Hot-Rodding a Brat in two stages - Suggestions?
ferp420 replied to RAD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the realy nice part about the msd ignition is you dont have to mod anything and can be returned to stock in 2 min on the side of the road there is a power a ground and 4 wires 2 hook to the + and - wires off of th coil the other two hook to the coil itself in place of the - and + wires so easy i felt like a idiot when i asked how to hook it up my self because its so simple it just triggers the plugs to fire twice giveing a very complete burn it only fires multiple times under 3k but by that time our motors are running in there powerband you wouldent think it would help that much but the differance has been amazing on every rig ive ever used it on but once you go multi port fuel injection say if you do go for a ej swap i dought it would help much -
BS on easy lift for 85 e82
ferp420 replied to machineit's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
wow i never had any troubles lifting any of my rigs i can say it was easy i have built and installed all my own kits on 4 or so different subies the loyales/gls are very easy the 04 lego wasent hard but geting the alignment back has been a chore mostly because of bent and damaged stuff from the previos owner i have a 5" lift on my daily i have the 2" lift blocks on my spare loyale less than 4 hours to build and install a kit on the gl10 the 04 lego was done in a weekend all 4 new struts front strut spacers rear lift blocks new arms new upper camber links the problem was finding the right alignment guy some one who wasent stuck on factory bs and realy knows there shibbit the alignment guru we used realy liked the lift kit and it should be all good here in a week or so once you do it a few times its easy the straight block you have dosent look right it looks way to big other than that it should go in real easy just unbolt the top of the strut use your foot to push down on the wheel and stick the blocks down the whole easy the crossmember blocks if you drop your bolts in before lowering the crossmeber it keeps it aligned and goes back together real easy the rear is even easyer installing a lift kit is easyer than writing with good spelling and grammer for me anyway and im pretty sure your car isent going to fall apart because u missed a period some where or miss spelled something and your sentances run on but i could be wrong maybe it could cause a exsplosion of something or more likely someone lol good luck i hope your next one will be easyer -
so i have a realy nice loyale just laying around it has the original motor out of my daily driver in it and my daily spun a bearing so im pulling the motor back out so its gona be sitting with out a mtor for a long time as i was reading a thred about swaping a 6 in to a brat hell why not a v8 in a loyale i have a tiny 260 v8 and tranny i could toss in there i would never drive it on the street or even try to register it maybe a show car or drag car or something stupid like that i think it would be a fun project lol maybe after i fix my daily and the outback/baja project and after i finish restoring our outback sport and finnish the diesel swap then i might be able to start on this lol maybe lol the only real fab would be motor and tranny mounts as it would be more four fun and to look at that expecting to drive it or stop it this would be so much fun but i have alot of car projects and my house to rebuild aahh i hate being sick

any motor can be carbed with enuff effert but why ive herd the early 2.2 have a spot for a distributor and a carb mount can be fabed up relativly easy the ea81 dosent have alot of aftermarket suport so finding parts like intake manifolds for a duel carb set up is gona be fun there not hard to make but it dose take some fab skills i ran duels on my vw gia they kicked but as long as they where sinked but after 1 drive they usaly went outof sink and where worse than the single carb my bus also had factory duels on it same problem worked ok for a while but over all was a problem set up it now runs a single progresive weber and works well the best most noticable cheapest simplest mod to get more driveabuility out of that motor is to do a good tune up and add a multi spark ignition like a msd or procomp or mallory or high fire or or or i got a procomp used but new in box off of ebay for $100 its been on vw subarus and my scout and it was by far the best mod to any of those rigs on my ea82 loyale it alone gave me a extra 10mph going up big hills it was the differance between stalling when trying for a second gear start and after the install it took off in second like first was before my ea82 runs 30" tires and befor it spun a bearing would out pull the turbo model up to about 60 mph i did do alot of work to the motor but the biggest increese was the ignition box ive disconected it just to see what the engine mods did alone and then with it conected back up and easly 10 mph gain going up hill with mods and with out mods when the car was stock i could pull a hill around 55-60 after the lift and big tires it droped to around 45-50 engine mods with big tires brought me back up to50- 55 range the procomp ignition stock tires and motor i was able to hold 65 up the hill with the mods and ignition and 30" tires im holding 65 up that hill so basicly the ignition alone was enuff to overcome the performance drop from the effective gearing change from going to larger tires all that motor work months of porting polishing shaving the heads and block cleaning preping and building dident give the same drivable noticeable differance that a simple little 4 wires only ignition box did oh and the motor still dosent like alot of fuel -
i payed $100 for my last one ran kinda it had a bad freeze plug in the head and a slightly bent front bumper and bad headlight my daily driver weekend worrior for the last 7 years and the parts doner i robbed the motor and duel range out of where both free both ran great drove good and were registered people through these away out here with out a second thought so personaly i would never pay that much for a loyale

i highly dought you can shoe horn a 6 cylender in a brat the ea81 is a small motor if i remeber right even the ej22 needs the frame rails cut to fit because its probly a foot or so wider than the ea81 and the wait will be a issue for the suspention so unless your a kick but fabricator or have a lot of time and or money the ej swap isent the best idea the spfi fuel injection system should be cheap at the junk yard and will bolt on the multi spark discharge box is fairly cheap that and a good tune up and it will feel like a new car the msd box alone increesed my hill climbing speeds from 45 mph to 55 mph with a 5" lift and 30" tires no other mods gave me results like that and ive done the port and polish shaved heads and block custom intake and exhaust but the cheap msd style ignition box made by far the biggest differance -
the subaru suspention guru guy recamended megan racing lateral links they where 180 for the set on ebay for our lifted lego there going in next week there cheaper than replacing the bushings as there built in to the arms on this model and ours are shot aswell so it was cheaper than replacing the stock parts and adding a camber kit

Removing Gen 1 Outer CV joint
ferp420 replied to ukkiwi's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
one of my first jobs in the auto world was rebuilding cv axles powersteering racks starters and alternators ive rebuilt more than my share of cv axles and yes behind the stub there is a tin cap that can be poped out to get to the clip but only on the rear axles the fronts use a different stub end and there isent any other way than brute force to get them apart but if you hit them just right they pop right out after a few hundread you get good at it im alittle out of practice but im running my custom built axles on the rear i did have one fail last time out on the trail but that was because i dident cut the grove for the clip deep enuff and it pulled out and scatered the pieces out on the trail i rebuilt it in the middle of the desert and its still on the car now -

msd ignition boxes work wounders under 3000 rpms by far the best bang for your buck just adding more fuel wont help if the engine cant burn it also fuel injection will increese your drive ability by adding the right amount of fuel when you need it good for maybe 5hp there isent a easy/cheap way to get power out of that motor you could boar it stroke it and shave it then do a port and polish job a big fat carb and custom intake and a free flowing exaust but that takes alot of time and or money and it still wont give you as much power as a ej swap but thats not always the best option ether -

or just stick one end in a vise or something solid and smack the other end with a sledge hammer or pop the little tin cap off the inside of the cup rears only and pull the clip -
Best Aftermarket Ignition Coil?
ferp420 replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
im running a multiple spark discharge ignition box (procomp al6) with a stock coil on my ea82 it made a huge differance on every motor ive ever run them on 40 hp to 400 hp they just burn the fuel better the stock coil is holding up to the double duty multi spark just fine i do carry a spare but in 4 years have never needed it if you want a smoother more pepier motor just pick up a multi spark box i like my procomp al6 but its just a clone of the msd al6 box there are others like malory and there are alot of other clones out there msd make a cheap modle called the street fire pep boys used to sell them for $99 but that was a long time ago i got mine used but new in box for cheap its outlasted all the cars its been on and its still going the single best mod ive ever done on my suby -

ferp420 replied to pontoontodd's topic in Off Road
the problem with the flat engine design is they where the cyliders in to a oval shape so just adding new rings pgobly wont stop your oil usage it dident in my 98 outback we ended up replacing the motor with one of the japeness motors after 7 motors we got a good one lasted 60k before it started burning oil again and we took it off the road we got tiered of dealing with that motor i think your better off swaping a good used motor in or swaping in a different motor all together maybe a newer 2.5 or a turbo motor but the 6cly would kick all of them out the door the money you would.need to spend to save that block is better spent on swaping a better motor in -
Aluminum Radiator for EA81? Or repair option?
ferp420 replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if your old one is copper and is still in desent shape its very easy to solder the hole closed most 99c stores or radio shack or what ever sell soldering irons and soldering kits its would cost less then $5 depending on witch soldering iron you get i just did my heater core in my truck last month the only thing i dont like about aluminum radiators is that aluminum cant be soldered -
if theres any issues with second or forth you could try adjusting the shifter linkage there are 2 bolts on the bottom of the shifter plate usaly covered by dirt and road debries loosen those and you can slide the shifter front to back about a 1//4 inch that should be enuff adjustment to get reverse back

Doing a lift, got most of the stuff, but I have a few questions.
ferp420 replied to 1996BlackBauer's topic in Off Road
ive noticed that with out a sway bar on hard corners at speed the front inside tire lifts and looses traction causing the car to slow down thats the only differance ive found between having a sway bar on or off i used to unbolt it when i went offroad but ive found it dident hurt my traval at all so i dont disconect it any more its not a rock crawler and dosent have crazy articulation so if your planning any high speed cornering on pavement i would keep the sway bar and just leave it if your not driving on the road you probly wont notice any differance with it on or off -

the desert buggies usaly mount the coolers to the roof or on the side of the rig i would probly pop out that rear window on the drivers side and mount my fuel filler and coolers and fans there -

take a look at the cars that drive dirt roads every day the back hatch is where all the dirt collects if your fan is.blowing out you might be ok thats mostly dead air back there mixed with dirtnand road debries personaly if it where me i would run heavy wall steel pipe back under the car and tie it in to some kind of cage or sub frame that way it serves 2 porposes -
dude you all are way to calm i wish i could let isht go like that they would have hell fire on there hands if it was me

Ya high tech I spent a month living out of my loyale while I was working on my house trying to get it livable I can't believe there wasn't a release mechanism installed from the factory I couldn't imagine not being able to open it from the inside -

84 BRAT drivability issues
ferp420 replied to turfman454's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i had a 63 ford van that had so much gunk in the tank even after droping and cleaning the tank i still had to replace the filter every 100 miles or so ran great then would slowly loose top speed that was back when vw filters where 10 for $3 so it was cheap and it got better with time but i still carried a pack of filters in it just in case gelled fuel can clog a filter instantly so can mold that some times forms in old gas tanks from organic material colected over the years you could try a boat tank set up as a test i did that on my scout as it was stored out side for years with no gas cap till i cleaned the tank if it works it will give you time to fix the tank and lines and still drive it around it could be as simple as there is rubber partialy blocking something and its not getting the volume it needs at.high speed -

Try replacing the fuel filters and look for bad grounds if there Isent a filter right before the fuel pump put one in it could save the pump if theres any gunk in the tank
