ya. OSF:banana: -
Figured something like that. It looked exspearamental...Its a good conversation piece now. Take care n good luck

Cool,Thanks Tom.I'll look into that.I was cleaning up in the shop today and found one of those "pigtail things" ,aka resitor pack, Only someone had replaced the coils with wire, 3 ,One inch pieces soldered in to replace the pigtails...would that work??? and if it did could it screw things up down the road?? I'll try replacing the 4 speed switch and see what that does and leave the fancy Resistor pack on the wall for display..haha..Merry Christmas(if that applys) C ya,Todd:banana: good luck on your project, got to have that heat!!!
-
Hey Tom,I'm having fan trouble on my daughters 1990 DL.It only works on 3 and 4.Now is the mode slector the little pig tail, wire coil thing at the bottom of the heater fan assebbly?I took that out and it seemed ok.I remember a few years back having fan issues and I replaced the broken mode selector,I could see the coil was broken and i think that fixed it...mabey??It was awhile back... Any thoughts? Thanks ,Todd the OSF

Well I didn't read the whole story here but I got the jest is to get good mpg..Right. Well years ago they sold a fancy vacuum guage called a "Mile o metter"I think..anyway as far as I know this was tested and proven to save MPG if used right..I did a "link" called mpg vs rpm's and we all came to the conclusion that running at 4 thousand rpm's got the best mpg.I have 14 inck tires on 2 of my brats and i don't even use 4th gear at almost 70 mph. On long cruses I usually run 3rd gear ,4 thousand rpm at 60-65 mph and got the best milage. Using 4th gear I got lower vacuume and almost was "luggin it" at 70....Now back to the mile o meter. It showed you how to drive using the highest vacuume witch give you the best mpg.. .check out that MPG vs RPM thing, It had lots of info.. Take care and Merry Christmas( If that applys) Todd the Old Subaru Freak:banana:

Take and surgically put a few drops of oil on the shaft and you can get many more miles out of it. I used a syringe and gave it a "main line shot" haha ..oh the good old days...

Dual Carb EA-81 Build
old sub freak replied to Markus56's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey Mark, Having any luck? During the warm weather the "Trasher" would start every time without the choke.Mine has a manual choke setup.Well now that warm weather is just a memory....Its getting harder to start, very hard. Most cars with a manual choke have a pattern to get it started. Pull all the way out and then 2 pumps or something like that..I can't find that with mine. Its like full choke and pump like crazy then push it in a little and hope it catches....and then pray it keeps running as it warms up. so I'm thinking its a fuel problem cause it starts right up when its warm ,by the sun or just by running. All I have ever done to adjust the carbs was just adjust one ...then the other one...And it seems to be ok..till now.You know mabey i just need a tune up or a hotter coil.Is there such a thing? So Mark ,good luck over there in Big Sky Country hope all is well -
Heater mystery solved! (I hope)
old sub freak replied to jonas's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Down on the drivers side ,above the heater core is a semi horizontal rod ,1/8" or less. The end towards the seats clips onto a plastic thing. The other end (towards the firewall) controls a 4 inch square flap that will let the air move where it is spossed to..Boy I hope this makes sence.I had a similar problem and i happen to stumble on that flap not moving.I think the threaded end that pops into the plastic thing was "unpoped"haha.and not holding the flap where it should be.I fixed mine by using a zip tie to hold it open..hmmm so mabey the plastic was broken or i would have just snaped it in....Hey I was a few years ago...One good thing to have around is a "Cadaver" heater...the whole deal.I kept one and it is a gold mine when you come up against what is happening here..You can see what everything is spossed to do. Anyway I hope some of this makes sence and you get some heat!!!Hang on,you must be close!!
