Subieman, the axles are still up for grabs for whenever you get around to your conversion. Stumpy ended up not needed them. -

The wiring is intimidating at first, but really not that hard to do. The Chilton's manual has good enough wiring diagrams to get you through. The motor will bolt right in, all you have to do is slot the motor mount holes in your crossmember outward about half an inch or less. You can get an adapter plate from me or Mudrat. Mudrat usually sells a flywheel with his kit, whereas I redrill your old flywheel. You could also opt to have a local machine shop redrill your flywheel, or even ovalize the holes in your flywheel with a dremel to bolt up (a lot of people have done this and it works fine believe it or not ). Search for subarino+ej22 That should get you the thread on one of the first swaps that was done... should explain a lot.

With an adapter plate the EJ22 is actually an easier swap than the ER27, because you don't have to deal with relocating your radiator or chopping up your rad. support. And the EJ22 is definitely no slouch for torque. I got this code in my 98 OBS right before my inspection was due a few months ago. I replaced the purge solenoid and it went away. It passed inspection and 500 miles later the CEL came back on. I could replace solenoids and vacuum lines and $300 factory charcoal cans till I'm broke and senile, but guess what... I'm not dealing with it until my next inspection is due. At which time I'll probably just clear the CEL, pass and forget about it again. If you don't need it fixed to pass inspection then I would just leave it. The EVAP system does NOTHING for performance or fuel economy, just cuts down on a percentage of air pollution. For a car with 100K+ miles on it I'm just not gonna worry about it.

Yes the ECU is on the passenger side floor. I just tore apart a 94 imp. recently. This was a 1.8 FWD sedan, but it's probably the same in yours. BTW saw the paint + snorkel in the other thread. Looks sweet!

Don't feel bad, I'm pretty sure the only lifted soob I've ever seen living up here is my own! Unfortunately at the moment the only thing lifting my soob are four jackstands... It's almost completely dissassembled at the moment, but it won't be like that forever, just long enough to do a real deal rust repair + rust proofing job. Just one more big patch in the cargo area and then it's por15 time. Then I can get on with the fun stuff. i.e. EJ22 swap which is like 90% ready to go as soon as I get done f-ing with the d*mn rust Anyway, I'de like to check out Pine Barrens sometime. Not many jeep/soob trails where I live. Everyone here rides ATVs... though my hatch is actually small enough to take some of the ATV/Snowmobile trails. I'm definately more into trail-riding and mudding my sube. Never tried any major rock-crawling. Derrick, do you know any decent pull-a-part yards up here? The only one with old soobs I've been able to find is in hardwick - northeastern VT. Seems most places I call have crushed everything from the Loyales back... So it would be cool to meet-up for a junkyard run sometime if you know of any good ones. Oh and BTW, I've got a 93 legacy wagon (donor car for my EJ22) if you need any parts. Fair enough. Here's one New Yorker (upstate NY anyway) who's gonna try to get more involved... Hey all, my name is Ryan. I live in Mineville, NY (about an hour south of Plattsburgh, 2 hrs. north of Albany). Yes, I am one of the few NE folks that is truly romantic about subes. I've got two hatchbacks. One is a stock cherry VA. hatch I got from another board member over the summer and the other is a lifted/swampered NY rust bucket that is about to get an EJ motor transplant. I've also got an OBS, which is great, but well not quite as unique as a hatchback around here. So anyway, I'm doing the EJ swap on that hatch, and I've gotten tons of info from the board, so as I work on it I'm going to try to share as much as possible, to give back if I can at all... So consider me out of the closet Later Ryan

A Bosch jigsaw and about 4 or 5 bosch blades made for cutting thick aluminum. It took about 2 1/2 hours of cutting with taking several breaks.

I'm putting an EJ motor into an '88 EA81 Hatchback. The hatch has a custom 4" body lift, running 6-lugs and 29" Swamper TSLs. The EJ motor will be a combination of a 2.2 block from a '93 Legacy and 1.8 heads from a '94 Impreza. That combo should give me about an 11:1 compression ratio. I will be using the 1.8 intake, wiring harness, ECU and y-pipe. I'm going to mate the EJ to the stock 4spd D/R from the hatch. I personally believe it to be just as hardy as the vaunted 5spd D/R, but the clutch may be a different story. We'll see. I know someone on the board is running a 4spd with a 150hp+ ER27 with no problems, so I am optimistic. I've finished building my own 1/2" aluminum EJ to EA adapter plate. I haven't modified my flywheel yet, but that should be a cinch. I've stripped and rewired the EJ harness. I will be using the stock hatchback radiator with one or two fans on the front side behind the grille wired in reverse. I will be running an EA81 Oil pressure sender plumbed with adapters up the ying yang and an EA81 Temp sensor mounted in either the top radiator outlet or in a section of pipe that will split/adapt the top radiator hose. Old EA81 is pulled. EJ18 is pulled. Still need to pull the EJ22 and swap heads. The big stupid annoying thing I'm waiting on now is the completion of major rust surgery on the shell of a body I've got with the engine/tranny out and most of the running gear off. The NY winters have taken their toll on the hatch, but it's not terminal. I just can't put the whole project back together without fixing the whole floor, tunnel cargo area, etc. and making sure it never rusts again. So that puts a kink in my fun, but it will be great to take care of that once and for all... Here are some pics. I, too would be happy to take picture requests as it's going along... I run the same wheels on my hatch with the six lug conversion. It's not a problem at all. I believe the ridge is there to allow a little bit of space for the lip of the hubcap to sit between the wheel and the hub/drum. As long as you're using hubcaps you should be all set. Even if you don't have hubcaps I doubt that you would tweak the rims by torquing your lugnuts, but it's a good idea to have hubcaps anyway.

Bravo! Looks very well done. Very clean and neat. Nice custom exhaust. I for one am not sick of seeing pics of new EJ swaps. It's great inspiration for those of us trying to finish up our own EJ conversions, and good reference material for those who are researching their projects. Have you fired it up yet? How does it run? What kind of adapter plate did you use?

OK, I bit the bullet and stripped/wired the harness for my EJ swap. Chilton's manual was my only reference. You guys were right, not as hard as I thought. Only took the better part on one day. Hopefully it actually works... I am seriously considering doing a writeup on this for the board once I finish the swap since it was easy, but rather intimidating to someone (like myself) with no experience wiring EFI. An important first step I found was to blow up the wiring diagram to a full page size and then to go through and fix all of the inevitable color-coding discrepancies between the diagram and your actual ECU connector wires. Anyway thanks for the help and info.

Subarino has a great illustration of how to wire a 5 spd d/r into an ea81. His EJ conversion album is right here: http://community.webshots.com/album/134929361hUEpcw The illustration is on the second page. It also has some hints about what the connectors on the gearbox do, so hopefully that helps. -
Yeah, In the pics I see a lot of connectors hanging off not plugged in to anything... I found a write-up on the aussie site that gives a good overview of the process, but no specific information, that is here: http://www.ausubaru.com/ausubaru/wiki/index.php/NA_EJ20_Conversion_to_L_Series_by_RXTurbo They said all you need is everything coming off of the ECU and nothing else. I like the sound of that, but I don't know if it is totally true. Subarino has some nice pictures of the harness he made here: http://community.webshots.com/album/134929361hUEpcw He made a nice little fuse box, which looks to contain a couple of relays and things as well. I'm really in the dark on this one. I've never wired a car in my life... I would just like a list of connections you have to make to make the car start and go. That would be a good start for me. I'm not too keen on getting the Kennedy printout as it is for legacies and I have an impreza motor which I've come to find out has a different ECU with three connectors instead of four...
