Seems like the poster is really getting some good advice in this forum. I agree that probably the best thing to do is..stop...take a step back and try a few simple things. Try resetting the ECU...it's as easy as disconnecting the neg. battery cable for a half hour or so on a saturday morning, reconnecting and taking a drive. If the CEL still comes on...try pulling the codes...It could be any number of things, some of them MIGHT have occurred at the Lube place..but some of the things might be normal wear and tear things that by pure COINCIDENCE happened at the time of oil change. I would try the simple things first. Hope this helps. Ed

Hi. Anyone have any recommendations/links/suggestions for putting a CD player in my 98 Legacy? I don't need anything fancy. Just looking for a fairly simple to install model so I can listen to CD's during long commutes. Anyone have any success or like a particular brand/model? Any info appreciated. Thanks

Yeah, looks like you're getting a new stereo..The problem with Coke (or any other soda) getting spilled on closed electronic equipment is it's "permanent"! lol No matter how much of it you clean up, there's still enough that dries up. Once the components warm up the stuff gets liquid again, wreaks havoc, then dries up again. Sorry to hear about your Mc-Mis-Hap.

Hi. Just out of curiosity...For those of you who went to a dealer or a mechanic...What did you pay for timing belt/water pump/tensioner/seals package? Did you also get thermostat and upper and lower radiator hoses? I'm in PA, so just trying to get a feel for best package/price deal. Thanks. for the info. - Ed

Congrats on the new wheels Jon. All the best with it...hey it's a Soob, how could it NOT be anything but the best. Sounds like you got a good deal on it. Ahhh, to be young again...Keep up with those payments and don't charge up those credit cards and, in a few years, you'll be in better credit/financial shape than guys TWICE your age. Congrats again. Drive it in good health. - Ed

Yeah, it's fairly easy to fix even if a plastic clip is broken. I repaired some on my 98 Legacy not too long ago with a tube of auto weatherstripping glue I bought at Pep Boys. Just apply a little to the rubber and a little to the frame. Push the rubber back into place then peel it back and let the air hit the adhesive for a few seconds. Push the rubber back into place and you should have a nice tight seal. You can use a little masking tape to hold it in place it's a large section. BTW, use the door on the other side of the car as a reference so you can be sure you're putting the weatherstripping in the right place (if that makes sense). Hope this helps. - Ed

Thanks Syd. I did a little more searching and it turns out Jiffy Lube has a service too. They all call it something different. I'm debating whether to drive the 10 min. to Jiffy Lube or wait til the weather changes and make the hour or so trip to Trexlertown. I've never had a prob. at Jiffy but I keep hearing horror stories. I'll have to sleep on this one.

I just bought a set of Michelin Harmony(s) for my '98 Legacy L sedan and I's recommend them if you're already leaning in the Michelin direction. You can check out reviews at tirerack.com. They get really high scores across the board. I'm on the East Coast too, so the few inches of snow we've been getting here every week or so proved to be no problem. The Michelins really performed well. You can shop around but I think i paid around $88 per tire installed. Hope this helps. Ed

Wiper Arm issue
ejlain replied to AriesG's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Hi Aries. What kind of Sube? Is it the front or rear (if equipped) wipers? Does it seem like the motor is working properly? As far as doing it yourself, It's fairly easy to replace the arm. If you have a Haynes book, it details the process of removing the wiper arm (if you think that's the problem). You just pry off the cover at the base of the arm to expose the nut holding it in place. I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to take it apart and see if you can determine what's keeping it from moving all the way. I'll bet you get a ton of help on this board. Sounds like you've got one of those "do-it-yourself" problems if you're up to it. - Ed -

Hi. I have to admit, that's the most polite way I've ever heard anyone describe getting their car stereo boosted. lol. What kind of Sube? The Haynes manual has some detailed pages for taking the dash components apart and I'm sure someone here can help too. If you have the patience and a free Saturday morning you could do it yourself. - Ed -
Hi. Just got 4 new Michelin Harmony tires installed on my 98 Legacy L AWD. With 4 new tires and a front end alignment, it's like driving a brand new car!! The Michelins really seem to do well in the snow too. Had a few inches here in PA past few days and I was plowing thru it. FWIW, I'd recommend the Harmonies to anyone looking. - Ed

Hi, I've been hearing and reading a lot about this stuff lately. Anyone ever tried it? I was thinking of using it in my 1998 Legacy L sedan (automatic) w/ 101k miles. I'm due for an oil change soon, so I was thinking of using the stuff, letting it clean up what it can (and see if it solves my lifter clicking) and then getting a fresh oil change. I picked up a 16 oz. bottle at Pep Boys. Do I pour it right into the oil fill tube? How much should I use? Can I add to the gas thru the gas tank? Any input is appreciated. Thanks. Ed

Hmm. Were you planning on doing the work yourself? Upper and lower hoses aren't bad, I'd replace the t-stat (they're cheap enough). Have you considered maybe doing the timing belt and water pump while you're at it? If they're original, at 95k they're coming up for replacement soon. Just a thought. - Ed

Hi. I thought I saw this addressed before, but does anyone have info on taking the little windshield wiper fluid sprayers out. The one on the passenger side isn't squirting fluid. The driver's side works fine. I cleaned out the nozzles with a straight pin and took a look at the hose but haven't had a chance to remove it and thoroughly inspect it for blocks or breaks. It doesn't seem to be blocked. I'm assuming the ONE pump feeds both the passenger and driver's side? Is there a certain type of hose i need or can i just run to Pep Boys? Thanks for any help with this minor problem.

Legacy Air bags
ejlain replied to Sweden's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Hi. I just totalled a 1995 Legacy after a young girl made a left turn in front of me and I swerved and slid on the damp street into one of those 4 foot high cement yellow bollards. No one was hurt (well I still ache a little when i think of how my Legacy looked that day). Both airbags went off and I'm not sure if they contributed to it or it was from the impact but the windshield cracked and the rearview mirror fell off. It happened pretty quick and I honestly don't remember being head-deep in airbag but I do know the smell of those airbags is a sickening burnt plastic smell that makes you want to gag. The smoke pretty much filled up the whole car. -
Hi, after my 95 Legacy L (157k) was totalled a few weeks ago, I'm looking for another one. A local dealer has a 1998 L sedan, automatic with 100k miles. My mechanic says it needs 4 new tires, there is a wheel bearring noise and it looks like the timing belt and water pump are original and in need of replacement. I'm not worried about the tires, I'll get those myself but was wondering if anyone knew of a fair price to offer considering the work needed. The body and interior are in very good shape. He has it listed at $5995. What do you think? Thanks for the help! - Ed

Hi, just bought a 1995 Subaru Legacy L sedan (auto) with 155k miles. Runs like a champ and body's in great condition. Had some minor tune-up stuff done to it so far - put in a new battery, new air filter, had the oil changed. The only thing i haven't done is have the transmission fluid changed. Any thoughts on this? A local shop has a deal on a trans. fluid change w/ filter. Do I want to do this or should i just add fluid? I noticed when i park on an incline, it is tough to shift into a gear. Is this an indication of low transmission fluid? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Check Engine help
ejlain replied to a topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Hi, I have a Subaru Legacy L sedan also. Just curious, when did your check engine light come on? After how many miles? I'm at 155k and change. Thanks.
