i have a lever shifter. i was just wondering because my mom had a 79 subie wagon 1600 that had a dual rang transmission. i would think there would be no differance on mine

new radiator in, system flushed, new brake caliper, trying to get my old shocks out, and carb rebuild in the next couple days then on to struts.

i was just reading a forum in here that was about the difference between a brat dl and a brat gl and one of the differences was that the dl had a single speed transmission and the gl had a dual. i have a station wagon gl should that have a dual rang transmission, because it has always just had high no low so is there a chance that i have dual rang transmission but low is broken or do i have a replaced transmission? is there anyway to find out for sure?

80 gl 1600 bad milage now won't idle

weird i wonder what would cause that? i ordered a rebuild kit and got carb cleaner and dip i'm going to rebuid it and see what happens. edit: i think what your mehanic was talking about sounds like an accelerator pump issue? i'm not sure but i know i had a toyta that had a bad accelerator pump and it would flood the carb out and a local mechanic put a b.b in it some where and closed it off and it worked for along time. does anyone know if you can do something simaler with a hitachi? -
wow sounds like you have the same problems i'm having on my 80. i just ordered a rebuild kit for my carb and back shocks (their only $12 a piece from rock auto) mine basically disintegrated except the bolts that hold them in they decided to stay permanently. let us know how the struts work out i need some really bad. i'm in the same situation right at the moment

oh wow i'm into mudding mainly so i dont see that kinda damage, usually.

i just bought this car not long ago so i don't know alot about it. it is a 80 gl 1600 ever since i have bought it it has only gotten between 20 and 22 mpg it has the stock carb. i have driven a couple tanks of gas through it and ran some carb cleaner through it and it still isn't getting very good milage. now it refuses to idle lower than 2k anything under that and it will die and if you are driving under 2k it will splutter and have loss of power but anything over 2K and it runs good. i adjusted the carb before this started and it ran fine for a tank and a half of gas. there is a half tank of gas in right now so it has gas i have never let it run out of gas. it has a new fuel filter 2 tanks of gas ago, and yes i changed the fuel filter before i ran the carb cleaner through the carb does look a little iffy i was thinking of rebuilding it later on i think it has to do with the carb, i'm thinking maybe idle jet or accelerator pump does anyone have any tips or tricks i could use to do a quick fix so i can use it for a while? i just spent all my money on shocks so it needs to be cheap. any advice would be appreciated.

good idea luckily new pumps are cheap i've seen them on rockauto for $30

i thought that to at first but both fuses can be removed and the head lights still work. as for the year make and model 80 gl 1600 the fuses say head upper and lower my 90 legacy also has these fuses. i actually removed both the fuses started up the engine and everything works that i can think of checking

i'm not to worried about the oil pan or filter i have the skid plate under them. the only thing i worry about is the rear cvs and mufler components on my gl but like you said those sameris are pretty hard to hurt. the one bad part about the sameri is the weak trans. thats why i sold mine
-
my 80 did this for a while it eventually got so bad when you would back up it would bang and the whole car would shake when i took it apart it was a bad hub and c.v.
-
i searched this already and came up with 0 results. what is the head fuse and what does it do? i can't find anything explaining them in my manuel.
-
this may sound silly but have you tried changing your cap? it may have a crack in it causing it to not get spark.
-
its easy i just did this on my 80 gl 1600 all you do is pull the four bolts and then with the filter on twist slightly and pull. you might have to wiggle it a little bit to get it free. on install the hardest part is getting the slot lined up just make sure that the oil pump is seated to the block before you start wrenching. oh and just fyi its two screws and you can rebuild the pump i did mine in five minuets they sell a rebuild kit on rock auto for $10 look under an 80 brat 1600 (same motor) i ordered it for my gl and it worked fine
-
i just sold my old sameri and bought a gl 1600. my sameri was plane jane stock except i had a set of walnut shell 235-75-R15s on it i went through some nasty mud with it almost never got stuck and as for flexing i could climb over tank traps but there was alot of flex. my gl is actually stronger and can go dang near as far as my sameri, and it has stock tires
-
how long has it been since you have flushed your oil system? that may be the problem sludge could be clogging oil ports.

cool thanks

thanks for the info i know this may sound stupid but what years are gen 2?

i have an 80 gl and i would like to know what years and models (ex. gl, dl, brat) have compatible struts with this year. i have been searching local junk yards and from what i have been finding is a lot of the 80 gls have badly worn struts, also i went onto rockauto and looked at struts for an 85 gl, they sold economy struts for $30 (mine are $60). i have had experiences with rockauto before when i was trying to buy a rebuild kit for the same car they didn't have one listed for a gl 1600 but they did have one listed for brat 1600 of the same year. i have looked at struts for a dl on rockauto of the same year and they were considerably cheaper would those work? does anyone have experience with this?

like NWsubie said about year make and model also if it is a auto or manuel trans. it sounds more like a tranny problem than clutch problem but hard to tell without more info.
