1987 Subaru GL Wagon bogging down
ferp420 replied to soobie87's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Guessing wildly Air filter cloged or failing fuel pump cloged fuel tank pick up did they replace the o2 sensor when they did the exhaust is there excessive blow by how's the compression bad ground maybe if it was ignition related I would expect a lot of back fireing and piping also ruff running and idleing -

Try changing the fuel filter cheap and easy -
Any luck with this I'll be in mariposa next week if you need help I dont even unbolt the wheel I jack up the car use my foot on the bottom of the tire to push it down then slip my blocks in then bolt them down about 30 min job to cut and install the blocks I've done a few the napkin has all the lift info and block specs for the easy diy 2" lift the pic is floating around on this site some were still im sure I think a 2" wide block is way to wide to fit it the space your workin with maybe 1" and don't forget the angle on the blocks and the offset on the straight cut blocks

There are a lot of little things you can do to make power with any engine better cams would move the powerband around and make the power more usable increase the intake runner length for more low end pull bigger exhaust helps get the air out porting the heads makes them flow better raising the compression in the cylinders always adds more punch good sparkplugs to make sure you have a complete burn if you could disable the rev limiter it might free up the top end especially with ported heads and bigger exhaust using senthetic oil through out the drive train will free up some horse power to over all the ej2.2 is a good motor and there pretty hot out of the box I wouldn't expect more than a 25-30% increase in power and would take a huge amount of work to pull off using the 2.5 heads will lower the compresion wich is good for a turboed motor but not for a n/a motor I personally hate the 2.5 engines but they can make some good reliable power if built right but stock its junk in my opinion I really like my stock imprezza with the 2.2 being able to light up all 4 tires at 50 and drift around the corners up hill around slow traffic while going through the mountains is pretty impressive in my book but its not going to win any drag races my 2.2 swaped forester is getting the full treatment it already has the big exhaust and the 2.5 engine manigment system so its just porting and polishing and shaving the block and heads and some intake work I'm keeping the stock cams for now because of cost I'm expecting power output close to a 2.5 but with a better torque curve and more usable power I'll know more after I get it back together basicly a engine is a engine the theoris are the same so what makes better power on a Chevy or ford will make power on a Subaru you just have to use your head if I were you I would buy another stock motor and build it up then swap it in in what ever configuration you decide to go with n/a or boosted but the turbo changes the build to so make your desision then build to suit your desires you could always swap your old motor back in

Total electrical failure when switched "on"
ferp420 replied to DrieStone's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Clean your battery cables and check voltage inside the car like at the cigerete lighter or fuse block my imprezza just did the same thing it was bad battery had 12v but wouldent even run the led dome light but yours sounds like a dirty battery cable and cleaning a cable is free so its a good place to start -
They move the top of the strut inward if that helps any did you read the napkin ? you didn't say how thick you cut the blocks and a pic or 2 might help us make fun uh help with your issue lol over all its a easy task but some times it takes a few trys

Wrong section but the info you need is burried in the forum somewhere start diggin

You could try airing down a lower air pressure would have better grip than a tire at full air pressure it might be enuff to get up that hill

long travel Outbacks or making Subarus faster and more reliable offroad
ferp420 replied to pontoontodd's topic in Off Road
Worth a try I guess have you looked under the hood at night to look for spark leak maybe a bad wire or plug maybe a bad ground wire Maybe a bad 02 sensor those cars are so picky it could be anything from a sensor to a vacume leak I really dislike the 2.5D for that reason I guess that's why my outback is sitting in the yard half built lol -
I agree with ubaroo that's a lot of steel but if its mounted to the car with enuff screws and enuff surface area it might not tear the body apart the factory bumper mounts won't cut it by them selves in a minor impact its best to have a little give in the bumper so the body doesn't give would you rather have a killer bumper and replace the car every time you test the bumper or have a nice car and just replace or repair the bumper when you deside to test it out

The old can style coils like we use on our loyals and older rigs have oil inside the can to help cool the coil also why they need to be mounted mostly upright when they get hot the oil can boil out or harden up they then produce a intermittent spark the distributer less coils are encased in epoxy they don't get as hot because there are basicly 4 small coils but if there's any resistance it the system ie bad sparkplugs or wires dirt oil whatever they will melt the epoxy internally and some times exturnaly and short out most only short when hot at first because as the spark finds its path it leaves little particles of metal in its path and eventually creates a direct short this is real easy to see with points based ignition system the modern electronic ignitions fixed a lot of this problem but it still happens -

The coils work fine when cold but exspand enuff to create a intermittent short when hot one coil burned a hole in its self from the spark jumping another had a little crack by the plug the rest looked perfectly normal it seems the older EJed rigs have a issue with coils we lost one every 2 years or so on all our subies exsept the 04 it hasent had a issue yet -

Most of the time I see a po301-po304 code its a bad coil one time it was oil leaking in to the spark plug holes but I must have replace 6 or 7 coils because of the po30_ code -
I use hammerite on my wheelers its tougher than regular paint and it can be applied with a brush and it covers scratches and small dents real good because of the marbling affect on the paint

With the timing belt cover removed the hardest part of changing the timing belts is removing the ac alternator and power steering belts the timing belts just slide on and off no big deal no tools needed the ease of timing belt replacement is part of what I love about the ea82

I have a welded rear diff I swap in to my daily driver I can say it doesn't mater if the wheels are driven or not the binding is the same get your self some LSD and be happy lol much easier to deal with I like my limited slip but its wore out it ether locks solid or is open witch is OK the front to back binding I sent a big issue its only a problem like in a parking lot or some were slow tight turns are needed a locked rear and a locked center is bad on any hard surface even packed dirt all that sead your gonna brake stuff or were stuff out faster off road anyway so it really I sent a big deal its gonna start to feel like a truck anyway and feel loose an the road with enuff off road use unless your replacing parts regularly again get some LSD and be happy

there are factory made push bars for subaru some even have winch mounts but any bumper can be made to fit off of anything if you have a sawsall and a welder and some knowladge or be willing to learn anything is posable but seriosly these guys build some realy nice stuff if you dont have a welder or a freind with a welder your only choice is a vender from this site or similer i know there are alot of shops that can mod or fab up a bumper so if your gona modify one you have to be creative outside of the push bars made for the older subarus theres nothing outhere that will just bolt on
-
Any small truck bumper from the 80s should be close enuff but most people build there own or you can get ahold of some of the small venders from this site they do sell them and might be able to fab one up if you want some thing custom
