1998 Subaru Legacy with ej22 I was changing my timing belt and front seals on 1998 Legacy with ej22 . When I took the crank pulley off I noticed that the key way in crank crankshaft was sheared off even with the crank sprocket. It must have put some torque on the crank sprocket because the crank sprocket doesn't want to come off. Should I try s to force the crank sprocket off, try to drill out the key way, or just put it back together torque crank bolt back to 170 ft pounds and keep driving it. The crank seal is not leaking.

I found a disconnected wire on the 02 sensor. Repaired it. Went out for another drive cycle and all I/m codes cleared. The 02 sensor had a good sine wave on my scan tool all along. However that one loose wire on my 02 sensor set a cel code so the ecu would never complete the I/m checklist. Who knew. I glad the you guys on this board did.

Thank for that comprehensive write up on the I/M system. I've got these I/M codes in the following order on my Actron Auto Scanner Plus. Catalyst Monitor inc., Evap System Monitor inc, 02 Sensor Monitor inc. EGR/VVT System Monitor inc. The I/M code for Oxygen Sensor HTR is ok. However that sets off a P0135 CEL for Oxygen Sensor Heater. So if I clear that code the I/M code for Oxygen Sensor Heater will go back to ok, until the P0135 turns back on. Of course that turns on the I/M code for Oxygen Sensor Heater back to inc. Does the P0135 CEL for Oxygen Sensor Heater bank 1 sensor 1 have to be repaired with a new Oxygen Sensor before the rest of checklist will run, or will the checklist continue to the next I/M monitor?

I have a 99 Legacy Outback with manual trans. that has a ej22 with EGR engine swapped in it from an ej25 dohc engine. Four out the eight I/M codes are reading incomplete. They are catalyst monitor, evap system maintenance, 02 system monitor, and egr/vvt monitor. Car also has one cel for 02sensor heater bank 1 sensor 1. I have driven the car for two 15 mile drive cycles. Is having an ej22 with EGR in a Legacy Outback manual trans car possibly causing the four I/M codes. I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting.

Okay were finally getting somewhere. Do I just need to put on a 03 ej251 drivers side cam sprocket, or do I need to put on a 03 ej251 drivers side cam sprocket and a 03 ej251 crank sprocket, or do I need to put on both 03 ej251cam sprockets and the 03 ej251 crank sprocket. Why do I need to change any sprockets on the 01ej22 in the first place. My only experience with swaps is 96 to 99 Outbacks. There is no cam/crank swapping involved. You pull out the ej25 dohc and put in the ej22 sohc. The only thing I've had to change is, adding or removing the egr depending whether the car getting the ej22 was automatic or manual transmission. My lack of understanding is, what's the purpose of pulling off the 01 ej22 cam and crank sprockets and putting on 03 ej251 cam and crank sprockets. I do know about Car-Parts I've bought many parts from the wrecking yards on their website.

Thanks for your help. I'm over my skill level on this project. That's sounds like the way to go so far as getting an 03 ej251 intake manifold/harness if the current one doesn't hook into the 03 Legacy harness. However I don't understand what is meant by swapping the drivers side cam and crank sprocket. I know there is a sprocket on the crank shaft behind the crank pulley and I know where the cam sprockets on each cam shaft. What am I supposed to swap. I have no parts from the ej251 engine to swap onto the ej22.?

Got engine from private party in Seattle. I've been involved with quite a few ej25 dohc to ej22 sohc swaps in 96 to 99 legacy wagons. I bought this car with its partial dismantled original 2.5sohc engine. Basically the guy I was working with took that engine as a core along with $800 from me, to get another 2.5 sohc engine and then disappeared. It does look like the grey and brown wiring harness female plugs on the ej22(top pic) fit the grey and brown wiring harness male plugs on the 2003 Legacy (bottom pic). However the wiring harness on the 03 Legacy has three other plug coming out of that harness. I'm assuming they are for the crank, cam and knock sensor. What's my best strategy to get the 01 ej22 into the 03Legacy sedan. I know I need a flywheel. The 01 ej22 was an automatic trans car and the 03 Legacy is a manual trans car. Do I need to find an 03 ej25 intakemanifold/ harness and an 03 drivers side cam sprocket and cranks sprockets to make the 01ej22 this swap?

I don't have any parts from the 03 3j251 engine . I have the 01 ej22 engine in the top pic that's going into the 03 Legacy in the bottom pic . The bottom pic is looking under the hood at my 03 Legacy sedan that the ej251 was removed from before I got the car. The 03 Legacy is a manual trans car and the 01 ej22 cam out of a Impreza with automatic trans.

I have a 2003 Legacy sedan that had a ej251. The engine was removed when I got the car. I bought a 2001 ej22 out of an Impreza to install in the 03 Legacy. It looks like the intake manifold wiring harness on the ej22 is different than the harness on the car that the manifold wiring harness plugs into. What intake manifold/wiring harness do I need to get for the ej22 that will bolt onto the engine and fit the cars wiring harness.

Does anyone know if the intake manifold wiring harness for manual trans. and automatic trans, cars are the same for 1996 thru 1998 2.2 and 2.5 engines. Need to know for two projects I have. They are a 1998 and a 1999 Outback 2.2 sohc into 2.5 dohc car engine swaps. The person who was helping me on several previous successful swaps of 2.2 to 2.5 cars has gone "missing". To further confuse the situation I still have two of the Legacies with manual trans. Both cars have a 2.2 with egr. in them. One car has egr in tack and the other one has egr pipe cut and sealed shut and it looks like the egr port in drivers side head has been plugged. So basically I'm finishing up someone else's work. I also have a lot of 2.5 dohc manifolds and wiring harnesses left over from the successful swaps done over the last two years.

I'm swapping in a 96 ej22 Legacy engine from manual trans car into a 1998 Outback with an ej25 engine with an automatic trans car. I know I need a intake manifold from an automatic, because the intake I have now doesn't have an egr valve and the intake manifold wiring harness has a different configuration. I have a 96 ej22 manifold from automatic trans car with egr coming from a wrecking yard. Do I use the intake manifold wiring harness from the ej22 automatic with egr or do use the intake manifold wiring harness from the ej25 engine with automatic that I'm swapping out.
