  1. heres some pics of my heads after they got resurfaced and rebuild and before they went back in the turbo wagon. have more on my turbo wagon build thread but there on the motor link is just below.
  2. yes there was single range transmissions for ea81's they where in most dl models and some early 2nd gens had them before 81 when they came out with the dual range which all the gl's came with.
  3. i would think it would be a dirrect fit because the holes are the the same in the floor and it will bolt right in with the motor, only thing im not about is the clutch it's probably the same but im not sure.
  4. yep thats the right one. if your going to spend that much go with a weber 32/36 and get the adaptor plate or just buy it in the kit. a lot of people say its well worth it because you get to get rid of a ton of the emission stuff so you gain power.
  5. still need to know anything about the carb? im doing the same carb too and i have taken it completely apart besides the glass on the center part. i even took the linkage off and wire wheeled them clean i also took out and sanded the circle things to where they look new(forgot the right term)along with the rod that holds them on. i used a rotory tool to grind the smashed ends off the little brash screws to make them come out without braking whick is the only way to take off the little circles. im going to post a pic here once i finsh because i will be done painting it, its 2/3's done and it will be on the already painted intake monifold.
  6. i have been working on the drivers side rear quarter panel on this, so far i have the paint stripped off to bare metal on the dented part and bondo started. i have to say bondo can be a huge pain especialy when it dries in the middle of using it so half of its on the brat and the other have is on the tray.
  7. the head light problem could be a lot of different things. it could be the relay, switch, conections, shorts, fraid/broken wires, the head lights them selves, ect. i had a weird problem with the headlights on one of my subaru's where some one wired in a radio and it cut in to a power source that turned out to be on the same one as the head light relay causeing it to short out making the head lights not work.
  8. sometime soon since im out of school next wednesday hope to figure this hose mess up soon and get the radiator support put on my brat. i went to a wagon for sale identical to this one awhile ago and figured some stuff out.
  9. if you can find a towing kit that people use for towing cars behind rvs that would be better. you dont even need a tow bar you just need the mounts which would be alot stonger and hold up good. a guy who i got a totaled brat from did that and it was tuff. have seen some people just drill holes all the way through the factory bumpers and bolt winch on, they hold up ok but they bend foreward.
  10. i dont and my dad does it half the time(same results either way)if you follow the torque squence you should be fine.
  11. looks like you need a new gasket or tighten the bolts(torque) because it looks like its spraying all the way around the pump when under pressure and is leaking when sitting. it cant be a hole in the hose because in video it appears to be wet all the way around the bottom and you said its all over the place on the front of the engine. i would check the gasket and go from there.
  12. im happy with mine too and these deals dont happen often especially with winches because they usually are shot when scrapped but i have found some really great deals lately, i found the same pro 5000 on craigslist for $300 and a 6k on ramseys website for $1000 . i plan on making a front reciever for the winch that will bolt to where the factory winch was but if i dont like that im going to see if i can even get a winch this big to fit in the bumper(im not mounting to top since i will have the 82 third eye setup). which i dout highly because a harbor freight 3k winch doesn't line up at all and your not supposed to mount upside down .
  13. the first link first result is the best deal at $140 with pisons and rings or by pistons $50 apiece and have to buy rings http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p4712.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0&_nkw=subaru+ea81+piston&_sacat=0&_from=R40 http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=subaru+brat+piston&_pgn=2&_skc=50&rt=nc
  14. Haven't really done anything but picked up 2 ramsey 5k winchs for $40 at the junkyard a couple of weeks ago. They do not have controllers, roller fairleads, plate, and some wiring is missing. They came in a scrap load out of some ones garage. went to one of my dads friends houses and the guy looked at one and said its never been used and the other one was was lightly used which he cleaned the motor and got both winches going without controllers . right now i have one ready for a remote and the other is very close.
  15. you have to use a ea81 4sp dual range transmission or ea82 5 sp dual range but you have to do a lot more to fit in a 5 speed, both would require either a ea81 or ea82 wheel and clutch or combination, linkage work, and maybe a custom drive line. when i tried puting in a 5sp in my dads 78 it needed the mounts lowered so you might as well just lift it because the transmission tunnel is to small. the way the starter is setupon the ea71 transmission makes it almost impossible to put on a ea81 or ea82 motor. i would put in the ea81 with the 5sp or just rebuild.
  16. ^thats what i thought have torn into almost to many of these second gens(around 30) for parts that i needed/need for my brat which can have a ecm(its wired to have one in the harness) and my 83 turbo wagon which has one.
  17. the front end i got for my 85 brat came off a 81 hatch 4wd which had a ecm in it and it was all stock with aea81 and 4 speed dual range. so i dont know subaru did what it wanted which is why stuff gets complicated
  18. they have ecm's it depends on the carb., if its from califoria, and if its a turbo(its not a turbo in this case).
  19. had this problem on a 83 turbo wagon somebody installed another radio and it cut into power on stuff so it was setting off the headlight relay
  20. looks like a tight fit but you can always cut and weld if worst comes to worse.
  21. a guy i know is using stainless steel ones that he is happy with on his brat. there more expensive but it looks like there well worth it.
  22. im going to say it looks like it would fit with a factory frame but you might have to take the seats off then put the frame in then bolt the seats back on to the frame. but i would say a few more picks would make it easier to tell.
  23. if you can take some pics i can probably tell you if it will fit heres some of the ones i've put together 79 brat 1978 brat 1985 brat
  24. engine work is the carb. being tuned since its rebuilt
