1984 subaru brat project($200 score)
turbosubarubrat replied to turbosubarubrat's topic in Members Rides
Been working on this on and off, but got the lower radiator mocked up and fans put on radiator. Also lined up the hood and the cut fenders. Lower support made I got part of the upper support and brace made I still haven't decided whether to keep the hood release or use hood pins.- 15 replies

1979 Subaru DL Revving really high!
turbosubarubrat replied to doughildreth's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Nice looking coupe even though it's auto. Do i see a 5 speed 2wd swap in the future? I'm interested to see what the problem is. My hatch does the same with with the weber i put on it. It idles for few seconds then revs to 5k until it burns the gas off usually taking about 7 seconds then goes down to idle.My also revs up when you push on the gas pedal to fast or tap it.- 8 replies

Yes a first gen legacy with a ej22 just like yours but white. It had a factory winch bumper off a 1st gen wagon, brat, coupe, sedan, or 2nd gen brat, hatch, coupe, sedan, and wagon.

Today i got a set of Support Our Troops plates transferred on to the brat today, new tags, and registration. I had some trouble getting them to put them on since the plates got out of the system since they stopped making them/issuing them. They had to run a search on the plates and put them back in the system. Plus you had to have the plates on a vehicle you owned or they will not let you use them because they are not issued anymore. They came on my 85 brat when i got so i was set on that part. I just need to mount them tomorrow and take her for a spin. I have a identical one on my hatch back that's very straight that i put a winch on. Both are factory brush guards which are hard to find. I still need to straighten out my factory winch bumper for my 85 brat...

I'd like to try to make a side by side buggy.
turbosubarubrat replied to utcoyotehunter's topic in Off Road
I think you mean it's a gl. Justy's didn't come with a low range or 1.8. They had a push button 4wd transmission and a 1.3 3 cylinder engine. You must of gotten a 3rd gen ea82 with 5 speed d/r. -
1978 brat with 1.8, DR 5 w/o Driveline
turbosubarubrat replied to smleod's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
My factory 83 manual says(not word for word though): 1) perform adjustment on cold engine coolant temp 68-104 degree fahrenheit 2) tighten head bolts/nuts if needed 3) a. perform adjustments in 2 sequences. Sequence 1- position #1 cylinder at TDC and adjust the valve lifters for intake and exhaust valves on #1 cylinder, for exhaust valve on #3 cylinder, and for intake valve on #4 cylinder. Sequence 2- position #2 cylinder at TDC. Adjust intake and exhaust valves on cylinder #2, for intake valve on #3 cylinder, and exhaust valve on #4 cylinder. Valve clearance is different on hydro than solids too. Can't seem to find that at the moment. -

You should have at least some compression in all 4. 110 isn't great or really bad. I would adjust the valve clearance on both sides with in tolerances according to the hydro lifter adjustment sequence and see what happens. On a ea81t i partially rebuilt the adjustments were way off so it had almost no compression in 2 cylinders. After finely adjusting it i had 175-180 in all cylinders huge pain in the rump roast but worth it. -
Spotted a white 1st gen legacy going through Sandy Oregon today with a factory 1st or 2nd gen factory winch bumper on it. I was to slow to catch up to it since the light turned red, plus i needed to go to dmv to get plates for my brat. If any body knows whose it is let me know or if you see it get their number for me i want to buy the winch bumper.

It fits good but would straighten out better if the dash didn't have a huge crack that raises it up a inch.

Here's the cat i welded in before i brought it into DEQ. Prepped bed. primed. Bed lined. Dash mat in. Trim and covers bad on. The bed covers are slightly darker in the pics because of flash and same with the glare. Finally made radio adapter plate.

You need to run it until it warms up all the way so it burns all the coolant out since it didn't hydro you should be all right. -
Is this a 2ND Gen BRAT rear slider?
turbosubarubrat replied to Scooner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The pic i showed is the rear slider out 2nd gen 83 dl. I got the whole brat for free. All i had to do was to haul it way since it was sitting on a new house owners property and was about to go in the dumpster because of a remodel. The brat was rusty as they came rockers gone, bed gone, and tail gate hinges rusted off(i've seen worse though) -
ej to ea adapter plate. Steel one that came with the motor will be reworked and used on a wheeler. Gasket kit was only $60 shipped and has head bolts. Bought it for bolts, seals, and some gaskets. I need to get felpro or subaru head gaskets still. 150amp fuse block for the alternator. I still need to get a 110 amp alternator and 100 amp fuse. Exedy clutch kit. Subaru intake next vw weber intake. I'm probably going to use some bigger pipe since im going to have to fab up some flanges.

EA-71 engine parts needed
turbosubarubrat replied to Peter's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Have the heads pressure tested at a shop. Its's normal for the ea71, ea81, and ea82 motors to have the head crack in between the valves. On most of them the crack stop at a certain point and don't crack anymore so there fine to use. I had a set of ea81t heads with cracks in them and had them pressure tested. They both were fine so i had them resurfaced and a valve job. -
Fuel pumps, what brand do you trust?
turbosubarubrat replied to TallonX's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My hatch back came with this fuel pump. Make sure you keep the filter before the pump. I had the problem where someone took it out and the pump was clogging and not getting enough fuel to the carb. For a fuel injected car go to the junkyard and find a f-250 or f-350 with dual tanks then pull the external pump off. They're made by bosch and last a long time. All the ones i've pulled looked brand new since they have a metal and foam cover over them. -
Welcome to the forum. It breaks down mostly where you live and how much you want to spend.

1978 brat with 1.8, DR 5 w/o Driveline
turbosubarubrat replied to smleod's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
5 speed d/r out of a non turbo has 3.9 gear ratio and so does the rear differential. All brats have a 3.9 gear ratio in the transmission and differential as long as their manual. Subaru didn't make the first gen brats auto since they didn't have a 4wd auto back then, so you don't have to worry about it have a 3.7 gear ratio like the automatic second gen brats. I've heard of people grinding down the bell housing and transmission case till it fits better. Other than that fabricating till they fit right. -

turbosubarubrat replied to smleod's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
As long as the trans isn't out of a early turbo(3.7 gear ratio) he should be fine. Seeing how they're scare it's unlikely he has one. Most of the 5 speed d/r cars had a 3.9 gear ratio which is the same as the 1st gen brats. I started to convert the my dads 78 brat with a ea81 weber'd and a 5 speed d/r too. Sweet comb and can't be beat for reliability and simplicity. Need to get the engine in to do more fitment. I had to do a custom ea81/ea71 cross member since trans was going to hit the streeing. Also looks like a custom trans cross member is in order too along with a bunch of other stuff to be sorted out later.
