hey there, yep, may be time to pass the Sube tourch (ie: killer stash of parts and wagon) I have a new vintage Euro-trash project around (http://bmwcs.amishstripper.com) and wife is "tired" of the wagon................ if I don't find a 'deep storage' solution, I will start the process of cleaning the garage. I will know more in the new couple of weeks. I have to 'rescue' the wagon first................. -Shanon 82 GLW wagon. loaded.....

hey brian, dble check tire pressure, incorrect inflation can be a huge thing. check rear sway bar for looseness also, shocks could be wearring out. my bro's and I have learned a bit from last season and tires are a HUGE thing.... sizes, treads, compounds have a profound effect. we gotta hook up soon. will be in tahoe next Saturday boardin.......hint! -shanonsf

Subiesport Mag 'old school' Project
shanonsf replied to ricochet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey All, Having actually done the Ramada Express (Amature GPS event on pro stages/course),2001, well hey, gotta throw my 2 cents in here. Did it an SUV with my wife. My 82 wagon wasn't quite ready for the trip/challenge (2k miles round-trip from SF plus event itself).......my wife's not an iron bottom.....yet. Organisers are good people, Rally America Grp has taken over SCCA rally program, support them! They also know my car from course working at the Gorman rally 2002. Drove two stages (8 &9) to get to my post, great time & people. Here's what I think. For style, classicness and Sube exposure, take an EA81....SKI TEAM example or replica would be great ha ha ha! (MacBrat still got those decals???) things to consider.....altitude & weather, finishing is primary goal. Heater/defroster gotta work, along with all wipers....it was freezing!! Grand Canyon Rim is at 6800 feet. In 2001, a couple of stages had a foot of snow to plow thru in some tight twisty stuff. Dual range 4wd a good thing. Turbo would be better for power at altitude Most of the stages were smooth, wide and fast, Ramada in known as a driver favorite!! I got up to 90mph, a course worker in a WRX broke 110mph.....pro racers will do 120mph+ depending on conditions. If I hadn't gotten into the vintage racing thing with my brothers, my 82 GLW would have a cage and be out there. Now itsa good gravel car/urban assault commuter driven daily. Here's what i built with this event in mind: 82 GLW w/ dual range, freshly painted white w/ WRX like hood scoop, rear disc conversion, Weber carb, bigger exhaust w/ turbo muffler, KYBs all around, long A-style push bar w/ custom skid plate covering entire lwr section of motor push bar (snow plow/skid), roof rack lights (frt & rear), rear seat removed, GL-10 buckets seats. Here's what's on the bench that has yet to go into car- EA81Turbo, full RX drive line (ie:close ratio 5spd with locking ctr dif. with D/R & 3.7 LSD), custom axels, RX rear control arms and sway bar, full set of 14" alloy PUGs. only needs EA82 frt Brakes and ea82 frt wheel bearing housings. I would take extra front CV axles, seems to me the weakest link in these cars this combo was in working car and hauled butt!! (for an ol' Sube) This car/project could be available, I'm currently building up a vintage track car for this season and might need the space. Snow White has been fully foto/receipt documented and is known by a few NorCal board members. We gotta get a vintage Sube out there people!! Don't need to win (you won't), just finish. Vintage sube would be competitive with the classic 2wd cars, they get stuck and have no traction in the slippery stuff...rally smart and steady. -ShanonSF 82 GLW "Snow White" 00 Xterra "Tonka" 71 BMW CS "Elvis" -

hey all, recently had a big plume of white smoke when starting the car a couple of times recently, very embarrasing, and would go away after warming up. smoke comes from under hood and tailpipe- i look under the hood and some grease had been burnning on the CAT, cleaned it up and seem to do the trick. But if that'sd it , how did it get into the tailpipe and puke out the back? I've got a Weber on a EA81 and runs fantastic, has it gone outta tune a bit? is this a cold weather occurance? White plume smells of water.... could it be a clutch cabl adjustment, is the the clutch/cable? any input appreciated. shanonSf 82 GLW 'Snowhite'....manipulated

Ok folks, thanx for the replies. That's what i was afraid of, they just suck, carry a spare. 10-4! Zeno- clutch is good, replaced a couple months ago, even the Hill-holder works! Pretty cool thing in SF! A wrenchfest could work after the holidays. We might have to do a snow run first! ha ha -shanon

hey all- curious if anyone on the board has an idea/knowledge of a 'better' clutch cable for an EA81?? I've just broken my 2nd in as many years, thankfully the tow was less than 2 miles back home....AAA good.... they have all snapped (pot metal) at the housing ferrel/washer stop behind the pedal. it's never the cable......? just ordered a 'pair' from the dealer, obviously need to carry a spare.... -shanonsf 82 GLW "Snow White"..very manipulated

clicking when cornering!??
shanonsf replied to shanonsf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey there, thx for the replies. went thru the various brake & control arm bolts and there good. clicking has deminished but still present under hard cornering. only seems to be the right rear. the axel shaft can slide sideways @ 1" in travel, is the excessive, is the CV blown? -shanonsf 82 GLW "Snow White".....manipulated -
hey all, it's been awhile, 1st time at this "new" board..... anyway, I'm gettin' a ticking (disconcerning) from rear wheels when cornering. (BTW: 82 GLW wagon, 4wd DR, KYBs & rear discs) Sounds almost like the wheel are flexing and clipping calipers or ???!! It has new rear wheel bearrings about a year old now done by a rebutable pro..... gonna take a peak and check some bolts, any suggestions on what/where to look appreciated!! shanonsf 82 GLW "Snow White"...manipulated.....;-)

Also, I understand theat a feul pressure regulator in needed, true?! if so where does this plumb in?? any help appreciated, I'm half finished here and need help!! thx all, ShanonSF 82 GLW

hey there, got the weber 32/36 DGEV on but have fuel plumbing questions. How do ID which line is which? are 'wet' lines feul-in and 'dry' returns? I've reread Cameron's article but am stuck with the plumbing part. Is there a diagram somewhere that IDs these carb/fuel lines, can't find a image anywhere. Anyone got a good pic of an completed install? thx Shanonsf 82 GLW

custom ea81/82 Motor mounts, any interest?
shanonsf replied to shanonsf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ok, there seems to be some interest here, it utilizes the after market STI poly blocks and a possible custom mounting plate to the ea81/82 block. probably have to fetch your own STI poly blocks, and buy these adapter plates. if it works (know in a couple weeks), might consider making a batch .....(or two)....?! no tranny mount plans as of yet......hhmmm feedback definelty welcome! rally on, shanonsf -

hey all, gathering my bits for my first Sube Clutch job (82 GLW 4wd D/R), any tips/advise to share would be appreciated. I did a VW a while ago so kinda familiar. Also, while motor is out, I would like to install ureuthane motor mounts, anyone have a source for these for an older Sube!? Do they exist, or only for newer models like Imps? thx a bunch! Shanonsf

shanonsf replied to shanonsf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thx fellas, the ID = 225mm (9") on turbo's flywheel, i assume that's a ea82T unit? are the 4spd ea81s a 200mm (8") dia , that's what's in her now i expect, stock for 82 GLW? should I just keep her stock until I do the major swap? shanonsf
