Went into the Subaru dealer and got my right camshaft gear verified as belonging on a 05 Impreza .They didn't have a left cam gear in stock, so I couldn't verify that one.against mine. I had previously tried two different right camshaft gears and both seemed to make the tbelt too tight.. My two left cam gears seem to be identical. I will try installing the tbelt again tomorrow.

Have ej25 block, crank sprocket and cam sprockets from 2005 Impreza. with ej25 heads from a 2005 Legacy. The Impreza timing belt is too tight to install. Subaru calls for a 13028aa231 tbelt for a 05 Impreza and a 13025aa21b for a 05 Legacy. Since Im using the 05 Impreza block, crank and cam sprockets it seems like the tbelt from a 05 Impreza would work. There must be the some difference between the 2005 Legacy and Impreza heads, crank or cam sprockets. Anyone know what that difference is? Just ordered the 05 Legacy tbelt.

Thanks GD. What would you recommend for this set of heads. Bring them in and have them disassembled cleaned and milled or finish doing the heads myself? I'm still a little confused on what I need to clean on the heads if I finish the job myself. I've used the same machine shop for yeas and never asked if they are taking the cams out before resurfacing them. I will be verifying their procedure on Monday.

That is sound advise. I'm using non mls Subaru oem head gaskets. SSI commented that my bigger issue was debris falling into the oil passages leading to the cams. I thought hot water, dawn and good rinse in utility sink would get rid or all the debris. However I've never tried this method before.Yes, my method seemed a little sketchy, that's why I posted the topic.

Thanks for the good advice. Think I will take the cams out and check the bearings and the oil passages on this set of heads. I'm pretty sure my machine shop doesn't pull the cams and valves out unless they are pressure testing the heads, although I never ask them. I seem to always end up with a mess of ultra grey when reinstalling the cam plates. I've only used ulta grey in the in the 13 oz tube. Any advise on a better method of reinstalling the cam plates would be greatly appreciated.

Doing head gaskets on 2005 ej25. One of heads had a migrated exhaust valve guide.Using a different set of known good heads.Cleaned the head surface with 220 then 400 grit sandpaper on long sanding block. Washed and rinsed the heads in utility sink and dried with compressed air. Is that a valid head cleaning method? Also wanted to know how the oil flows from the oil pick up tube, thru the oil pump, block and heads then back into the oil pan.

Doing head gaskets on 08 Impreza..There are two different sets of installation instructions. The instructions I'm used to are middle two head bolts to 25 ft/lbs, outer four head bolts to 15 ft/lbs ,along with a couple of additional angle torques.. The other set of instructions are all six head bolts to 31 ft/lbs, along with a couple of slightly different angle torques. Which installation instruction set should be used for 08 Impreza ? Also I've seen YouTube videos where the 21 ft/lbs then 51 ft/lbs torque and then two 180 degree loosening steps are omitted. The rational is these steps are for head bolts stretching, and if you are reusing the head bolts ,they are already stretched. Which method is correct, re stretch the head bolts or not re stretch the head bolts ?

Last fall bought 2003 ej253 that came from Copart car..The donor car was hit in front.. Engine damage is broken drivers side timing belt cover.Timing belt is still on with all timing marks in correct position. Just did a leak down test on engine.Getting 80 percent leak down on all four cylinders at exhaust ports. No piston ring leaks and all four spark plugs have an even ware pattern with no oil fouling. I want to get correct diagnosis. without pulling the heads, because I'm selling the engine. Doing complete rotation of engine from crank bolt, I'm getting 80 percent leakage thru exhaust ports on all cylinders. So I will do valve lash adjustment on all intakes and exhaust and redo test..
