  1. This is on your 79 right? If so because of the placement of the pumps on these older rigs you might have a cracked rubber fuel hose somewhere before your pump, making the pump suck air and work harder. Another thing is your pump shouldn't have to run at all to start the car, there should already be enogh fuel in the carb to start it. Things to check, see if the fuel level is right through your sight glass, check the rubber parts of your fuel systems for cracks (if in doubt replace), maybe try a differant brand fuel pump. Have you been noticing any other problems? Lack of performance or bad Mpgs
  2. If you live where they salt the roads, keep the undercarriage and rear wheel wells washed out.
  3. Hey scoobie dude please do not get upset with me, I'm just an observer. I think gloyal was just pointing out that your post was a little hard to understand, like gloyal said why an 86? I don't think gloyal's intent was to attack you, just to try and make your post more clear and point out the belt is the first place to look.
  4. Really? I would save that for a last resort, if the key isn't turning off it suggests something's binding it up or it's being locked out for some reason. Hitting it with a hammer could case the tumblers to break if they are binding.
  5. +1 make sure to jack the front tires up off the ground when inspecting.
  6. A couple other things to try are stepping on the brake, wiggle the steering wheel back and forth as your trying to turn the key off, try switching from drive to park a few times in a row, and try turning the car back on and off again and maybe it will come out. If none of that works I would suspect the sylinoid that locks the key in when not in park is malfunctioning.
  7. Green connector is for test mode, should still be the same codes, I'm not as familiar with the loyals as the legacys so I would go with man on the moons directions.
  8. You have OBDI you just need to connect the read memory connecters, they should be two single black plugs, plug the together and watch the check engine light blink. I think the connectors are usually either by the drivers side strut tower or under the steering column. The first page of the new gen FAQ sticky has a link on how to read OBDI legacys and imprezas it will tell you how to interpret the flashes and it will give you a list of codes.
  9. It's in park right? If its not in park the key wont shut off all the way, so it will get stuck.
  10. Oops lol I usually change them at the same time, your right I knew there was a tensioner somewhere on the engine.
  11. IMHO I would get the legacy and put a dual range range trans in that. MORE POWER!!!!!!!!!
  12. I know for a fact that the 97 2.2 has an idler pully, my step dad has a 97 legacy Brighton and I've changed the belts on it before, On his motor it had an idle pully for the alt to tension it, I remember because it was a pain compared to my 90 that doesn't have the idle. I don't know why yours would be differant that seems weird to me.
  13. Well someone must have moved this to the new gen forum. Like I said before first step is to see if your check engine light is on, if it is then you will want to get the codes scanned. Some auto parts stores will scan it for you and give you the code, if you do that and post the code up here we can tell you what it is.
  14. its still not the same, if you have a bolt on ball joint then the struts pictured will not work, They are differant. I've never heard them called a McPherson strut before but, I looked it up I'm my shop Manuel and said the same thing as you quoted. To be clear though, the style struts pictured above will not work with your brat, you need to order the other style struts. I did some searching and found info on the first gen brats they do not use the same style struts as the second gen brats. The struts In the picture are the second gen brat style.
  15. I live in a hilly area and my ej22 gets around 26 avg and both my mom and stepdads ej22 cars get between 25-28 of course that's not town driving either, but the worst milage I've ever seen out of an ej22 is 20mpg on my moms legacy with 250k and having to warm it up and go through a muddy driveway. I think there's something else going wrong, it sounds like the new cat made a differance, but even your best mpg seems low. Front o2 deals with air fuel mix i dont think rear one affects the engine. I do know that changing the exaust can cause your engine to run differant, but I've never seen it decrease fuel milage.
  16. Unless the 95 is differant than all the 90's subarus it uses an idler pully that is adjusted with a bolt.Acctually I know the 95 2.2 in an impreza has an idler pully because I pulled an alt from one to put on my gl and I still have the idler.
  17. I've seen this before, firstly it helps to turn off high drain devices while the engine is cold like the headlights. My stepdads legacy Brighton has done this for years, its never had a problem he just turns the headlights off and it goes away. Also wouldn't hurt to check your idler pully that adjusts the tension on the belt.
  18. I think the problem is in the non subaru remans, I think as long as your getting new axles (you can tell if they don't ask for a core) you won't have the problems like the remans. On the other hand it might take a few try's but the remans arn't really that bad either once you get a good set, my moms legacy has two napa remans on the front and they have never given her any problems and they've been in there a few oil changes.
  19. Okay, I found a parts car with a good ea71 and single range trans, so this car should be getting a transplant soon. This ought to put it back on the road again
  20. No, the imprezas tanks are top to bottom, legacys have tanks from side to side, totaly differant.
  21. the rear ones are the ones that catch me off gaurd, one time i was driving down the road with my mom and we had been hearing something weird for weeks, but i couldn't figure it out untill we stopped at the gas station and i checked the back tires. i could tell the wheel bearings were gone without even jacking the car up. im surprised the tire stayed on
  22. they want people to buy new cars, so every year they come out with the "new and improved versions" so people will trade in their old cars to get the "new and improved version". i have no doubt they do have new features, but who knows if they were a good idea or not i wouldn't worry about it, its all a trick to get them more money.
  23. The other design looked a lot alike but, they were differant, the ball joint for one, McPherson struts have the same style ball joints as the legacy, the pinch type. Of your ball joint is differant than the legacys or is a bolt on type you've got the older style I can't remember what their called, if you put up a pic of the ball joint, I can tell you with %100 accuracy weather it's McPherson or not, I'm thinking their not.
