I ran it today i Also think it sounds like a exhaust leak I need to crawl underneath to be sure but considering all I put this motor through and the events leading up to the car stalling out way heavy lugging over lugging just for the fun of it and all the sparkling specks in the oil I'm gonna say I lost a rod bearing and considering I built the motor with what I had laying around just to test out some modding ideas i had and getting 2 years of use out of it I would say it did good now I just have to drop the stock motor back in that runs fine and build me another ea82x to pop only this time I'll make sure to use good parts I might even buy a few parts like lifters and new bearings and I might also revisit the ultra thin copper head gaskets with a few extra tricks this time to keep a good seal maybe a multi layer copper gasket

Rear hatch door release from inside mod?
ferp420 replied to cnc's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I took the cover off and never put it back on I can use one foot to open the latch and the other foot to open the hatch -
There's a sweet hatch listed when I opened that link a 83 hatch for 2500 at a dealership in walnut creek http://m.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=422396390&zip=94018&endYear=1996&pageLayout=list&sortBy=distanceASC&startYear=1981&listingTypes=used&searchRadius=50&mmt=%5BSUB%5BSUBL%5B%5D%5D%5B%5D%5D

6 lug redrill wheel/tire combos
ferp420 replied to crazyhorse001's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've got a loyale with isussu rodeo rims running 195 60 15s with no triming and no rubbing and the wheels don't stick out of the fenders my friend has a gl10 with a 2" leaveling blocks he used adaptors to run 17s on that rig if the adaptors weren't so thick the wheel wouldn't stick out he swaped back to 15s and and it looks a lot better a pic of the gl10 on 17s 1 -
I would say fix the gl and get another car to get closer to your 40mpgs there is no car out there that will do it all ea82s are cheap and last a lot longer when your driving something else

loyale d/r problem, stuck in neutral
ferp420 replied to toyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Im sure your just stuck between gears try shifting the transfer case while its in reverse or try pushing it backwards and see if it shifts if not jack it up so all 4 tires are off the ground and turn the wheels backwards if the transfer case is bound up at all from turning on pavement or running different tire sizes on pavement it will not shift moving the car backwards frees up the gears alowing it to shift I knew a guy who had to drive backwards around the block for a hour before he could get out of low range the most I've ever had to role back was 20 ft mostly just need a foot out the car and a little push to role back but some times I have to go back and forth a few times it depends on how jamed the gears are its probly a good idea to check the linkage over a few times to just to make sure that it moves both leavers all the way I think the front leaver on the trans shits high low and the rear shifts 2wd to 4WD if the linkage is loose and one of the leavers I sent moving all the way it could get stuck in neutral it could be it bound up and the linkage is out of adjustment seeing as you just swaped it in its hard to say what's up with it I would assume it was driving before the swap and you sead it drove after the swap in 2wd so it sounds like it just needs some adjustments -
Ea82 Front Marker Plugs-ins

Most auto parts store sell the sockets to repair the electrical side of it or get one from a junk yard I used the sockets and housing off a Chevy impala and made them fit there great and the oring makes a nice water tight seal -
So my 2.2 swaped 2000 forester lost the pin on its cam and ate itself I was woundering if the 2000 2.5 single over head cams would be any better than the 2000 2.2 cams or if its worth using the 2.5 heads I have a 2.5 with a bad lower end to use for parts if there is any benefit thanks

EA82 thingimeger for the go dohicky
ferp420 replied to machineit's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's why there's a accelerator pump its been a while since ive worked with that carb but if I remember its about the same size opening as the spfi ya the motor will need a lot of work to handle the extra air and fuel no mater what though its gona be a lot of trial and error to get the tune close enuff to be drivable but its doable way easyer to use tryed and true parts but there's no fun in that I find it way more interesting to see and read about way out there crazy stuff i know this Isent that out there but its different -

Try upgrading the ignition system to some kind of cdi system the msd street fire set ups are cheap now i run a procomp.set up my self also very cheap that will help burn the extra fuel and play with the jetting I've found I can solder the jets closed and redrill smaller holes to save time and money -

Thanks for the offer machinesit I would love a set of those spacers but Im not ready yet I'll hit you up when I get my isht together my spacers are 1" thick I planed on testing out 1/2" spacers and I wanted to try 1 1/2" spacers I have no idea what a smaller spacer or a bigger one would do yet i need to do more testing and I want to shave the block a bit more so the hole in my spacers may need to be angled and have some funny stuff done to the bolt holes to get around the narrower block I won't know what's up though till I get another short block set up for testing hopefully life doesn't get in the way

So my ea82 is done the lower end just isent anymore it was a good test it went well now its time to get down to it Im gona have to put my stock motor back in till I can build a new one I'll see if there's anything I can do to the lower end maybe I can improve on my last one and this time I'll pay better attention to what I'm doing and build myself a real screamer

do we have rev limiters that we don't know about?
ferp420 replied to jdgmbi1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A rev limiter Isent needed on a stock ea82 they just can't burn enuff fuel so when the rev limiter dose kick In the motor sputters from the extra unburnt fuel left in the cylinders from the cdi cutting spark on my rig anyway basicly it floods out the cylinders and it takes a few for the motor to clean out causing a big loss in power I think I have mine set at 7500 but even in first gear pinned to the floor say on a hill climb it won't hit the limiter the only time I've ever used a rev limiter as a tool in any roo was when I had the impreza stuck in deep snow I used it all the time in the scout but that's a whole different beast -

From what ive read these motors have over sized rod bearings sized for a 2.0 they also use the same lower end crank bearings rods on the turbo models and they pump them to the off road guys lug the isht out of there's and of all the problems these motors have its rearly the lower end I think my problems are more oil and heat related but all that sead there is no way its not putting more stress on everything I'm thinking my main bearings are shot and I need more air to the radiator as my skid plate / bumper blocks a lot of the air flow at high speed add the winch and its worse I think the motor design can handle the extra torque but I think the motor needs to be in top shape to do so once I get my house together I'll get back to playing with my ea82s but for now little blue and its motor are just gona have to hang out even with all the problems its still free revs faster and has more pull than my friends ea82t I think I'm on the right track -

A little update Ive been having a hard time dialing this set up in mostly because i used what was laying around I realized I mismatched my lifters I have some old style and some newer style in the same head one of the old style lifters is completely collapsed totally stupid mistake on my part but hay it was only a test engine anyway lol I'm having some idle issues also when its hot it also seems to be running warm even with a extra fan but this thing pulls I have so much more low end its crazy I climbed a few hill I thought where gona stall it out but it lugged up them at 1200rpms it just wouldent stall out there where hills I went up before that needed full throttle to just make up this trip I was only using half throttle and could spit rocks/sand at will I spent most of the time around 2000 rpms and the motor was loving it I am afraid the lower end is giving up though so I'm gona start a short block build here some day maybe have the block board out 20 thousanths and get some new pistons if money permits I keep thinking of just ej swaping it and being done with it but I'm not done playing with the ea82s yet even if its not in this rig there good motors for tinkering around with -
