Looks like my A/C compressor is toast. It makes a terrible grinding/growling noise when I turn on the A/C. Took the belt off and the clutch spins freely but the main bit turns roughly, like it's catching on spots. Idler pulley doesn't feel great, but spins freely and doesn't feel like it's near seizing. I've read that once a compressor bearing goes bad, all kinds of metal debris can be introduced into the system, thus the need for a flush before the new compressor is installed. Is this really necessary? I don't think I can do the flush myself--looks like you need compressed air and I don't have that. I was hoping to just toss in another compressor and charge it with a can from the store. Is it necessary to replace anything else like the condenser or drier?

wtdash - or anyone else who has done this work around: which is the IAC hose that needs to be T'd into? I plan on using my EJ18 EGR intake on the non-EGR EJ22 that is about to go in. The IACV looks a bit different on the EJ18 and from wtdash's write-up I can't quite tell what to T into:

Yeah I've installed the whole system, but I guess there's always the possibility that I got a bad actuator or switch or something. These were all junkyard parts...So what I'm hearing is that I really should get a computer from a 93-95 impreza with a manual transmission, is that right? It couldn't be from a 95 legacy with a manual transmission? Aren't those both the 5MT?

I have a 95 Impreza L wagon that I have added cruise control to. It's an EJ18/5spd. But I haven't been able to get it to work and I'm not really sure where to start. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the cruise computer is specific to the model and/or trans (manual vs auto). I have tried a couple different computers. With the first one, I would press the cruise button on the dash and the orange light would turn on, but no response when trying to actually set the cruise. I tried another computer, and the orange light wouldn't even turn on. Is it possible I have the wrong computer?

OK great, thanks guys. My car already has stock WRX wheels so I'm good there. and yeah, I'm talking about rear brakes only.

I've searched and can't find a clear answer on this. I want to do a rear disc conversion on my 95 L wagon and one guide I read says that anything up to 2001 will work, whereas I've seen other people using WRX brakes in the back. There's a guy selling everything I need off a 2002 WRX, including the parking brake cables, which is one of my questions. First, will these knuckles bolt up on my car? Second, will the parking brake cables be of appropriate length?

A couple months ago I had trouble getting a vehicle to pass emissions and I used the CRC "guaranteed to pass" stuff that is available at most auto parts stores. I also dumped in a couple bottles of Heet fuel line antifreeze, since I read that works well too. Not sure if all that was overkill, but I definitely passed that time!

No, I ended up finding it in the giant pile of parts sitting in the back seat. -

Just a note for anyone who might come across this situation in the future, the tip about timing was right on the money and I couldn't have gotten it running without Gloyale's advice. I had a no start for three days. I had spark and fuel so I was sure it was timing and I redid the timing belts to no avail. Then I remembered this advice and tried putting the distributor in at about 20 degrees after TDC. Had to redo it a couple times to get it right on but now it runs great. With timing set at 0 TDC I could not even get a sputter. -

I ended up figuring it out. It is the solenoid valve that hooks up to the throttle body and EGR valve. -
