Springs: moog 854 or 856?
ferp420 replied to armedequation's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
your rig will settle alot but still the springs should add 1.5-2"of lift so depending on your lift you might need to do some more work from the looks of it it would be easy enuff to modify your struts just by looking at the pics you posted but i dont realy know dosent matter the big lifts look great on these cars there is alway cutting a coil or 2 but only do that if a your lazy or broken -

just be aware the extra ride hight might play havok on your cv joints you might need more sub frame drop depending on your setup -
Subaru L series ignition coils
ferp420 replied to 3crows's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
just about any coil will work ive used vw coils and international coils aftermarket coils and stock coil they wont hurt anything just make sure the voltage the coil runs off of is the same as the stock one if your not sure put a volt meter on the coil and turn the key on some ran at 8v and have a resistor inline to drop the voltage if i remeber the subaru coil is 12v cause i removed the resistor from the international and ran it 12v when i swaped to diesel i ran the coil in the loyale the stock coil is still the most reliable but most coils out there wont hurt you ignition system but the coil might burn out prematurly if you want a cleaner more powerfull rig pick up a msd ignition the multi spark discharge will insure a complete burn and give you off the showroom floor performance even if the rest of the system is aging -
ive been up in tahoe for the last 5 years helping a freind build a cabin up there open belts are fine just carry extra belts as allways nothing special about that place no more reason you would through a belt there than anywere else no big snow drifts your not gona be driving through 2 ft of snow they have a plow fleet there that kicks snow butt and there so stuck up they close all the back roads so you cant go anyware exscept the rubicon its open all winter cause its a county rd our timing belts arent any different than a serpentine style belt ive had the front of my engine so packed you couldent see between the radiator and the motor to see the belts just sayin
-
get 2 sets of the cheap ones and carry spares the belts are a 5min swap on the side of the road when your rig is set up right just need a 12mm wrench to loosen the alternator and ac belts i dont even touch the adjuster or anything just slide the new belt on and go

91 EA82 wagon howl over 60kmh
ferp420 replied to subieroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
kinda sounds like a through out bearing ive had lots of them go bad on me finding a new one for the ea81 was a task no one had it i had to pull one from a junk yard lol but the ea82 units are still kicking and 3 months ago i replaced that bearing in the 04 lego after going though a big puddle in a rain storm -
my home made copper headgaskets failed i havent tryed the multlayer copper gaskets though im thinking 2 layers of copper ringed around the cylinders and silicone sealent around the water jackets should hold but why headgaskets are cheap and your not gona boost the hay out of a ea82 so there isent a need for a better stronger sealing head gaskets with 2 layers ringed there no compresion increse like a single layer gasket so no performance gains ether
-
im still using my home made multi layer copper gaskets for intake and exhaust manifolds with permatex copper gasket dressing between layers there on there second motor now still holding

Some ideas for the future?
ferp420 replied to ClassySoob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the duel range trans has 2 overdrive gears 4th and 5th i could hit 90 in 4th and still have plenty of rpms left and another gear but then again i am running 30" tires i wouldent even worry about it your gona drop what maybe 500 rpms at most that 500 rpms wont hurt your engine any as long as your running under 4500 rpms your safe these engines like rpms i ran my ea82s between 4000 and 5000 rpms almost all the time the ej2.2 seems happyest at 2500 and 3500 the ej2.5d ran around 4000-5000 also at freeway speeds the flat 4 realy comes to life in the upper rpms 4500-6500 seeing as how you also want a lift just get bigger tires your gona have a hard time getting more than a 2" of lift from your suspention your stuts dont have that much up traval so you would need new struts then theres the camber issue if you max out your struts or add new bigger ones your not gona be able to aline the rig your camber will be way off thats why the body lifts mounting points are offset so much the ea cvs cant take more than 2" of lift and thats still pushing them to there limits and they still dont last very long so any more than a 2" lift will need a sub frame drop longer struts will be very hard to find the only ones i have herd of that are a direct fit is the vw bettle struts but the story is they bend very easy you could go to ej struts but you would have to change the knuckle and make custom cv axles and then unless you custom fab every part your gona be alot wider in the front then your wheels will have different bolt patterns also note that a lift kit combined with spring lift will through off your camber also so the lift kit by itself is your best option other wise you end up with bad camber i have a spring lift and a strut top lift the strut top lift was set up fot the 2" spring lift then the springs saged now the camber is out the other way lol so i recomend just getting a good lift kit or find the napkin lift kit info and make your own the napkin lift is just a hand drawn design doodled on a napkin but the guiness who drew it included all the info needed to build the lift kit the pics have been passed around from tread to thread long before i became a member on here and might be hard to find but it has all the correction info and how to make the parts good luck- 19 replies

ive had many brake lines fail internaly the rubber hose will deteriorate and clog the line when you hit the breaks the fluid will push past the block when you letgo theres no presure pushing the fluid out of the caliper causing the caliper to stick closed every time i had one break stick thats been the problem if theres 2 breaks sticking thats a different issue they usaly clog by a clamp that holds the line to the strut somtimes you can remove that clamp and thr break will work again ive done that on the road before it works for a while and would atleast confirm a bad line

ferp420 replied to Thomas88DL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no i dont it was along time ago it was the small case gm unit they sell them with the mounting holes in different places so just make sure you get one thats close to the original alternators mounting points they come in alot of different aperages i think.they go up to 140a in the small case be carfull though the cheap ones wont last get a good one from a reputable alternator builder or seller -

i have used the small gm high amp altornators they fit with out modification you just need to wire them up cause the plugs dont match you can get them up to 140 amps but honestly with that kinda draw no alternator will live long get a big capacitor like mentioned above to smooth out the power spikes -

i have the progresive tempo springs i dont remeber the part #but i know one is progresive and one isent the progresive springs worked good the initial rid is good when i put the winch on almost as heavy as the engine the springs stiffend right up and suported the front end well to much time with the winch on thefront softend up the springs alot and the progressive coils just went in to coil bind and dont realy do anything anymore i would say if your gona offroad alot go with the stiffer non progresive springs if your doing mostly street driving get the progresive springs and dont cut the springs -
Distributor side timing belt snapped again
ferp420 replied to montermahan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
before i figured out the pully was the issue i got to the point i could put the belt back on with no tools in the middle of the night in the mud in the dark in frezing temps in shorts and a tee shirt in the middle of the desert -

ferp420 replied to montermahan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ditch the belt covers carry extra belts its a 2 or 3 min job with the covers off the only time i ever had a issue throwing the belts was when it was burried in the mud up the cams also theres a pully that has a lip on it the oil pump if i remeber and sometimes that lip goes away and your belt will fall off on a regular baisis if you replace that pully with a new one that has the lip still the belt wont fall off anymore it would only affect the distibutor side as thats the side that has the oil pump those pullies are getting hard to find these days but you might be able to fabricate something -
after driving this thing with the 29" tires alittle smaller than what i had on my loyale and its alittle bit lighter im realy missing the little ea82m with everything being so close in gearing and weight there isent much differance in power if any between the stock ej22v2 and the ea82m i built i think the ea82 might even have more power with the ac on high the only real differance i can see is the ea82m lasted 20k miles and the ej22 has 300k on it and still counting but that little ea82 was so much fun to beat on lol especialy changing timing belts in a foot and a half deep mud pit at midnight when its 30° outside lol
