  1. Tryed that but i dident want the roof coming down on my head and besides when its 100 + in the shade working from inside a air conditioned car pushing a button sounds alot easyer and i used the good studs for fencing almost all of it is being recycled whats left is gona be fire fuel and th ashes will go in the garden if i ever get that far lol
  2. Nice skid plate I just caught up on this thread I vote for building a second car just replace the parts you pull out of the one you have now and use the parts from the new one to put the outback together u only need one race car and one screw around/prerunner
  3. I've got some pics and video I'll upload when I get home I have very limited cell service out here
  4. I had to head down to my house in Johnson valley to do some clean up kinda on short notice and some work on the house I've been working my loyale like a dog using it to demo a mobile home and some truck campers and haul heavy trailer loads of trash through deep sand not exsacly fun or wheelin but it kinda is about a week in to the clean up with a load around 1500lbs on the back of little blue I drop the clutch and nothing. I put it In to 4wd and it sank on the one corner that had a rear axle on it sure enuff up front there were cage parts and bearings in the sand my brand new home rebuilt orealy axle finally let loose not bad it lasted 2 years I rebooted and regressed a brand new axles compared to running them out of the box and getting a few months out of them it did good so now I had one rear tire spinning my friend and I managed to get it back on to the hard pack I pulled the bad front and reinstalled the back so I'm now in rwd mode with a locked rear end lol It did better in fwd only high range and a open diff than it dose in rwd low and locked up I had it buried In the soft sand to the point it wouldn't move I jacked it up but it just dug right back in after 5 or so tryes I pulled cable and for the first time ever I got to use the winch for what I bought it for instead of just moving stuff it was so dug in I was pulling a Nissan 300zx with no wheels around while giving it gas and the little loyale just sank it came out eventually but it was really stuck long story short with out 4wd I'm not going to be hitting any trails this trip I haven't seen the guy from fox shocks this trip ether he must not be around I haven't gotten out much ether I haven't even run the wraith yet this trip and I always make time for my toys but there's just no fun for me in Johnson valley but next trip its on
  5. That is a ea82 bodied rig You might want one that already has 4wd though I would look for a beater if your planning to wheel it any roo is gonna need to be built to be any kind of wheeler so its just your preference there's not one that's better than the others but some need more work than others look for a rig with a factory duel range or be ready to hunt for one to swap in other than that there isent anything I would look for remember there's very little aftermarket for our rigs so be ready to fab some parts there are people on this site that do make some parts like lifts and bumpers we use parts from other cars to upgrade ours look up 2.7 loyale he is a weath of information about what parts fit
  6. when you have cash on hand and they blow you off its upsetting maybe no one buys from them because of there atitude and besides if there set up basicly in my back yard how could I not talk to them also if there already poopin on us what difference would it make but seriosly my neighbor is a fox shock rep so I'll talk to him he is watching my house right now the next time I see him out wheelin I'll go play then say something maybe if they see these rigs on the trail they might be more willing to work with us usaly when I go to a ohv park I'm in all the places the yotas and big trucks wont go I've never been turned away from a park with my roo I've never herd of Subaru discrimination like that before I think if you go to a ohv park to do doh dohs I think that's a responsible person where else is it leagle to do doughnuts that's what ohv parks are for I usaly go to state or federal ohv parks or blm or national forest service land maybe private parks are different OK sorry for jackin the thread
  7. All manual transmisions go in to gear with out pushing the clutch even while driving I shift with out using the clutch all the time my beetle doesn't even have a clutch actuator anymore I drove it like that for years the slop is most likely the linkage
  8. Lol fox shock won't talk about Subaru struts lol I've asked to at there booth a few years ago well before your build I started asking about shock travel and specks he asked what it was for i sead my Subaru he just sead they don't make anything that fits it and walked away he kinda pissed me off I know what I need and was just lookin for specks on there products I didn't start by saying I needed Subaru struts now I'm thinking every one on the forum should call and bug them lol honestly I'll take my money elseware if I was talking jeep or toyota they would have been all over it but the way there rep blew me off didn't sit well I can't afford there shocks now anyway I had cash at the time but if I could afford it right now I wouldn't no mater how good they are next time I see them I'm gonna give them spoob about it now I know they know that the Subaru people want struts too and they just blow us off and they will get a ear full at set up and break down and all week during there events maybe make a sign that says Subaru struts sold here and hang it on there booth when there not looking lol I'm still pissed at that guy
  9. The cases on eBay where the ones I was talking about there expensive but if your gonna scratch build a trans it might work if not your on the hunt I'm sure a importer can get one or find some one out of the USA to hunt one down I have seen a few on Craigslist to personally I hate driving on the street with my center diff and rear end locked in my opinion it sucks but it makes it so I can slide the rear end at will on dirt eliminating the need for steering breaks also the extra tracsion is realy nice to have in the mud and sand I'm thinking with that heavy outback adding a big 6 up front might mess with the balance of the rig I know my winch dose on my loyale and its only a few hundred pounds and the outbacks or ej rigs in general don't float very well on soft sand or mud they tend to dig in more the extra wait will make that worse but it might give a advantage some where else my scout is very heavy and it walks right past the stuck yotas and heeps but it was built that way from the factory I don't know what affects adding that much wait to a outbak that wasn't designed for it would do maybe put a few bags of concrete or something up front some how and see how it handles it might not even notice the extra wait
  10. The best gl for wheelin is the one u find and modify for your style of wheelin after all a wheeler is only what you make of it
  11. I'm using spray on copper gasket sealer on my head gaskets it outlasted the motor i use it mostly because I surfaced my heads and block myself so the copper sealer gets to all the imperfections in the mating surface the there are a lot of poor quality head gaskets out there so be careful felpro brand is usaly a safe bet I used a cheap gasket once and it never sealed I replaced it with the copper coated felpro gaskets and it lasted the life of the engine the use of sealent on the head gaskets was probably a very old procedure using poor quality gaskets they have come a long way since our cars where made and in most cases the gaskets if good quality should already have a layer of sealent like stuff on them that replaces the need to add sealent so unless your making your own head gaskets or buying $5 eBay head gaskets or are in a pinch and cant get your heads surfaced you won't need sealent the sealent won't fix a warped or damaged head there is a time and place for head gasket sealent but these days its just a cheap way around doing the job right cheap out on the machine work your gonna need sealer cheap out on the gaskets your gonna need sealer do the job right you won't need sealer do the job right it will last a long time the sealent will break down faster than the head gasket causing a leak the copper holds up well but its still a bandaid
  12. I'm in no way saying put stock struts back in but u ditched the twin wish bone set up and went back to a struts because the twin set up didn't work out to well I'm saying u need to tweek your motor and trans in them same fashion you tweeked your suspention and some one posted a ej duel range for sale earlier in the the thread there out there they also sell just the case and extra parts to make it work if it doesn't have then1:59 gear reduction it can be swamped in and it works I'm sure Subaru tested it quite a bit they already worked out all the issues the divorced treasfer case is more for slower rigs in my opinion but dosent have to be I'm gonna use one because well I have it and a nice set of solid axles to match And a few spare front axles so it won't cost me anything for parts in my opinion locking the rear and center diff's is a must for off road based only exsperiances wheelin a impreza a outback a legacy and a forester not one of them could hang with the loyale with the locked center and rear diff and the low range also the low range will give you that gear between 2nd and 3rd the only issue I had was when trying to split shifts from high range to low range it shifts fine from low to high but not from high to low if you could fix that little issue it would be a game changer In my opinion maybe play with the power band on the motor so the torque is more usable and since your redoing your exhaust maybe tweek it for better flow there's so many little things that can be done to make the package your working with better but when I say better I mean for off road use they would suck bootie on the street which brings me back to the dedicated race car/wheeler bs again sorry for pushing my opinion about that I know it doesn't fit your needs but it just seems like the natural progression of a off road rig to me
  13. This wouldn't be a issue if it where dedicated race car and if I where you I would have locked the center diff along time ago and why try to build what Subaru already built if your worried about the strength of the gears just harden them up 10 speeds are better than 6 start with a ej duel range box and go from there with all your custom fabed suspension and going back to the stock style set up I would think you would trust Subaru to have it set up well the engine and trans are in that same range there good just need to customize them to your needs it just seems to me your spending a lot of time and money reinventing the wheel you could always go with a divorced transfer case that's the route I'm going on my outback some day that would make changing gears easyer
  14. Use a hammer and a punch and give the bolts a good tapperoo on the head and heat them up alittle and use some good penitrating oil the coolnt causes alittle carosion on the inside of the bolt holes and the like to snap off its usaly a easy fix after the manifold is off the treads dont carode as bad and theres usaly enuff of the bolt sticking out to grab with vicegrips a little bit of play time and they come right out then use the punch to drive whats left of the bolt out of the manifold its a very easy job if the bolts dont snap and not realy a big deal if they do
  15. A three foot around bolder will stop it about %95 of the time lol
  16. The skid I'm running now basicly the subframe is lower than the exhaust so the skid hits first
  17. The fact that the sound goes away when you press the clutch pedle would sugest that its not a axle or drive shaft that sound is most likely a bearing of some kind or gear noise unless it makes that noise in 4wd theres no load on any of the rear componets till its in 4wd so no reason for the sound to change when the clutch is pushed maybe its stuck in 4wd try changing the oil in the trans and rear diff and clean that axle so its not.gritty ive had vibration from failing axles but never any noise but i see how it could happen pushing the clutch wouldent afect that though what ever it is it dosent sound like a big deal i would drive it till what ever it is fails probly never will though fresh oil and greese will help even if it dosent make the noise go away its very posable you have a few problems the noise and vibration could be caused by different things
  18. Its bolted to the crossmember and a frame work of steel i loose alittle clearance but not having to worry about the y pipe and oil pan is worth it ill try to find some pics of it or take one its on a ea82 though but i did do a outback skid the same way but they look alittle funny because the exhaust is so wide
