Email sent but figured i'd write it here as well in case you didn't get it. In Arizona but travel to CO and have friends up that way that could pick stuff up for me. Shipping would be to 85745. Have a 78 that I'm trying to get up and going. Windshield Rear tailgate hydraulic Drivers side quarter panel belt driven cooling fan, it's the fan that is hooked up to the belt and the radiator, 4 small bolts hold it in. If you take off the air filter you can get in there and take it off without much effort. brush guard, doubt that is just lying around though roof rack I think that's it for now. Email me back at david.j.stancil@gmail.com. Check your inbox though as I did send you an email to you earlier this week. Thanks. -Dave

Hope so, I've had this 78 for about 6 months now and am finally done with the job that has kept me out in the field for the last 6 months. Now I'm ready to get this thing on the damn road and hopefully win the heart of my girlfriend. She was against the purchase from the get-go but I think eventually she'll come around. Ha.

Anyone ever put a fuel cell into an old Soob Wagon? Have a 78 that the gas tank is shot on. Found an original replacement but it's going to cost me 350$. An 8 gallon stainless steel is only going to cost 150. This is what I'm looking at: http://www.mooreparts.com/store/product/5389/TKS833/ I've never installed a fuel cell before but I would imagine it couldn't be that difficult. The current tank is out and I'm curious if anyone knows if the stock fuel pump would draw the fuel from a tank such as this if mounted where the existing fuel tank is located. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Is that 78 still in the junkyard? I've got a 78 that I'm restoring and could use a few parts. Going to think about that glove box and grill. Neither of mine are busted but it never hurts to have extra parts. Email me at david.j.stancil@gmail.com if you know that that wagon is still around and I can email you a list of parts to see if you'd be able to pull or send me some pics of her. Thanks.

Hi guys. I realize there is a wealth of knowledge on this board and after scouring I haven't found the answer and hopefully it's not right in my face. I have a 78 wagon 4wd and would like to know how to tell if it is a Cali or non Cali model. The badge under the hood is faded but I do have a Vin I could give if that would help. I'm hoping and assuming there is some way of finding out. Any help would be great.

Todd, not a new gas tank. It would be some kind of reroute to a fuel cell if I can't fix this one or find a used one. If there are new ones... man wouldn't that save me time. Literally this is all that is keeping me from driving her. I think.

Arizona Find: 78' Subaru Wagon
Sub78 replied to Sub78's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Well. I was going to try and keep this updated but alas no luck. The interior is ripped out minus the drivers seat. I partially solved my fuel problem. First I thought it was the pump. Pump works. Then I thought the voltage reg. that works. The I blew out the fuel line. That's fine. Finally I just dropped the tank. Found the outlet where the fuel line was connected had some kind of obstruction. Couldn't even get compressed air through it. Question for you guys. Can I just put a nail through the what I'm guessing is just varnish from the gas sitting 10+ years? Or is there some kind of screen at that port. I bypassed the fuel filter and just used a bottle full of gas to get her running. Changed belts and water pump but to my dismay the cooling fan shattered after letting her run and revving her up. Anyone reading this have one of the small 4 bolt 6 inch rough diameter fans? As of right now that's where I stand. Just need to solve the gas tank issue. -
I have a 78 dl wagon that I bought which wasn't getting fuel. Dropped the tank and found the out nipple that connects to the fuel line was clogged. This vehicle had been sitting ten years with fuel in it. The lines been cleared and my question is does anyone know if there is a screen in the inlet or a tube of some kind? Can I just put a nail through what I'm assuming is just accumulated varnish. Not in the mood to drop $$$ on a new tank. Unless someone here has a used one they are looking to unload cheaper than the 350 they want online. Thanks.

Arizona Find: 78' Subaru Wagon

It states I can't post attachments down at the bottom of the page. Any help? I've only been a member for a short time... could that be the issue? -
The beautiful state of Arizona has brought me two things. A new home and unfortunately for my girlfriend the recent (as in 4/18) procurement of a 1978 Subaru GL Wagon 4WD. Now I should start that I have never in my 25 years of life seen one of these, but looking for a new 4cyl daily driver I was fortunate enough to come across this beauty for a firm price of 900$. Now to me this is quite a bit of change but after weighing the pros and cons came to the conclusion that I could let this vehicle go to no one but myself. The Good: little rust, two new rear tires, new battery, I do believe working AC, original motor and trams with 44,000 miles on her. Not sure if she was rolled over 100,000 or not but I bought it from the second owner and he states that they are original miles. Based on the little wear on the vehicle I want to believe him. Am able to start her with starting fluid. She looks pretty as sin. The Bad: electrical gremlin found today. No fuel from the pump and after removal found no juice to the power supply or a few of the fuses. Needs two new front tires. The Ugly: cracked windshield and the fact that my girlfriend somehow doesn't like this little gem. To continue on with this little rampage I'll go on... I have little vehicle maintenance experience minus basic tune-ups and tire changes. I'm doing this project with little money and a Haynes manual which I'm happy to say that for the first time since its printing in 1987 this copy is now the proud owner of many grease stains after only the first day. I'm looking to make this a daily driver with the help of my Haynes and hopefully some of the generous advice from the folks here on the message board. I'm currently down near the border and if you happen to find yourself this way a classic car who needs some love and endless cold beers await you. Now it's back to the car and one more cold beer because I'm quite positive she's not going to fix herself. I'll post pics as soon as I figure out how. -Dave S.
