Guide for selecting a junk yard EA-82 engine
old sub freak replied to BlackBoot's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You know with all the plugs pulled mabey you could use a portable drill battery and just play dumb if they make a deal of using a battery in the yard? i wonder what problem lead to that rule? Politics I bet!! haha Or like others have said shake the dice and hope a goiod one comes up.They will give you a different motor but won't compensate for all your labor so .... take your time, Its only time and money.... haha:banana: -
Guide for selecting a junk yard EA-82 engine
old sub freak replied to BlackBoot's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A few years back I was looking for a good E82 engine.I packed in my 12 volt battery and used it to turn the engine over for a good compression test.It worked great. As i remember we jumped the starter with a screwdriver as the ignition was messed up.That was the only way I could figure how to really test a engine. We tested 2 of them and took the one with the best compression..the other one would have been ok,but one was defintly better......On the starter celinoid? you jump from the male "tang"? to the nut that holds the starter cable on. I think? Anyway take your time and don't rush through it.Picking a good engine from anywhere is risky at best. The engine i got is still running after many, many, many miles. I did the "full monty"on it.That involves replacing all the oil seals and re doing the oil pump seals and the water pump.Sure its a gamble BUT.... life is that way...Good luck and look before you leap... PS doing the thinking thing helps too. was it running when it was brought in? like it was cracked up and thats why it was junked? or does the body look mint and you can only guess why it ended up there... Have fun!! -

The rocker panels are right under the doors and yes they are good..the first 2 had rust there. All 3 were stored in the worst possible place...But I think with some $ and labor 2 of them will be keepers. The 82 with the 3rd eye Has the worst rust of them all. There is a couple of 1 inch holes IN THE ROOF !!! the bolts that hold the roof rack are rusted through and then some... But i think with some duct tape and paint it will be fine..haha I will be working on the drive trains and then see what can be done with the body. The 83 and 84 are running good and should just do better with new filters and "messin with 'em" My favorite pass time...So I will do a update in time. Thanks,Todd -
What interior stuff do you need? the White ,seats and door pannels are there, but the front passenger was gone..I didn't look too close as we were busy with the other rig.But let me know what you need ok..c ya http://imageshack.us/a/img546/1175/petina.jpg[/img][/img].. the doors were rusted? shut and I couldn't get them open.I'll try again if you want some of it...

Heater mystery solved! (I hope)
old sub freak replied to jonas's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You know down by the drivers right foot is the thing that adjusts the heater core temp. Its a piston thing that regulates how much coolant that can flow through.I have seen those stuck in the cool position and with some oil and mussel work got it opened all the way. That helped alot.and there is a 1/8 horizantal rod down there that came loose causing a flap to not open and that too has "pulled a rabbit out of the hat" and got the heat back.I have a junked heater box thing that is great to study when heaters go bad...Have you just tried to see if one of the tubes going to the heater core is warmer than the other. That would tell you your flow was restricted.... Good luck ,stick with it......winters a coming!!!! when all else fails break down and get a new core......well worth the cash!! -

Hey Bennie,Well I fiannaly got to go get the 1982 GL Wagon with the coveted 3rd eye from the forest in the Great Northwet(west).. And it shows.More rust than i was hopeing for but not terminal... We couldn't try and start it cause the starter was gone.So With the help of a old friend we towed it home, about 10 miles, down hill with iffy breaks. You know as i get older i realize.....I should have used a towbar.I was sweatin it most of the way home and praying "all goes well"..It did...Thank God!! The breaks at the peddle were almost nill and the e-brake was a little better. I hate to think if i would have had to make a panic stop..Well live and learn.I should have taken the time to do it safely..next time...Anyway The yellow 84 is cleaning up niceley as well as the green GL10(no pictures yet) I am going to pull all the carpet from them as they are "really funkey smellin".I think that and a good inside scrubbin and some new carpet are in order...so I have my work to do.But you know ....i love this...taking someones junk and making it cool again...very satisfying for me..."Idle hands are tools of the devil!!" haha[/img] well i so hope the pictures work. I'm learning all the "fancy stuff!!" Oh and the moss shot is the 1974 wagon being called back to Mother Earth -
I bet your heater core is somewhat pluged. The simptom I remember was that you could turn the fan on and have great heat, but then in a few minutes.....brrrr it starts blowing out "trepid" heat... the fan must cool off everything till the heater core is cool, thus cool air..Oh I don't know for sure but if it gets cold enough it will have to be addressed.....Take care

There is a whole link(I guess thats the word") that talks about "The Tick". Pages of why and what folks have done to fix it.I think the best was just turn up your tunes..haha It works...

Very good!! so did you get a Gates or the stant? or?? Well I learned alot about thermostats. Its something I never really thought much about I guess,But now I know!! I'll never look at them the same again!! Hahaha The pictures sure showed that the Gates to be the better one.Even the spring looked better..Happy Trails..PS Sometime the temp guages can be off some. But as long as you are good and warm....and not overheaten...Hey!! life is good....

You know there is a easer way to replace the core besides taking the dash out, ect....I have done this on quiet a few brats.Working on the drivers side down by the gas pedal I took my dremal tool and after unhooking all the plumbing, temp comtrol switch ect.I cut away the plastic "face"that held in the core.Once that was removed I gently pulled the core out ,like a radio or something.Cleaned any leaves ,ect ,then smothed any sharp or ruff edges and slid in the new core.Installed a few zip ties and some caulking and bingo....bring on the snow!!! This way I saved hours of work and in my eyes did a good job...I didn't replace the temp adjuster as it got banged up removing it.Come summer i just put it on defrost or even clamped one hose closed to keep me cool...Just my 2 bits worth...stay warm,Toddnick -
Ok as long as we are on the subject...What is the little "Tickler" for and where should it be put when installed? Front or back.As I remember it goes to the front of the car..I think?? Yea The Tickler...That is what I have heard it called...the little bb sized thing that rattles around on top of the disc....Any thoughts and what do you call it? toddnickl

You sure it unstalled right? i still have to double check to make sure i do it right? No offence OK? If your heater works fine when the temp is higher than the Heater core is fine....Hmmm For the price of a new thermastat,I would try that just to be sure that is not it...Did the last thermastat come from O'nelleys?? I quit going there years ago because of issures like this. Some stores just sell cheap stuff and you do get what you pay for...so .....find out why the temp fluctuates and I think you will have it...Live and Learn...right?

Feel the hoses to your heater core. One hotter than the other? I have seen the "temp switch"(the thing that regulates the water flow into the heater core)frozen and had to work it loose.Or the core is pulged. You can try and flush it out by undoing the hoses on the engine side of the firewall and running water one way then the other.Guys have loaded it up with radeator flush and let it sit awhile, then flush it out.I tried that only to have it leak later. The way i have found to rule out a plugged core is that with the car warmed up you turn on the heater fan and warm or hot air blasts out ,but then get "trepid" or lukewarm ,then almost cool and you end up turning off the fan and just shivering..yep,cores plugged!!....my favorite trick to replace the heater core is instead of pulling the dash and all that I used a dremmel tool and cut away the plastic "face "that keeps the core in the heater.i worked on the drivers side where the 2 brass tubes come out of the heater. anyway once you cut away the plastic you can slide the core out like a radio or something.Once the core is out you can clean out any leaves and such then slide in your new core ad a few zip ties and some calking and your ready to face the cold!!! sorry for carrying on so,but I have done this on a few of my E82's and it saved me hours of labor..It seems that the cores were around $80 bucks at napa, now that was a while back.Good luck and stay warm.Toddnick.

Good !! I never straightened mine out.... other than correcting any "dog walkin" that came from the wreck. So you have plans for keeping it on the road? You know as long as the drivetrain is ok keep her going. Some backyard frame straightening and you never know..Flat paint will hide lots of dings and creases..Be creative, you got nothing to loose by trying to straightening it out..I spose it takes a special kind of guy to be happy driving a beater in the worlds eyes..haha. Just have fun with it and make the best of it.....

Hey Now !!My Daughter was rear ended in my brat in 1995..I straightened it out with a cheery picker and a sledge hammer..This is no lie.. Then took it to Les Schwabs and had everything straightened out(and yes they laughed at me)...Well it is still running and is my daily driver. The odometer broke in 98 at 250,000 on her. Its been all over the west coast and east to Montana..When I can't shut the door from rust I might think about "putting her down".So don't ever give up on a subaru!! They will go forever with minimumn labor...I love it.. So glad your doing OK,You know you can't get blood out of a turnup. His day will come ,just be thankful you were,nt really busted up!!Life can always be worse....http://img547.imageshack.us/img547/423/killercarbs003.jpg http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/9940/thethrasher.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img831/8328/ing016.jpg Anyway It didn't hurt that i had just put a import engine and clucth just before the accident.I took off the"Killer Carbs" and replaced them with a cool air scoop. Its my Auxiliary Transmition Cooler... So that's the thoughts from this old man!! Never Give Up on a Subaru !!!

Man ..That looks like a industrail hair dryer !!Hmmm, mabey one of those to warm things up in the morning..I usually sleep with a window opened a little.I have left the t-top open to the first stop and then with the rear window open that seemed to work the best. But depending how cold it is I may button her up and just open a window in the AM..The electric blanket would work good but the expence to get it there would more that I want to spend on this project.Every time I turn on the defrost I think how hot it is coming out and how cheaply I could get into the backroom...I have covered the floor with blue foam camping pads and a 8"Goose down comforter I got at a second hand store in Palm Springs to make it comfey.I'll keep you all posted how this project plays out...Happy Trails,Toddnick -
